so does this mean more tourneys will be picking up 3 stock 8 minutes? or will we continue with 2 stock until after evo?
Things will probably stay 2 stock no matter what this random online poll suggests.

Again, a good chunk of these votes (most of them, imo) come from people that do not understand the difference between casual play, and competitive play, even if you play with items off on neutral stages...

Smash 4 is too campy / defensive to have 3 stock in tournaments. The tournaments won't finish on time with a high number of entrants and smash 4 is very popular.

What others do shouldn't matter so much to you man!

Why do you care if it's 2 stock or 3 stocks at a tournament you're not attending????

If you and your friends want to play 4 stocks or more or whatever, it's all good.

Too many people feel obligated to play smash a certain way IMO. I CHOOSE to play competitive melee, I like the rules. If I didn't, I'd go back to casual play using items and whatever. It's all about what you like, and that's why smash is so great.

Too many people get caught up in the official tournament rules as if its THE WAY to play, you can play any way you want!

yes I realize I should play as I want, and technically I still qualify as a "filthy casual". I just want to be prepared for tournament when I feel I'm ready to go to one (and I have the money) anyway I'm just a random who dosnt even have a Wii u yet and wants to play the game in the way most do so I can appeal to most of the community. and my rule of thumb with any videogame is that you adjust to the game, it dosnt adjust to you.

I get that. But playing with 2 stock, or 3 stocks is such a small difference on a casual level that you shouldn't care what the pros are doing...

I hate how people think there's something wrong with being a casual, there's nothing wrong with it.

99% of the video games we play in our lives are going to be played on a "casual" level.

I love kingdom hearts 1.5 remix, I'm maxing it out and getting all the trophies...

But despite that, I'm still a CASUAL kingdom hearts player. Do I play low level runs? no. Do I speed run it? no. I take my time and enjoy the game. Nothing filthy casual about that.

The filthy casuals are the ones that think NOBODY should play competitively or for money.

Being a scrub (person who loses and blames it on everyone but thenselves) is the thing you want to avoid, not being a casual.

Man, this **** is messed up. I feel like nobody understands common sense in the smash community sometimes lol.

LOL @ 1812 people (46%) who have never played smash before smash 4 came out, yet think their opinion matters.

I'm telling you this is the problem with the game, not the ruleset, the overwhelming ammount of people who play the game yet have never been part of the smash community before that think their opinions matter...
Um... the poll is about Smash FOUR. I don't think people have to have done other Smash games competitively to have a valid opinion on THIS game.

Besides, I never played Smash competitively before Smash 4, but I'm going to my first official (read: has been to many 10-12 person tourneys) tournament this summer. For Smash 4 and PM. So don't say I can't have an opinion on this.

You can have an opinion. But considering you just picked up smash, when it's been around for almost 20 years, your opinion does not hold as much weight / wisdom as someone who played smash 64, melee, and brawl. You lack experience.

What is it about smash 4 that is drawing all these newcomers to the smash scene anyway? Must be really good advertising or something.

What is it about smash 4 that makes people who did not compete in previous versions of smash, want to compete now? Is it because it's an easier game to learn? I'm actually curious here.

I just want to mention, I misread that question as "Which other Smash games do you actively participate in?" I missed the word 'did' and thought it was a present tense question...

3 stock gonna take forever ppl but i dont mind too much about that but!!!!!! ... CUSTOMS ON REALLY!!!!! just leave smash the way its supposed to be (normal) customs is just going to destroy the meta game we already have and everyones gonna use dr mario and plautena. Customs are UNBALANCED!!! Sakurai would have to undergo a whole new nerfing and buffing system.

I did not "just pick up smash" I've been playing it since I was 7 years old, a year before Brawl came out. I didn't "just pick up smash" I just picked up COMPETITIVE Smash. And I've played every Smash game, plus PM. Don't say I don't have experience with them.

As for joining competitive, well, this makes me sound like a major scrublord, but it started for me with For Glory. I always used to be a "turn on some items and most stages and Ike and Pit are banned" kinda person, until I started playing For Glory. From there I started playing semi-competitively with some friends at school, then I started watching some streams, then we moved to full competitive rulesets, then I ordered Melee offline, then I reached into the Sm4sh competitive community, the I joined Smashboards, then I got PM, and now I'm going to an official - albeit small - tournament.

