A counterpick stage is a stage that you select in order to counter your opponent's character or help your own. For example, suppose I'm playing as Mario; Mario's very good on stages with platforms so, to help him out, I could choose Battlefield as a counterpick. Another example is that my opponent is using Ike; Ike doesn't have a very good recovery so I could pick Frigate Orpheon to put him at a disadvantage based on the stage alone.
