I think I've figured it out. When people team with Fabian they have to pull the team, bringing their smash to previously unfound skills. With Fabian as a partner the other player is required to hold stocks, rack damage, and kill off opponents all while keeping Fabian alive. Obviously this is no easy task. By the time singles roll around 1v1 is cake thanks to all the Fabian training. Amazing.
