I just think characters should have to wait to prove they’re long lasting and beloved before they join smash.
I would imagine in that timeline, Inkling would be a DLC character for Ultimate because the series was too recent when the game was planned, Lucario and Greninja are moved a game while Fire Emblem has a chance of being Japan exclusive or dead if the series didn’t join in Melee or Brawl.

The only one I’ll disagree on is the Inklings. People were really gunning for them even during Smash 4 and Splatoon was a breakout success. I think They’ed proven themselves by Ultimate Basegame.

Maybeee Lucario as well cause I don’t know how old gen 4 was when Brawl released or when that Lucario movie came out. Both of those would have had the chance to really up Lucario’s popularity.

Also there’s the common argument that Greninja wouldn’t even be as popular as he is if he never made it into smash so by these rules we probably would never have gotten him.

We would have a lot more Gen 1 pokemon though.

...how do you embed tweets on this site nowadays?
They've been broken for a while, now, unfortunately. Tweets don't render properly on this site right now and the whole "There was a problem fetching the tweet" error is a lot more common.

It's nice to know inventory isn't gonna be a problem but we still don't know if the price is gonna change.

I still don’t understand why you hate the Japanese so much
I don't hate the japanese. I'm actually like really into their culture and folklore. I just know that when animating characters they pull from a different set of stock iconography and tropes that they just don't do in the west. Like just compare mario and co in Odyssey vs. in the the Mario + Rabbids games and you can just tell one was japanese and one was not. And since Donkey Kong has had that distinctly western animation language since country, changing it to the asian perspective just feels... uncanny. One isn't inherently better or wore than the other but they are different and I don't think the one fits Donkey Kong all that well. Like even in the Smash trailers with K. Rool's sleeping nose bubble, it just feels wrong for these characters. And maybe that's part of the reason they changed all the designs so much, so they wouldn't look weird doing these new expressions from another visual language. But I still don't think it looks right.

Well it certainly looks different, but I don’t think it looks wrong. First of all K Rool with a snot bubble never bothered me. As an animation nerd I recognized it as a trope that leaned more “anime” than “looney tunes”, but it was still funny and it literally doesn’t even matter.

Second of all, western and eastern animation are obviously different genres. But when it comes to the zany, toony stuff they took a lot of inspiration from our classic slapstick cartoons like Tom & Jerry. The divide isn’t as big as you think. There are gags that wouldn’t feel out of place in an American cartoon, like DK getting crushed by the rock at the end of the trailer.

Thirdly and finally, I think a lot of the “wrongness” you feel is a resistance to change. You just don’t like this character you like looking and acting different, for any reason. It should stay the way you like it.

A couple years ago TPC released a short called “Bidoof’s Big Stand”. It was animated quite differently from other Pokemon media, and was clearly done by a western studio with more western sensibilities. I didn’t get mad that it was different and strange and wrong, I embraced a piece of Pokemon content being made by a different culture for once. It was really fun to see, and I’d welcome more of that in the future.

No you don’t understand!

They got the British and the Americans to make monkey games so now only western countries can make monkey games or the franchise is ruined!
I mean kinda yeah. Every piece of actual DK iconography comes from the games Rare made, and a little of the stuff Retro made. The only thing Miyamoto ever contributed (that stuck around) was “big ape with this name throws barrels”. Arcade DK is certainly iconic in its own right but it makes up a very tiny fragment of the series identity. The series is barely a Japanese series and it’s always felt more like Rare’s baby than nintendos.

I don’t know. You’re kinda right. You get used to things being a certain way for so long it just… it doesn’t help that I associate change with negativity because it just reminds me of loosing things. Just things, being it people or resteraunts or cartoons or anything, just going away forever never to come back and all the potential happiness they could have brought me just never happening. Not to mention the big change in 2016 that made me loose faith in humanity.

And I don’t know. Maybe if I had some assurance that there would be more games in the future with the old design and that aren’t made in Japan this would be easier to swallow. It’s not like that Bidoof short was the start of what pokemon was going to be in it’s entirety for all time.

Also I loved the Crash cast’s redesigns in Crash 4 so I’m not 100% change averse.
I think stuff like Eevee or Gengar are fine but not to an extent of those rosters where it’s just Gen 1 + Newest Generation.

While Meowth is sometimes mentioned, not even sure if it’s actually that popular nowadays if you exclude the anime version.
I mean the anime is a big part of why people like Pokemon.

Maybe it feels like Rare’s baby to you, but Rare hasn’t worked with the series since the turn of the millennium. That doesn’t mean ditch everything they created (which they notably haven’t done even though they’ve had plenty of opportunities) but I don’t think the series has to be so beholden to the whims of a studio that hasn’t had any say for years, to the point where Nintendo can’t do anything new without making sure it passes “the Rare test” which is completely arbitrary and varies depending on the sensibilities of each individual fan.

Now I can’t tell the future. Who knows, maybe another western studio will make a DK game. It’s possible. But the whole reason they took Donkey Kong internally is because they were sick of him being bounced around from studio to studio. They wanted him to get consistent game releases with one developer, not counting possible spin offs. But there hasn’t even been room for spin offs because the franchise is always getting tossed to a new studio and having to be reinvented.

At least this way DK can stop starting from scratch and have room to grow again, for the first time in decades really. I’d rather the series be taken in by a Japanese team that’s passionate about working on it then them pushing it onto another western studio who’ll make a couple games and then ditch the series again.

See I’d rather the opposite, if these are the only two options (Nintendo owns next level games they could have been the series new home). I’d rather the games come out fewer if that means that he doesn’t have to be Anime-ified and Mario-ized.

They also own Retro, and look where that went. I don’t know if NLG was the permanent solution either.

If you’d really prefer no more Donkey Kong games over Donkey Kong games with a different artstyle, then that’s your prerogative. Thats not the reality we live in though.

Here in the real world Bananza’s coming out in three months and it looks dope, so :dkmelee:

You think it looks dope. I think it looks like a Mario game where the gimmick is breaking things instead of throwing your hat.

Did the audience freak tf out when he said C****** J*****?
Nah, it was a small audience.

I will say him going SLIME BLOCK actually broke me

Is there a post credit scene where a lady shows up, kills some bad guys, and says “I… am ALEX”?
No.

But Alex actually is the post credit scene

The soundtrack to The Legend of Zelda is really rad, but those creatures from Ganon are pretty bad.

What I'm saying is NES Legend of Zelda is now on Nintendo Music, Famicom included.
if the Zelda rap ain’t on the app then what’s the point

Why is that specifically a meme?
Funny word + the way he says it + it's actually true. Chicken Jockies are the spawn of Satan.

It's a joke that works both ways.

Audiences that don't know Minecraft will think it's funny/dumb cause "Haha Jason Mamoa getting beaten up by a baby on a chicken."

Audiences that do know Minecraft know how much of a pain in the ass Chicken Jockies are.

For me it's even more funny because Chicken Jockeys are so rare.

Like, maybe I've seen one once in all my hours of playing Minecraft. And now it's ubiquitous because of the Minecraft Movie it's hilarious.
