I honestly believe the main reason Nuts & Bolts git nearly as much hate as it did was because it portrayed the original games as outdated, boring junk and more or less vocally insulted it's own target audience to justify the change of genre and gameplay in-universe.

If it had been handled with more tact, the game might have gotten a warmer reception from fans. Not without detractors, but certainly better reception than what it originally got and has for years.
Ehhhh, to a non-vocal minority probably, but let's be honest, the loudest thing that was said about Banjo Kazooie was "It's not like the old games/the car."

Yeah, there's definitely people that point at the intro cutscene and how it makes light of the old games and the fans of said games, but go to any video "reviewing" it and you'll mainly just see complaining about "The car".

Imagine putting Banjo in a vehicle.

Real talk for a moment, I think there's a market for a Nuts and Bolts today, at least a spiritual successor. When I get students to talk about their dream game, a lot of them just end up describing Nuts and Bolts.

But yeah.

There's nothing wrong with the idea of a new Banjo game.

Hell, look at Crash 4. Crash 4 is a great game.......as long as you don't try to 100% it. Just, I 100% can see the video essays that are long enough to hit ad runtime proclaiming how it's bad because it's not the same.

Crash 4 had me not want to participate in its bull****. I just ended up skipping anything that wasn't mandatory and is probably the only Crash game that led to me not caring about getting the crates.

I stand by that Crash 4 is a good game, but it's got some DK64ness in terms of "There's TOO much stuff"

When Caddicarus, the 1# Crash guy can't take it, you know there's 'too' much.

I honestly ended up channeling the AVGN the way I listed out all the stuff that ticked me off as I played through it.

I've heard this complaint before but no idea where it comes from as I didn't play the game - what's wrong with Sea of Stars?

So every Sonic game release ever, got it.
Sea of Stars is a pretty standard RPG and the writers hate that so they feel the need to look straight into the camera and mock The Thing They Are Doing and go "Hahaha" because if you say your story is cliche and have standard RPG stuff to the player, then the player suddenly won't notice it and think it's actually funny and clever! Also the character literally named after the word cliche isn't the character constantly winking at the audience and is instead played straight, what the hell happened there
you see the most absurd switch ups
Case and point to the Banjo discussion, remember how many people kept saying "APOLOGIZE TO NUTS AND BOLTS" cause of TotK's vehicle crafting stuff? I'd joke about people pretending Sonic 06 is secretly a masterpiece when you stop being unfair and biased, but people already do that

No, you don’t understand, if they just gave it the same treatment as Sonic X Shadow Generstions, fixed the bugs, fixed the camera, fixed the loading time, improved the graphics, make the multiplayer mode compatible with online, removed the questionable human-hedgehog romance plot, I promise it would sell a Mephillion copies :nifty:

I haven't played the game, but I know it's a prequel to The Messenger and the writing in that game is pretty much the same and I found it mildly funny at times because the game is fairly light on story, meaning it doesn't overstay its welcome. I would hate to play a story based game written like this

People straight up didn’t want Banjo and Karts. They wanted Banjo 3. Since they didn’t get banjo 3, they refused to buy banjo and karts.

Besides all of that, the people that made up Rare are long gone.

I think more games should openly mock their fans if gamers are so comfortable personally insulting developers over the slightest perceived mistake.
that’s asking to get bad reviews and poor sales. Not a good idea.

Writers trying to invoke Deadpool humor in story-based games is a bizarre choice. With the Deadpool movie trilogy, it works because it's not only accurate to the character, but the movies also aren't inherently story-driven to begin with and never were meant to be taken seriously at all.

…I’ve never seen something so simultaneously right and wrong.

Like on the one hand I agree with this. On the other. It is a horrible idea.

You see, I liked the Deadpool trilogy less and less with each entry because as you said, they aren't meant to be taken seriously. And yet, there are scenes where you need to take the story because you simply can't fill a full blockbuster movie with nothing but action scenes and jokes.

So, instead, there are these awkward moments where the movies stop the wacky stuff and expect the audience to pretend there was a proper story. Which doesn't always work well as the sequels roll along.

Heck. I’d say 100%-ing it is fine. It’s going to 106% that’s really bad.

Also to add to this, the Xbox just wasn't the platform for a cutesy cartoon mascot, even if the game was meant for adults.

When people bought an Xbox, they wanted stuff like, Halo. That kinda stuff works on Nintendo or Sony, but.... Xbox?
I still don’t get why people make this argument. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

Everyone who reads the manga saw the Shanks evil twin plot twist coming but I didn’t think Oda would name him Shamrock.

Shanks & Shamrock sound like a Cheech & Chong gimmick

It's been forever since I saw 1 or 2 and I never saw 3 so I can't go in depth but I remember 2 focusing on a story with Deadpool bonding with the kid as a way to move on from losing his girlfriendso it was definitely story driven if I remember this right. Though to be fair, there's a difference between a movie featuring a character known for being wacky and quirky and a game that keeps going "Remember Chrono Trigger? We love Chrono Trigger" and "Heh, isn't it weird how all RPGs are like this?"

I mean, how many cutesy mascot platformers thrived on the Xbox? Even Microsoft's own crack at the genre, Blinx, is basically a forgotten IP whose devs are embarrassed of him.

Xbox was the dudebro console and kinda aggressively marketed as such. It was for your Cawadootie and Halo. It really wasn't til the 360 that they tried to cash in on the more Wii crowd with stuff like the Kinect.

If they had made more of them, people would have bought more of them and the odds of them being better would go up.

Game consoles should be like dvd players. Imagine telling me that only a certain brand of dvd was compatible with a certain player? That sounds nuts. And on top of that imagine saying that only certain genres released for certain players because “audiences only buy that for certain players anyway”.

Like, I’m just saying, we let a lot of stuff fly in gaming that would not fly in any other media type and I think we should finally stop it.

This radicalized me to be a socialist when I was 8 years old wanting to play Sonic Rush right after getting a GBA

Finished another piece. It came out decently enough, if not a little cartoony-er than I wanted it to be. But still not bad.
