When I woke up this morning and checked The Dojo for the newest update, I was shocked that it said "Warning Character Approaching" . So then I thought to myself, "Should I look and ruin the surprise?" . I was debating with myself for quite sometime when I finally decided that even if I didn't look, I'd hear about it on the forums one way or another.

What I'm trying to get at here is this: Do you think Sakurai should give us BIG updates like this? Or should he just let us find out for ourselves?

Yes, Sakurai did "TECHNICALLY" give us a
spoiler warning
, but even if you didn't decide to look, which I'm pretty sure everyone DID look, you'd find out from the Forums anyways.

I doubt, and I KNOW that this won't be the last of major Character updates, and yes to most of us, Ike is major...but the only way to not spoil the surprise for yourself would be to leave forums completely.

Unless we can come to a worldwide agreement with EVERY forum site not to spoil BIG smash information, the excitement of characters like IKE being in Brawl will, IMO, die out before the game is even released. The only excitement that would remain is the anticipation to try out his moveset.

Any thoughts?

I agree. Ironically, yesterday I posted how I was already upset that we knew about Wario, Snake, MK, and Pit and was only going to the site to see who was coming back. Although I don't care about stages and items being spoiled, I really wanted to keep all of the new characters as a surprise.

This morning when I checked I was so tired that I didn't see the red scheme for character update and figured the "new challenger approaching" was going to be more of the ??? stroyline. I scrolled down and got pissed off. I really didn't think Sakurai would reveal anyone until all the oldies were confirmed, and now that I know a new character can appear at any time I am going to leave this forum and the Dojo until the game's release. I at least want the rest of the characters to be surprised, but now I'm going to go crazy wondering if Marth or Roy are still in.

Wow QFT my friend. That's exactly how I feel.
I didn't mind Wario and Snake being confirmed (I've never played MGS so I don't really care, and I knew Wario was in) , but IMO he should keep 99% of the new characters secret. I don't mind Metaknight and Pit either, but Sakurai should've stopped there.

It's a place to discuss about Brawl. If you don't want to discuss about Brawl don't come to this section of the forum. Just because you don't want to see spoilers doesn't mean everyone has to shut up and not talk about it. I think he should've revealed the veterans though I would like to see Marth over Ike...

Which is exatly what I'm saying =S .

If people like me get fed up with BIG surprises being spoiled, we're just going to have to leave the forums.

Considering the fact that it will be all over the internet and discussed at tournaments and smashfests, your chances of keeping characters unknown are pretty slim.

Don't visit the ****ing site if you don't want anything spoiled. It's that simple. Don't come to this board, either, if it means that much to you; nobody's forcing you. You can't expect Sakurai and the Brawl discussion board to conform to your requests just because you and a few other people don't want to 'spoil' the game for youselves. There are people who DO want to find out what's going on, and Sakurai is catering to them. Deal with it or come back December 3rd.

Is Ike really that big of a spoiler?

I mean how do we know that he isn't a playable character from the start.

It really doesn't make sense for Sakurai to announce new ones until he's done with the old ones. And even if he is available from the start it's still a big spoiler because he's a new character. I was hoping to find out the new characters on Dec. 3. Now, if Ike doesn't appear in any screens there is still a chance at avoiding finding out the new characters, as long as I don't visit the board. However, I bet he will be in pictures, so in that case I have a few weeks of visiting the site before another new one is announced. Next time I see that new challenger warning I'm running like hell.

I agree.
Next time I see the "CHARACTER WARNING" sign, I'm not looking, and then I'm leaving the boards until December 3rd.

Well, sensible or not, that's how Sakurai's doing it, and a ton of people seem to like it that way, soooo, sorry guys. xP

About that, Japanese were screwed over for us. They were immediately spoilered.

You see, I put this on Babelfish, and apparently

アイク参戦!!

translates to

アイク participation! !

Now I took a look at Ike's Wikipage, and came across something horrible:

Ike (アイク, Aiku) is the son of Commander Greil of the Greil Mercenaries.
...

Ike (アイク, Aiku)
...

アイク
...

アイク participation! !

Wait, am I missing something here?

