I'm not sure what the new ice climber stage update says about balloon fighter's chances of getting a spot on the roster, but it says something.

I'm referring to the sea monster found in the last picture of the update, that Sakurai himself specifically points out.

"I feel like I’ve seen that fish before somewhere... Where could it have been?"

Does the monster's appearance mean balloon fighter won't have his own stage, and thereby seriously hurts his chances of being a PC? Does it make him more AT worthy?

or,

Does is the monster's inclusion, and Sakurai's special reference to it, (plus the fact that balloon fighter already has a good chance of being included), mean that his spot on he roster is almost gaurunteed? (he can share IC's stage as a retro character, much like how Ness and kirby shared a stage in SSB64 and Fire Emblem shared LoTZ's stage in SSBM).

please discuss, I'm curious.

Sakurai said back in the Melee days that he was looking for one character to pick for the "NES Era" which was out of Ice Climbers, Balloon Fighter, and other stuff including Excite Bike. His chances were mortally hurt a while ago. D:

Is there not a Balloon fighter thread? If so, post there...if not...hmm...I think you've brought up a valid point...and it's more reasonable than the Ridley/Ganon/Lucario in clouds theory...

This makes no sense. You're talking about Melee, not Brawl. i.e, based on you're logic, Pit wouldn't exist.

Please try to keep your posts relevant to the topic.

This makes even less sense. Why exactly would Pit not exist? Are you saying that Pit, like Balloon Fighter, was rejected from Melee?

Balloon Fighter was already deemed unworkable by Sakurai due to the obstacle of using balloons (it says so in the Ice Climbers' profile on the Japanese Melee site). It would be naive to think that has somehow changed.

The Ice Climbers were chosen to represent the Famicom. The fish is most likely just another way to reference a similar Famicom game. And as someone has said, you should use the main Balloon Fighter thread. A similar discussion is already going on there.

AsbestosBlatant implied balloon fighter is invalid because ice climbers took the NES spot. But now that there's Pit AND Ice Climbers, clearly there's no "only one NES" spot rule for Brawl. - His post made no sense. (no i'm not saying pit was rejected from melee wtf).

I didn't realized Balloon Fighter was deemed unworkable. If you could find a link to that website it would be great. I do know there was apparently a Balloon Fighter PC in the beta version of Melee, so that was a strong indicator for me that he had a good shot in Brawl.

Thank you, though, for staying on topic, I think you're right in that the Fish is merely a reference to another NES game, i.e., it limits BF's chances of being a PC.

P.S. - did anyone notice the Northern Lights in the background of the first picture of The Summit Stage? Cool Stuff.

Ah yes, the one thing I never understood about Balloon Fighter hopefuls was the fact that they thought he'd get over the fact Sakurai said himself that he couldn't make a moveset for them. Anyways, this fish is probably another nail in their coffin. If BF was in, he'd get the fish in his stage, not in a Ice Climbers one. Unless they represent BF with the same icon as ICs, there's no way he's getting in. =/

Hopefully Balloon Fighter isn't a PC, he would be a waste of space like Stan the bugman, make them both ATs.

I agree. I know Balloon Fighter has a good shot of being in this game, but I reaaaally don't want to see him. An assist trophy, yeah. But he's simply one of the most boring character designs I have ever seen in my life. Same can be said for something like Kirby, a pink ball, but he has an amazing videogame series under his belt. You can argue that they re-worked Pit, but honestly I think it would have been way easier to remodel a character like Pit to modern times over Balloon Fighter.

Again, yeah, I think he has a chance. And maybe that fish is a good sign of his appearance in Smash. I personally just don't want to see him. At least not before Cel-Link or Ridley or...well..list goes on.

I was thinking...it could be about NES games in general. I doubt that the Balloon Fighter will be a character. It seems more like he'll be an Assist Trophy.

Balloon Fight music was in the background of Icicle Mountain in Melee. And now, that's inspired Sakurai to merge the two even further - more than just music - does this mean BF is playable? No one can say (I repeat, NO ONE can say).

However, I'd like to point out that a BF stage would be boring as all hell. But putting a couple of references to his game, and letting him chill there? Works for me.

No, he doesn't NEED his own stage. No, he doesn't NEED to share the IC symbol in order to be on that stage. You don't make the rules here. Sakurai does.

I would think Balloon Fighter would have a small chance of making t in Brawl full stop, but it's unlinkley that he'll make it as a character.

what I'm wondering, though, is if swimming is availible. looking at the pic, it seems that Dedede is treading water, yet he could be standing on something... strange...

I don't understand this "worthiness" thing. People didn't think ICs were worthy to return to Brawl, and yet...there they are.

He's swimming alright. It's a new feature, I'm sure. I saw a video of meta knight swimming through the water in Delfino Plaza so, yeah.

As for Balloon Fighter - For his AT he would probably throw darts. Wasn't he able to do that to pop other enemies balloons? Lul, I remember playing the game on Animal Crossing for the GC, but it's kinda cloudy. All in all I don't think BF is gonna make it. He's just too. . . plain. >_>

I'm sure Balloon Fighter will make it in somehow, either as a playable character, AT, trophy, or sticker, but somehow he will be in Brawl

that is the text regarding the rejection thing. Google translator doesn't help much:

Balloon Fight割RA balloon is likely to pit
They seem to lack ABANCHANPION WAZA
Roll Land I do not know how to fight and
Excitebike jump start TSUKURANAKYA
(That's not the problem but)

Yeah, that is the Ice Climber's icon, it's the eggplant from the Ice Climber's game. There is no way that the Balloon Fighter would have that icon.

Wait, wait, wait.

Not sure if this is true or not, but wasn't Pit also considered for Melee, but rejected since Sakurai had issues getting flying characters to work properly? If this is true, we can see that just because a problem impeded development in Melee, that doesn't necessarily mean the same will happen for Brawl.

Don't have a source, just something I've seen thrown around various forums. That's why I'm kinda asking for someone with more knowledge on the subject to verify this as being true or false.

Again, people, Balloon Fighter would not require his own stage in order to be playable. If anything, he'd be able to share the Summit. And NO, in order to do so, he would NOT require to have the IC symbol. If Sakurai wants him to share the stage, then he'll share the **** stage.

Seriously - what would a Balloon Fight stage be? Quite literally nothing. The stages wouldn't allow for much creativity, since there's basically nothing there to work with. So what did Sakurai do? He took the most workable thing from such a stage, and gave it to the Ice Climbers' stage - now, DESPITE the symbols, it can double as both an IC stage AND a BF stage, should he be playable.

If you notice the actual stage has little to do with the Ice climbers.
The summit falls down the mountain into the water. NOTHING like that happens in the iceclimber story.
And obviously the stage doesnt just get reset back at the top of the mountain. It Goes somewhere and stays there after the iceburg sinks.

The 2nd half of the stage is the Baloon fighter part.

I don't see any reference to balloon fighter in this stage other than the fish.

the 2nd half of the stage is the Metroid part.

I repeat, what part of ICE CLIMBERS has anything to do with that? There isn't any water in that game.

this place is sure pretty, I sure as hell don't remember anything that looked like that in the game.

You go inside plenty of castles with statues in Fire Emblem, and at the end of Kid Icarus, you fly around on the top.