That's my story at least, so even though I've been playing Smash for 8 years, For Glory is really the main reason I'm coming into competitive.

And actually, I'm willing to bet that after Brawl came out there was a sudden influx of "newcomers." People who couldn't fare well in the competitive scene are gone now, so I think it's fair to say that they will weed out of Sm4sh as well.

My appologies for the misunderstanding.

That's a cool story. I wish you all the best success as a competitive player!

If smash 4 is bringing people that love smash (but never competed before) to the competitive scene, that's amazing...
You get where I'm coming from though. I don't like hearing opinions from people who JUST started playing smash because smash 4 came out and it's the new and shiny game. Hell, I'd go as far as to say that their opinions don't matter in the slightest not until they have a few years experience.

Finally something positive I can like about smash 4. Hats off to you sir.

I'm gonna have to show this to a friend who says only melee can be played competitively and that sm4sh is trash and is going to die.

????

You're going to show him an example of one person on smashboards who played melee casually and got into competitive smash 4 later on?

No offense, but I don't think this is a great argument for your side of things.

Sm4sh isn't trash, your friend is an elitist moron.

However, Melee is still, by far, the superior competitive game.

Smash 4 has a long future as a casual game, compeitive... well, give it a chance. But I don't see it lasting any longer than Brawl did, where as melee and smash 64 will live forever! You never know though, smash 4 could develop a great long lasting community.

yes i realize that i should play how i want becuse im "casual" but the only reason i really care is because i dont want to be. yes i also realize that theres nothing wrong with being a casual, i just like how everyone els is playing. and like in sports, some "casual'' sports players like playing with big league rules because they feel they can get to their level, but if they just play the way they want they will have a large cross over gap trying to adjust to their rules. all i want is to beat ZeRo (lol im a fanboy) in a tournament set, and i cant train for that with the wrong rules.(or i dont want to)
(also sorry I dont have common sense im new here...)

Well you can still train for that outside of competitive rules. Set the timer to infinite and combo a low lvl CPU all day. Set your handicap to 300% and try to win that way (sounds weird, but it teaches you to play differently at higher percentages). You don't have to limit yourself to tourney rules to practice these things, and if anything it's actually better because it allows you to focus on key areas of your gameplay, so once tournament time comes you can actually meld them together and play better.

is there a place to read more about ways to practice like this? like a forum or something?

Crazy thought, but what if we found a way to integrate custom stages into stage selection? Granted, we would REALLY need to play around with the definition of legal custom stages as well as undergo A LOT of testing. Most will disagree but I think it can be done. Again, we would need to experiment with it. =/

It can be done, but I'd argue it'd be boring. Aside from layout, most custom stages feel too samey to me. In my opinion one of the most important part to a stage is its presentation, which is why Fighting games come with more than one stage despite only ever having one layout. It's why I choose Omega Pilotwings over Final Destination.

oh i watch plenty of high level play
Allow me to elaborate. Watch high level play, but don't just watch it, learn from it. Understand why certain things were done and why certain things happened. Compare your gameplay to their's. What do they do that you do, what do they do that you don't?

If it weren't for watching AeroLink play Palutena, I would've never thought of fast falling Jump glide with n-air or f-air as a way to approach. If it weren't for OfficerJenny and her ZSS, I would've never practiced falling u-air. If it weren't for PinkFresh's Lucas, I would've never dropped him (too much for me right now).

Yeah they're all simple things, but simple things build up into larger things.

well clearly I need to be told how to watch a video
Well advising you would be the more appropriate term. One thing about learning is that unless you tell people, they don't know what you know, so they'll advise you things that you may already know.

If we had the option to turn off stage hazards, a lot of stages could be legal.
Pyrosphere, PKMN Stadium 2, Wily Castle deserve to be starters.
While Port Town, Mushroom Kingdom U, Gamer deserve to be counterpicks.

And Norfair would deserve testing.