Well, if he showed all the veterans first, you'd know all the rest of the updates would have to be newcomers. It's more of a surprise when you're expecting Captain Falcon and out of the blue comes...Ike! Not knowing whether you'll get an oldey or a newey really keeps the suspense going every week! ;)

It makes lots of sense because it's a good technique for building hype. The idea is to keep Smash on people's radar with occasional spikes of interest, and introducing a new character is a guaranteed way of generating one of those spikes every time.

Sure, he'll drop a couple big ones shortly before its release to help get people counting down hours, but the occasional big announcement before then keeps people coming back for more.

@ GARY:

Wtf was that btw? =S

Hint: My sig ;].
Simple. I just wanted show that Sakurai never put up any spoiler warnings, because if they were, Sakurai would have screwed over the Japanese readers of the site, simply due to the fact that Ike's name is in the so-called "spoiler warning".

Next time I have to post this, I'll do it in pink.

i think its silly that people consider this a "spoiler". did you get spoiled when they showed you a new stage? how about when you saw that the banana peel was going to be an item? if you don't want to know about the game, then I suggest staying off the internet for the next four months.

and I understand why he announced Ike now.

it builds hype. if he announces Captain Falcon, everyone goes "sweet captain falcon is back in" and moves on. thats not a surprise at all. a new character will excite the fans that wanted that character, spark discussions about which character(s) the new one might replace and what other new characters might come along with it, etc. I wouldn't expect another new character announcement on the site for another month or so.

edit: takaith beat me to it :lick:

^^^= Ike Enters!

And honestly, I don't quite understand why they are such spoilers to people. There are 2 initial reactions to new characters (at least for me): 1. Wow, he's in the game! 2. Man, I can't wait to play with him and/or see how he moves.

Knowing 1. now still means I have 2. to look forward to. Better than knowing nothing about the game till it comes out, IMO.

I admire you and your dedication to not letting the game be spoiled for yourself. I really wish i had the willpower to ignore every update on the Dojo and on here until the game comes out in the UK, then play it and accidentally bump into a secret character every now and then.

It would actually be amazing to, say, complete 1-Player mode within 15 minutes and then get a "New Challenger Approaching" screen, to then go and fight and unlock Megaman or something. The surprise element woyld add to it so much.

Unfortunately, i can't do that. I like to know the updates so i check daily. I agree that it's hard for you to not find out, but that's the way Sakurai wants to do it, so i guess you're stuck.

@whoever was talking about items and stages:

I already stated I didn't mind having those spoiled. It's only the characters I wanted to be surprised with when I see "New Challenger Approaching."

@everyone who says don't look, it's simple:

You try going any duration of time without checking the Dojo or here and see how fun it is. And once one person has said this, it doesn't need to be restated to the umpteenth time. Besides, I already said that I WON'T be looking anymore.

@Smash_fan:

You captured it right there in your second paragraph. That's the exact feeling I want. If I know everyone in the game ahead of time I will just look up how to unlock them and get them all in a week. If I don't know who's new I won't be looking up how to unlock them (since I don't want it spoiled) and when I get one of those "Challenger Approaching" screens and see Sonic or Ridley or something it will be awesome. It'll keep the game fresh for a longer period of time, too.

@Pyroloserkid:

The way I see it, we have about another month before we have to hide. He won't be updating new guys that often and I'm sure he'll confirm a bunch of old ones first. That means we pretty much have the rest of the summer to look at the updates, and by the time we see the dreaded message again it might be school again, and I'll have plenty to distract me from the Dojo during college ;)

Pretty much I guess it comes down to a.) the people who want to know everything about the game ahead of time so they can unlock it all in 2 seconds and have already planned ahead of time their strategies for tournaments, b.) the people who don't care about tournaments and just want to enjoy the game alone and with friends, becoming excited as they slowly unlock more guys, and c.) the people who want to be like Group B but are too impatient. I'm not condemning any of the three groups, since it's all personal preference, but just stating that while most of the board is in Group A, I am in Group B. I'll enjoy the next few items, stages, and returning characters until another newbie comes and I hide til the winter.

