I didn't care for it either, but I think he's referring to actually buying custom (wanted) upgrades and such. I would assume they're still for trophies...

Anyways, cool update for the visuals. It's going to be strange going back to how it was with SSB64 (stage one: Zelda... three: Pokémon), unless perhaps I'm misinterpreting it?
