But on a poll that has very few Japanese voters, virtually no one has played the games the characters are coming from.

And we don't even really. We just think Sakurai does so we've almost fooled ouraelves into actually caring. (For most people) Heck, my 500 results top 40 was 5 Small franchises (One retro), 10 Third parties, and 25 characters from existing franchises. We want expansion of existing franchises for the most part.

I think for the most part, most of the requested characters during Brawl who didn't actually get in Brawl are still requested relatively frequently. It's only been five years, and it's not like there has been many "major" characters introduced, or suddenly become more important within' their franchise. Palutena would be the exception for the former, and Bowser Junior would be the exception for the latter.

And yes, Palutena might have well been newly introduced to the series, because prior to her reveal for KI:U, no one wanter her. OR Medusa for that matter. KI:U MADE those characters.

I'm not sure why people are automatically assuming Venus of the Desert Bloom is the Japanese voter. He hasn't logged on this site ever since February 13th, 2013, so we don't even know if he's even aware of this poll.

Bowser Jr. seems popular even here, just to a lesser extent, since we're also pretty much the only place requesting Toad as well.

A possible explanation for returning stages being almost universally ranked higher than new ones is that the poll lists returning stages at the top of each series' list of options. Since a lot of people only care about voting for characters at this point, but want to finish the poll, they may just click the first option they see to rush through as quickly as possible. If a future poll gets made, it would be interesting to place all returning stages at the bottom instead to see if the results change.

Odd, I thought Bowser Jr's popularity was stronger on here than on most websites. I noticed more supporters of him on here for one.

Chances are the Mario characters to skyrocket if that happens. I'm not against it, at least they vote seriously, but only a few people there (from my experience) are actually decent speculators.

I've always thought that Mario character has very strong popularity in the West anyway, so considering how big the YouTube community is, I wouldn't be surprised to see a jump in requests for Mario rep, especially Junior since I see a ton of rosters with him on it.

Layton is one of the few third party characters I believe would fit in exactly with the Nintendo characters. Same with Geno and Bomberman

Like John, I could also argue why I think Mega Man fits in really well with the Nintendo world (although it'd be really difficult by nature), but I do have something that Sakurai just might consider with Geno; that he would be the easiest character to fit in of all the third-party reps.

This is because his only major role was in a Mario game and he might as well be considered a Mario character since he's never appeared outside of Mario titles. I think Geno along with the contents of Super Mario RPG can fit in pretty easily in comparison to other third-parties and that could play an advantage for Geno.

It's mostly a mix of people who think Bayonetta is a Nintendo character now (or think that the exclusivity of Bayonetta 2 basically amounts to the same thing), people who are reading too much into Sakurai visiting Platinum, people wanting more female characters, and then the character's actual uninflated popularity.

Takamaru is relatively obscure, and only the more knowledgeable or experience speculators really know about him. Like I'd guess most people taking the poll from the site itself instead of a link off another site don't know who he is. And they make up a fair percentage. Even the people who know who he is might not support him, or might want to see another retro character more. And yeah, I've played (but not beaten) Takamaru's game. Pretty fun, but also pretty hard. It's similar to the original Zelda, but more linear. You don't really need to know Japanese to play it.

And Dr. Mario never really was a retro. When he was included in Melee, he had just had Dr. Mario 64 come out, and now he had that WiiWare game a couple years back, so technically he's still current.

I would like to have voted for Impa. I find it likely that she will be Sheik's replacement (but have the exact same fighting style to keep fans happy), so it's not like she NEEDS much popularity, but still.

Everyone else I want is still there though. It's a relief to see that most of the top 10 make sense (Roy doesn't, but he can be a costume clone for Marth and it should still be okay).

I wish that there was a way to vote others down though. In that case, I'd vote down Waluigi (unoriginal piece of crap with no importance), Krystal (Star Fox doesn't deserve 4 reps, the other SF reps can be decloned and half her fans only like her because she's furry boobs), and Tetra/Toon Zelda (I love Wind Waker, but a second Toon character?)

I think Dark Samus deserves more attention. Metroid needs a third rep, she has amazing moveset potential, she is a playable Metroid and a great choice all around.

As for stages, I would like to see Comet Observatory, Bowser's Castle in some form, Gangplank Galleon, the Fallen Arm from Xenoblade, and Lunar Sanctum from Kid Icarus: Uprising.