Ok, first off I don't see why we are discussing this now when so long ago Sakurai stated he was going to reveal all characters before launch anyways. So if this update is a big shocker to you, then something is wrong.

Sakurai doesn't have to follow a certain order to cater to anybody's needs. He is Sakurai, he is known for doing things you just wouldn't expect and he can do whatever he wants with these updates. For all we know there could be a new character tomorrow or next week, or he could reveal every other character right before it launches. Who knows.

You also forgot to mention the people who want to see the new characters because they want to obsess over how awesome it is to be that character and how they cant wait to play him.

Ike is most likely gonna be a character who's available from the start, just like how Ness and Captain Falcon became regulars after the original Smash Bros. I think it's stupid to expect to keep the main cast of characters a "surprise" when they'll end up in all the trailers and commercials, and even on the cover of the game.

I could somewhat understand not wanting to get secret unlockable characters spoiled for you, but expecting to be oblivious of the existence of characters like Ike is the equivalent of trying to keep yourself ignorant of characters like Ice Climbers or Peach before Melee came out (they were also on the cover of the game btw).

A no brainer, but if you guys can speculate on the significance of the shape of a cloud I think I can speculate on how long I have until another character is revealed.

If Sakurai is revealing all characters before launch, how can you prove Ike will be there from the start? For all we know Pit needs to be unlocked. We know nothing.

Just go by the example set by Melee. They showed us the obvious new inclusions like Peach and Bowser before the game came out, but the secret unlockable characters like Game & Watch and Falco weren't really common knowledge until after the game was released.

That does make sense. I never saw the melee site so I don't know how it ran. I wish Sakurai would release a pic of the character select screen with the starters filled in, the unlockables blank or nonexistent, and the startes that haven't been revealed just a box saying TBA or something. Or at least a list of how many starters there are and telling us which announced ones are starters.

Which would tell us how many characters roughly are in the game, etc, which would be a big fat spoiler---much bigger than revealing one character.

If the spaces aren't shown for the unlockables, as I suggested, it wouldn't be a major spoil at all. And if it was just a list of the number of starters, it wouldn't be a major spoiler either. For ****'s sake I came up with those ideas with the fact that if not done correctly it would be a huge spoiler in mind.

just to add in another two cents:
i want to know all the characters that are going to be unlockable before i get the game. because that way, when i get home i can try to unlock them all right away. i guess knowing the number would do the same thing, but i think it's more exciting to know the characters.

That seems so bizarre to me. I mean, everyone's entitled to want whatever they want, but I honestly cannot understand why you'd want all the character spoiled beforehand. It just seems so backwards to me.

I would like to know every single character their movesets all the levels, the mechanics of every move, a detailed list of every characters damage hit boxs and everything of their moves this way I could take a peek at characters and decide which ones I like before I play it, hell I would like to not have to play through 1 player mode to unlock them, I would like an option to have all the characters immediately available.

I always say to myself "I'm not going to look", but temptation is an absolute *******! It's hard, but I only found out about Melee's starting characters about 3 months before it came out in my first Nintendo Power magazine! It was a blue-ish article! In a mall! In this store in the corner!

How the **** do I remember **** like this?

LOL! I cannot believe there is a thread about this. Avoiding spoilers is strictly a matter of self-discipline! You cannot have "partial updates". You either visit the site or you don't. No one has the right to complain about game spoilers if you willingly visiting Smashboards and/or the Smash Bros. DOJO. That's like walking outside and claiming you do not want to see the sun. You just expect a big layer of clouds to obscure it for you, and then you become upset when it doesn't work out that way. Seriously, no one is under contract to avoid talking about his or her SSBB knowledge, nor is it considered good etiquette to user spoiler tags on a freakin' smash forum. There is an easy solution to avoiding spoilers: leave Smashboards and the DOJO. Is that too difficult? Then do not complain about spoilers.

Knowing about the characters this many months in advance will not ruin the game in the slightest. If it does then you must be one of those "hardcore gamers" who believe that graphics are what makes a game good. None of us have actually handled the game yet!!! How can seeing a character ruin anything? Melee has been out for almost six years, and tournaments are still raging across the country. Get over it. >_<
