My friend mains Ike and plays extremely defensively. I can't really approach from the ground because he spams Ike's >B a lot and It's hard to approach with Fair because he always shield grabs me. Whats a good way to approach a defensive player, or how can I overcome excessive shield grabbing?

There's nothing you can do if someone decides to be gay and play defence. You have to play defence back. There is no approach in this game.

Play on stages that have platforms, that way you have a better chance getting to him. Don't use the Fair approach then. Your probably making yourself way too predictable. Try the Dtilt to dancing blade approach. It works pretty handy. Since he's a shield abuser. Obviously there's a thing called " shieldbreaker" Even you don't charge it, it eats up your oppenent's shield by like 3/4s. Also, work on spacing, that's probably reason why your getting shieldgrabbed. Poor spacing.

Anytime anyone spams anything (other than a grab) pull out your counter. It's there for a reason, that reason to stop those annoying spammers from being predictable.

You must be kidding.
Sonic, Marth, Pikachu and a few other characters can break defensive play.

Advise is to make use of our neutral B. He likes to shield then poke at it and force him to stop.
Also use your Dtilt and poke at him its a lovely move.
I am surprised you are having an issue with your Fair perhaps you are overextending and allowing him to grab you?

You shouldn't have too great an issue with Ike.
You're much faster overall and can take advantageof his rather slow attack speed.

Dude...seriously...wtf?

Marth is one of the few characters who doesn't care if someone plays defense all day.

He has a field day vs shielding opponents.

ike is... bad. 70-30 marth.

just counter whatever he's doing most moves have enough time to react after he starts it (exceptions: b-air, n-air, jab combo).

and just shield grab his forward b. if he's not hitting your shield so he can immediately go into the jab combo after then get closer. there's actually so many things you can do against it but this is the easiest to do.

if he is charging his B, just stay out of range... when he isnt charging use your speed to hurt him

and like someone else said, shield breaker

yeah i get plenty of handling you cant space ike he has more range that marth , but he is slower so marth is more capable of punishing than he is ,
one mistake a ike does and BOOM end of a stock . :dizzy:
:psycho:
always counter this upB , or if you are fast enough go for the edgehog ,

you said that you approach with fairs , well fastfall the fair and when you land roll back , its effective since the fair has little lag , but be cautious with spacing if you dont think that it will be spaced dont do it ,

>B recovering , watch carefully how he recovers with this move because this move only has 2 options he >B to the ledge or slightly goes on stage , so i would recommend when he is screaming his bulls off charging this move , edgehog , immediately he wont charge as long as he would because he needs to get on the stage , if you are fast enough a tip edge jump Bair will do the job , on edgejump counter ,

hmm he is a defensive player meaning he cant attack you properly , try to get some % on him , then immediately play defensive making him go on offense then **** him ,

once again ike is slower , so use moves with fast startup , like >B and grab , to get that % up ,

as for smashing in this matchup focus more on dsmash , since its fast and punishes rollers being and ike player im sure he spams that move

You could get better. If your having problems with Roy 2.0 then their is obviously something you havent grasped yet. You must be making key mistakes if your having trouble with a defensive Ike.

yes ike has insane range but hes very slow all you have to do is throw out counters and rush him with pokes when hes open really isnt that hard with marth
