Spotdodging and teching off the stage? Like... I don’t even know what that means?
Spotdodging is a game mechanic where you drop your shield for a few frames and give yourself temporary invulnerability. it’s a very vital thing to know in competitive since the difference between having your shield be attacked or letting it harmlessly pass through you is pretty big.
All you have to do to perform it is push your shield button, then pull down on the joystick. pretty simple stuff, the hard part with it is learning when the right time to spot dodge is. do it at the wrong time, and you leave yourself wide open for all sorts of punishes.
teching off the stage is a bit trickier, but it’s not monumentally so. it uses the same premise as spotdodging, just slightly different execution: when you’re in the air or off-stage, you’re very vulnerable, and obviously, your opponents will be ready to punish you if you make a mistake. However, teching does allow you to have a bit of control over that. When you hit the ground, you have an 11(I think?) frame window to hit the shield button. If you hit it during that time, you’ll land right up and have a few frames of invulnerability. Of course, that’s just the basic kind of tech(yeah, you heard me right, there’s more than one kind of tech
) but that’s the gist of how it works.
Really, the easiest way to get better at the game is to experiment with everything and anything, until you feel comfortable with how you play. Have you tinkered with the controls, for example?(at the very least, changing the right stick to a tilt attack rather than a smash attack is basically required for high levels of play.) Have you tried different characters to see if you like someone else’s playstyle a bit more than your current main? Maybe practice some combos with another character and see if you can do them easily. Stuff like that creates a foundation, and then you can build on it by learning the more complex stuff for the character(s) you main.
