This year, as we know, is the 25th anniversary of one of the most groundbreaking video games ever.

That's right, Super Mario Bros. - the best-selling video game of all-time.

Throughout the years, it has seen several remakes and re-releases. The 1993 remake for the Super NES was featured as part of Super Mario All-Stars. Like the other SMB games, it features enhanced graphics and music.

Then came Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, released in 1999 for the Game Boy Color. In addition to playing the game in a similar fashion to the 1985 original, there were several new features: a Challenge Mode where you collect Red Coins and a Yoshi Egg in each level, a You VS. Boo Mode where you must beat each level before Boo does, and a Toy Box and Album. However, the graphics overall were similar to latter-day NES graphics.

Now, to mark the game's anniversary, Nintendo should release a version for the DS (or 3DS) which has graphics similar to and in some areas exceeding the SNES style, while retaining the additional features from the GBC version - and maybe even some new features, like unlockable, graphically-enhanced remakes of Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Mario Bros. - with each game containing some new features not in the original (some of the latter's would come from a JP=only sequel).

The game probably won't be released this year, but if you think this is a good idea, post. And if you have any ideas for new features, say so please.

Well that was, more or less, akin to Super Mario World more than Super Mario Bros, but yeah, if it hasn't been announced yet I doubt we'll get another platformer this year.

Hopefully it will come eventually. All we have to do is petition Nintendo to do the remake, if not for this year then maybe for 2012 (the latest we can get is 2015 for the 3DS, as that year is going to be the 30th anniversary of SMB).

I beat SMB3 recently, it's what made me want SMG2 so much. You know, for a 1980ish game, it's aged well. Co-op is still fun as **** and yet annoying. Zelda didn't age too well, but it's fine. Metroid aged well imo, but Mario.. it's still amazing. (And I'm not even a hardcore mario fan XD)

Super Mario Galaxy 2 may turn out to be the big 25th anniversary game for Mario, as Zelda Wii is looking to be the 25th anniversary game for Zelda come spring '10.

I didn't play the first, but everyone says it is. And it isn't really easy to me, either. It still has nothing on Mario1/3 for the NES though, but it's still a very hard game, yet fun too. SM1/3 are more hard than fun XD.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 and New Super Mario Bros. together sum up the 25th anniversary pretty well. :D
Agreed. SMG2 shows how well the Mario series have transcended over time into the 3D realm. NSMBW meanwhile shows that the classic 2D formula is still enjoyable.
