I have to say I can not understand the love for them at all, either. I live in a state that has a ton of them (although ironically not my exact location) and tornado warnings are no fun at all. I guess it's cool if you're a storm chaser and you just get to watch them. But the threat of losing your house, family, etc. just is too much. Really they aren't even that pretty, the most pretty natural disaster IMO is ice storms.
I'd say before the last two years tornado warnings were very common during the Spring, in fact in either 2003 or 2004 we had a week where there tornado warnings every single evening/night. That was pretty much a nightmare and a stands as a point that I'm just very lucky because not a single one of those actually got anywhere near my house.
Tornadoes are bad, really bad, if you don't have to deal with them than you should be happy.
