This is a precautionary step I will take to improve the future of all Hacked Smash. If something like this had been done before the texture hacks had been released en masse, the process of going through them all would be much easier. Though indeed, these hacks will be much different than the folk art which it is proper to define texture hacks as.

I shall rate Project Zero Hacks.

I will be checking up every few days to see if there is a new Project Zero Hack released. If so, I will write a review of the current release of it if it piques my interest. As the final version of hacks will be doubtless different than their first release, updates may be edited into the review if I have the time.

I won't be able to do this alone. So, if you see a hack you want to review, post your own review here and drop me a pm so I can update this post with the link.

Please excuse my writing style. I'm back after a long hiatus from the literary arts, and need some time to get back in the swing of things.

Q&A

Q: Do you really think that the program will become that popular?
A: Yes I do.

Q: The score for X hack is too low/too high!
A: Then discuss it. Tell me why. If there's enough support for a change, I'll offer an alternative review alongside the original.

Q: I want to write a review for X hack!
A: Why didn't you read the first part of the post?

Q: You deniedmy review from theFRONT PAGE notice@!! WHyz?
A: It could be lacking proper proofreading, I might think you are being too generous or are trying to troll, or something so bleedingly obvious that you should figure it out for yourself. I HAVE standards, and even if they are a tad high for an internet personality, I still want them understood. You don't have to be formal, just good.

A Phoenix Mario Review

Phoenix Mario, the first ever full hack of a brawl character, is, in my mind, the most fun to play as character in the history of smash. Thats a tough thing to say for me (Kirby in 64 and G&W in vBrawl used to share the crown), but the speed, fluidity, and bag-of-tricks ideal upon which PMario was based are wonderful to say the least.

I was visiting smashboards for the first time in weeks, and went out looking for oddities. This was one. I downloaded it and installed it, finding the improvements to Mario well worth looking past the flaws I found. If you haven't downloaded it yet, do so here. Now.

Graphically, Phoenix Mario is based on Fire in every way. Almost every attack (save for usmash and dtilt) has fire in some way attached to it. Fire balls, bursts, beams, and blasts are all visible prominently. The graphical design is an excellent set of variations upon a theme, though a couple of the animations are flawed (the biggest thing being that a hole can be seen in Mario's head during one victory pose). A particularly nice touch is the blast of fire put out by the fireballs as they traverse the ground.

But the big question is: How does he play?

Well, overpowered is not the word for him. Well, I'll discuss just two moves, the big offenders.

The Down Special- A Burning and Infuriating Device.

PMario uses Down B to unleash a blast of vertical flame on his opponent. It has very low knockback, but more than makes up for it by its spacing possibilities. It comes out instantly and is a better keep-away move than even Snake's Tilts with such an enormous range. Ike players, you've found a nemesis in Phantom Wings. This attack destroys people with low jumps, and anyone who doesn't like to approach from above. It also can be the most annoying surviving and edgeguarding tool I've ever seen. For one thing, all momentum is completely gone after a DownB. You can use it to survive most anything, by using it once, approaching the stage, using it again, 2nd jump, and UpBing. For another thing, it can be chained indefinitely together in the air. You will float in one spot and stay there for good. Doing it off a ledge is another way to stall for long periods. This will be the bane of PMario casual matches. However, this pales in comparison to the FAir.

FAir- The Death Ray

Think Fox's shine and Falcon's Knee from Melee combined. Now laugh at their weakness. The Death Ray is ten times more powerful. This is what happens: Mario does his normal FAir animation, and fires a very long beam of flame at the opponent. The whole thing is a meteor smash. It goes through ledges. It slopes outward slightly. It can be used to kill a Metaknight off of Final Destination at 0% if done right. There are so many uses and so many explatives about this one move it does me no good to mention them all here. Try it for yourself. If you use it on your friend in a surprise casual match, two things will happen:

1. You will win.

2. Your friend will take up PMario and hate you forever.

I will never go back to normal Mario. There is a lot of fun to be had in this hack. I hereby officially name it the Project Zero cannon hack for Mario (Whatever that means). Whilst the two moves I mentioned have room for improvement, the majority of the character is well balanced and honed.

Score: 9.6 out of 10

Best Part: Phoenix Mario is FUN to play as.

Worst Part: The Hole in Mario's head.

Highly Recommended

wtf. This is horrible.

Phantom Mario is NOT meant to be played as.
He is a completely broken character.
If Phantom Mario gets a 9.6, I would hate to see how the rest of the scores go.
Phantom Wings has done an amazing job with Project SA, but Phantom Mario was more of a "You can do this" example than a "I made this for people to use" example.

You rated Phoenix Mario 9.6? He's amazing from a this-has-never-been-done-before technical perspective, but design-wise, he's terrible. Nothing was really considered for balance (his wonky dash speed, the hitbox on fair, worthless fsmash, weird ftilt, infinite stalling down-B, etc.), and he's still largely just Mario with a crazy fair and no cape. Sure, he's fun to screw around with for awhile, but anything that isn't a blatantly terrible character would be fun to do that with just because it's new.

If you think PM is an almost perfect character, I dread to see what you think is a bad one.

Edit: I like Dantarion.

man you suck at rating PMario is not meant to play as it was made as an this is the potential of Project SA it was made so you can understand just how epic the projecct is but overall it is a broken, metaknight character that can pwn anyone in 5 seconds he was created to look cool not the brawl. NO NO NO he is WORSE then meta-knight if anything he is like... Eyedol, Rambo, Arceus, and Metaknight combined. okay maybe not THAT broken but he's broken

Like the others said, Phoenix Mario is just an example of what can be done with such hacks. Phoenix Mario isn't what Project SA is. A rating should be given to Project SA's potential, not the characters made from it.

How is he broken? His down-B, fair, and speed? Maybe his forward-B? Those are the only things that have any broken characteristics.

This thread needs to just disappear... your judgment obviously can't be trusted on this, especially when something like a rating system should be based on a community opinion, rather than a single person's ideals.

The brawlhacks wiki already serves an appropriate medium for such moveset edits, which will easily be able to catalog them and keep them available for viewing and download. A link to an index of these hacks will be all that's needed.

Yeah PW is not broken in the least. He still can't beat his bad matchup. (I don't use his broken moves)
Without them, he's above average. (High tier ish)

Just wait until it fully comes out bro.

I'm inclined to agree that this thread is premature and right now uneccessary. I can see use for a place to collect character modifications once the project's program is released (although I doubt there will be very many player made characters of quality). But right now, it just doesn't achieve anything and the board is filling up with Project SA stuff as it is.
