They 'could' sure.
But 3rd party characters are guests at the end of the day, and they're basically treated as such, getting the red carpet rolled out for them, since them coming to Smash is a big occasion.
The only 3rd party characters to not get stages were Richter and Ken, and they were still revealed in big, flashy CG trailers.
1st party? Yeah, I'd buy that.

I don’t see why they can’t do something they’ve never done before. Like.... they aren’t robots or math problems. They have free will and can do whatever they want.

Like I said, it could happen.
But when we see that 3rd party characters are held on a higher pedestal, and get all the fixings for advertisement, I severely doubt we'd ever get one as a "Bonus" fighter unless they were an echo.
Well, most characters in both passes are third party. Who’s to say that they can’t get lots of work done to make one a bonus character?

He didn't even say it wasn't something that couldn't happen, though. He just said he was doubtful.
Plus, he's right: They've never treated 3rd parties as "one more thing" inclusions: They're always treating super well and get a bunch of stuff with 'em. I really don't see us getting a third party without at least a stage and music, IMO.

Well, Sakurai for one, considering he's hammered in that the last 2 are done and done.
There's a possibility there could be a "SURPRISE!" at the end, but I'm very hard pressed to believe they'd give away a 3rd party character for free.

It's not though.
In Smash 4, Sonic was the only veteran to get his own dedicated trailer and he got a new stage to boot. All the 3rd parties in Ultimate got big band presentation with Sakurai just flexing how much content they got from 3rd parties and how much attentiom to detail they put into them. Just look at Terry or Steve's presentation vs. Pyra or MinMin's. The difference is night and day.

The taxes in the land enraged the people, which caused a revolt... this enraged hitler's father, and he was punished severely.
Unless it is from a character from a third party series already in Smash. As cool as it would be, Geno was in a Mario game, and may not need a stage for that matter.
Still, more so than Geno being a bonus,

I think the logic of "Just because they haven't, doesn't mean they can't!" really needs to end, tbh.
At the end of the day, Smash is a lot of business negotiations behind closed doors.
If they're a free bonus, why would they be?
If they're a paid bonus.... then that basically goes against Sakurai's own M.O. when it comes to 3rd parties. Sakurai loves rolling out the red carpet for them, hell, like Potato mentioned, SONIC got a trailer for Smash 4 despite him being a veteran, he was basically put head and shoulders above the regular reveals.
Just having a standalone character that doesn't bring music or a stage would honestly be worse than how FF7 was handled in Smash 4 tbh.
More Than Cloud and Sephiroth or just as much?

Japan copyright law is much weirder and much stricter and if Sephiroth's reveal means anything, soundtrack rights are literally all over the world and legal crap and stuff and I'm not a lawyer nor becoming one I don't know
