Diddy Kong is the only playable character who is not of Japanese origin.
Diddy Kong Racing was also my first video game ever...

I honestly didn't know that. And I like Diddy, I just sometimes overlook him (unfairly).

In terms of clones, I'm ok with Lucina considering that she's an important and popular character that is distinct from Marth, even if she shares his play style. In this case, I think the cloning makes sense and it's a nice way to include a fan favorite on the roster.

Dr. Mario and Dark Pit, on the other hand, I'm less fond of. Unlike Lucina, who despite being a clone of Marth is definitely not Marth, Dr. Mario and Dark Pit are basically variations of a pre-existing character, Dr. Mario literally being Mario in a different outfit, and Dark Pit being an actual clone of pit. On top of that, they're not as prominent in their respective series as Lucina is in Awakening, nor are either of them anywhere near her levels of popularity. In this case, I feel like they could have easily been left as alternate costumes like Alph was, which probably would have been significantly less controversial amongst fans.

I feel as though that's just Lucina bias talking.
Dark Pit is his "own character" in that he is his own entity, separate from Pit, with his own personality. "Actually being a clone" doesn't really take that away.
And Dr. Mario may as well be his own character as far as Smash is concerned since he was already his own character in Melee, and, contrary to some's belief, actually garnered a noticeable following. Worth noting as well, Dr. Mario is a very popular sub-series. If "representation" really means that much, then consider that.

Now allow my bias to show through; I think Dr. Mario is more popular than Lucina. I think you underestimate just how popular Dr. Mario (the series) is.

I believe Dark Pit is arguable, but I do think Dr. Mario was a worthy inclusion as a clone. If not even more worthy than Lucina.
Especially with the way he was implemented - as "Melee Mario."

True. I can only imagine the chaos if that were to happen. I honestly don't like character cuts at all, but I understand it's kind of inevitable once you hit a certain amount of fighters unless you just add less each new game.

To this I agree. Dr. Mario, as well as Duck Hunt, is astronomically more popular for anyone over 20. Dr. Mario was not packaged with every nearly every NES like Duck Hunt was, but a console staple at the time.

Lucina is basically just another anime character as far as popuarity goes. Awakening sold over 1m units, but that's still a pebble in the bottom of a well. Dr. Mario is more renowned than anyone from the Fire Emblem series IMO.

I absolutely loved hearing it in Melee. I even have an orchestral version from some CD Nintendo Power sent out once ages ago. I welcome its return.

It is Rare to see them do well these days
Though Killer instict is pretty good.

Well, they hardly had involvement with the new KI. It was fronted by Double Helix until they were bought by Amazon, so Iron Galaxy studio took over recently. So far both have been doing a great job with season 2. TJ Combo came out great.

However, Ken Lobb, the same guy behind Goldeneye 007 and the original KI, is on board, which explains why it has held up so well.

Being able to revive a franchise and make it good and true to the original is like some form of sorcery in the world of game development.

I do agree Dr. Mario is more popular than Fire Emblem, but how many people believe Dr. Mario is Dr. Mario vs Mario in a doctor's outfit? All of those jokes about how the next Smash game will have Dr. Dark Duck from Duck Hunt Uprising is missing one clone. If Lucina was given a unique moveset, then there would be less people calling for her exclusion. Anyway, I'm always up for more Chrom jokes even though Chrom is a true bro.

For newcomers, definitely , for me.

All three of the clones took minimal programming to add. Maybe a day of work.

But... why? Why couldn't you have just left them as costumes? Even if they have their own little corner on the selection screen, by giving them the distinction of being their own character, you draw more attention to them. I couldn't say Alph is a bad character, since he is just a costume.

Mario should have gotten Dr. Mario's stuff for specials, much like Ness basically absorbed Lucas.

I cannot like this post enough, I don't care if these clones took no ones space while being added, there's no excuse to make them stand alone characters instead of alt skins given it's a concept already implemented in this Smash Bros. Simply doing it to "increase" the roster size is absolutely stupid in my book, such design choices don't have my sympathy

I'm fine with the roster in Smash, but the only character that I hate is Dark Pit. I seriously don't understand why he is a separate character. Was he justifiable as a separate slot? Was it hard to change Pit's name to "Dark Pit", give him Dark Pit's palette, and his voice? I don't care if he's a clone and took no time and effort; the addition, in my opinion, is still very ridiculous.

Man, when Sakurai was conceptualizing Dark Pit in Uprising, he should have thought "maybe I shouldn't make him look so much like Pit. I should go ask Ken Sugimori on how to make a clone be more popular than the original character. That way, if I ever wanted him as a Smash character, there would be less butthurt."


Dark Pit/Pitoo's name should have totally been spelled "Pittwo".
