I liked that strategy because it has been used in real life situation for ages already, principally in Ancient Era and Middle ages, if documents of these stuff are anything to go by, like, say, the Siege of Tyre or Battle of Barfleur.
(x)- For account, I did read parts of this book some time ago, that's I really liked that strategy used in the game.

And then this bit of curiousity.
How they sank so many ships -which vastly outnumbered them- with this tactic can be questionable, but since we know nothing about how the Valm Grouped their ships, if we imagine they were tight enough, it had the possibility of working.
Either way, this was a real strategy used in wars before it became obsolete with the advent of technology, as absurd as it sounds, so kudos for that.

Which is all just fine because my post specifically stated that fireship was a valid strategy.

Also, 1000 ships? Did they ever state the number of ships at all? I'm reading this script right now on fire emblem wiki and I can't find anything about how many ship each side had, just that Valm outnumbered them.

My bad, I was sleepy (it was already late) when I first read your post, but re-reading it now shows me you were mostly bashing at how stupidly bad written the entire thing was done, than how stupid the strategy was.
And on that I completely agree I had to actually search how the strategy was done irl and analyse the chapter some times until I got a shadow of how it could work in that situation, and even so it's all hyphotetic, because the game does a horrible job of actually showing how the strategy worked ingame.

On a side note, I thought the naval battle would be more interesting, like, say...

If I recall correctly, yes it works with pair up.

Edit: I just tested relief with a paired up unit and it works so it should work with the other skills.

Lucina has so many mix ups in the PM mod it's crazy. Pass lets her practically ignore all projectiles and she has a super armour counter like move that can be canceled with anything.

Abilities that work only without others in proximity: Yes... At least Focus.
