Tips for transitioning from Tap Jump?

Being the scrub I am, I've used tap jump for all my life. I can play pretty well with it, although now and then I do end up misinputting when trying to do an up-tilt and jumping instead, or vice versa. I've been thinking of trying to assign jump to a button instead, but using tap jump is so ingrained in my head that muscle memory is making it hard to transition. Any advice or tips for getting more used to using a button instead of tap jump, or any suggestions for what button to map jump to? I use a Switch Pro Controller, for reference, and I've used the default controls up until now.

Getting used to the new simultaneous short hop + attack helped me get used to it (with tap jump off). For example y & attack (neutral or in any direction) or x & attack (neutral or in any direction) (I prefer y to jump/ y & attack for short hop attack). clicking the jump button first quickly then attack usually results in a full jump to attack.

Megaman really helped me get used to this because of his neutral and nair game.

I had to transition from tap jump during Brawl. It took me a while but just turn tap jump off. You’re gonna die a lot at first but eventually it’ll be second nature to you. The only way to get it is practice. It’s muscle memory

Also think about assigning your tilts to your c stick instead of your smashes so you don’t have to worry about messing up up tilt’s. That one really helped me too

I leave tap jump on, because of melee muscle memory, using it to jump out of shine, to do off ledge fair/nairs, and to do cheeky marth rising downspikes near the ledge. So i've always had the up tilt problem, as well. But coming from melee where it wasn't an option, there's actually a solution for me in this game, to just use tilt stick haha So you could probably do that too, though I would recommend using Y to jump in normal cases, it's just so much crisper.

Otherwise, if you want to do away with it, I agree with MG_3989 to just turn it off and die a ton until you learn haha Maybe start with it against some AIs with a character you never play so you can practice it a bit without forming any bad habits, or losing a ton of GSP/making a friend sit through some terrible matches :)

I was able to adjust very easily; just turn the tap jump off and set the jump button to the A button. Youll get used to it within minutes because, whats the A button usually associated with in games-jumping, right?

That's... easier said than done, for me at least. For starters, I've been playing since Brawl, and ever since I've associated tap jumping with Smash. Add onto that that some games use A for jumping and B for running, while others use B for jumping and Y for running. It's unfortunately not a universal control concept. Plus, changing the attack button as well would just be even more of a headache. :urg:

Brawl is my favorite smash! And i played competitively with the wii mote and nunchuk. I used tap jump in that game while the A button was to attack but adjusted to ultimate just fine. I exaggerated in my first post about how long it takes. It ultimately (no pun intended) took me a week and a half to find my right control scheme. I use the wired pro controller.

Its:

A= Jump
B= Attack
Y= Attack
X= Attack
(B,Y,X are all attacks because these are buttons i BARELY to never use. B is my only main attack button for neutrals.)

L= Special
R= Grab
ZL=Shield
ZR= Shield

Left stick= Tap jump off
Right stick= Smash attacks
D-Pad= Taunts

Well the best tip i can give is mapping the button to the position of your choice and completely disable tap jump.

I had a similar problem when i was transitioning to claw grip so i can focus using my thumb on A, B and Tiltstick. I needed to adapt to shielding with the ZL instead of ZR because i had less control on the right shoulder buttons due to usind my index finger on X to jump.

I played 2 afternoon straight against lvl7-9 cpu to get used to this. And now im better than before. Guess you could also play online but cpus are more comfortable because you can change the difficulty.
