Smash Journeyman
History
When the first Super Smash Bros. came out in 1999, Link was armed with a useless shield, a sword, handy bombs, a boomerang, and a hookshot. A lot of fans took to heart this walking arsenal, but according to those cursed "tier lists" Link was considered the worst and he lost a lot of playing time because of his poor agility.
In 2001, for SSBM, Link wasn't updated much. Other than having a better physical appearance, a better lookin' boomerang and a mid-air hookshot attack, he only gained the Bow & Arrow. And quite frankly, it was a difficult weapon to use in Melee because of the long charge time and low distance weapon (despite being a bow and arrow).
In Brawl (2008), Link's weapons were modified more than they were in Melee. His bombs took a different look and became slightly more powerful but harder to throw. His boomerang became the "Gale Boomerang", which pulls and pushes enemies with a small tornado that flows with the boomerang itself. It's a brutal edgeguarding tool and can throw opponents off their guard. The bow became much better with shorter charges and greater speed in the air. He also gained the clawshot over hookshot, which doesn't do any differently, but because of the new game design Link was able to grab edges a lot more easily than he did in Melee. Link improved as a character overall from start to finish, but he still is labeled a slow moving arsenal with powerful combinations, but lacks in speed and jumping.
Debate
Before you think I just wasted your time in reminding you fellow Link lovers of what Link carries around in his back pocket, think of this. Despite the fact that Link uses probably his most common weapons,
1.) Boomerang
2.) Bow
3.) Bombs
4.) Sword & Shield
5.) Hook/clawshot
which a lot of fans enjoy, people usually DON'T think of how untapped Link's weaponry potential is.
I'm not saying that Link's weapons should change. In fact, I really like his balance of range and power. I think Nintendo did their job in making Link unique with his weapons.
But what I AM saying is a question: what do you think would be a good new weapon for Link?
It doesn't neccessarily have to be a special attack. Or it could! Whatever you think. Tell me your ideas of what would be a coolish new weapon for Link.
I'm not saying that Link is stupid for having classic weapons. I'm just trying to raise an interesting topic.
My suggestions?
Ball and Chain (Twilight Princess)
Spinner (Twilight Princess)
Skull Hammer (for Toon Link) (Wind Waker)
Slingshot (many Zelda games)
Deku Nuts (it's an item, but what if Link could shock enemies on his own?)
Megaton Hammer (Ocarina of Time)
Magic Cane (many Zelda games)
Bomblings (or crawler bombs, whatever you wanna call them)
