My name is Frown (ok not really) and I got a Premium membership seven minutes after they were announced. I've spent almost 100 dollars on buying memberships of other members and the part of the boards that I visit the most is the Disco Room, the social hangout for Premium members. If you aren't familiar with the place, there are a few things you might think:
The Disco Room is just like the Legion of Doom and the Backroom.
FALSE. Unlike the LoD and the BR, members of the Disco Room are not handpicked by the staff. This means that anyone who wants gets in, as long as he or she has a PayPal account with at least 4 dollars.
The Disco Room is just filled with spam and post count hunting.
FALSE. Many SWF regulars can have a lot of fun in the Disco Room and we have actually pulled off some cool stuff together.
The Disco Room doesn't contain spam and post count hunting.
FALSE. While there are a lot of 'cool' people, there are also those who just go there to gain a higher post count. As a matter of fact, we have a thread just for this where people often post more than five posts in a row.
Many people are infracted in the Disco Room.
FALSE. It's virtually impossible to get a minor infraction in the Disco Room. There is no pressure to stay on topic or avoid double posting or dodging the 10char rule.
The Disco Room is inactive
FALSE. Due to the lack of moderation, there is usually A LOT of activity in the Disco Room. On average, we make about 340 new posts each day.
Then what does a normal Disco Room thread look like? Well, let's see an example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5c84XafcnMs
Basically, anything you can think of. A forum game? Sure. A thread dedicated to what you had for lunch? Sure. A tier discussion thread? Sure, but expect it to go off topic before you've reached the second page.
Now for the final question: Is it worth it to get Premium Membership? You'll often hear Disco Room regulars say that it's a horrible place, but it really isn't. If you love this site and have a few dollars to spend, I say you should go for it.
