As I've stated, I personally love the idea of the Koopalings being used as alts. Like others have mentioned it adds characters into a game that otherwise would have more than likely never seen the light of day for Smash as playable characters and really utilizes the emphasis of alt costumes over swapped colors.

Fortunately for some, this may be the case, and unfortunately for others, this seems to be a hindrance in choosing Bowser Jr. to play with.

BUT, we also do not know if there will be a special case for Bowser Jr.! Sakurai said all the characters have 8 aesthetic appearances in this game, which lines up with the Koopaling theory, BUT we are still just speculating. Perhaps they have chosen to go the route of Wario from Brawl? He had, I believe, 12 costume/colors to choose from (retro Wario/WarioWare Wario and their respective color swaps). Who knows if Sakurai will make an exception for Bowser Jr. too in this game. I would love it if we got the Koopalings AND then a few colors for Jr. himself. I think that would appeal to EVERYONE...and if not, then you're just too picky. :p lol

Some may say this is impossible, but look at the exceptions he has made so far: All characters have a main moveset, plus two additional custom moves per special that are relative in nature to the original (i.e. Mario fireball, speed fireball, orb fireball)...except for Palutena and Miis who have COMPLETELY unique custom moves lol.

So perhaps Sakurai and team can make another exception with this and pull a fast one and give us the Koopalings, plus a handful of color swaps just for Bowser Jr. I think getting color swaps for ALL Koopalings on top of that would just be greedy haha. But I would die to see Ludwig with fire red hair and a black base. :D

So the speculation still stands and we will have to wait to see what happens...the good news is we should know sometime next weekend! :)

Perhaps Bowser Jr., and each Koopaling could receive eight recolors, though it does make you wonder how much memory that'll consume.

What if more than one player wants to use Bowser Jr.. If Bowser Jr. doesn't have recolors, you'd be forced to use a Koopaling when you don't want to use him/her.
64 colors total, that might be too much.

This gave me a great idea!! How about if you can also change the color of the Koopa Clown Car?! It's obvious! That way you can choose 4 Jr.'s with different colors! How could I be so blind!?

Now I'm 90% sure that the Koopalings are in.

I ship this so hard. I'm really beginning to hype about Jr. So the leak wasn't ALL bad.

I created/posted these the other day thinking this is how the Koopalings would look, which might also now allow Bowser Jr. to get his own colors for his clown car/his actual character model.

I reckon Roy's should be the same colour as his glasses

That was a huge decision for me on Roy...it was made tougher knowing that he is my most beloved Koopaling haha.

I debated on whether his Clown Car trim and propeller should be either light pink (head color), magenta/bright pink (glasses color), or purple (shell color).

I went with purple in the end to match his shell because the light pink was too reminiscent of Wendy's Clown Car and while the bright magenta color would be different from the pale pink of Wendy, I eventually went purple in the end with reference to his shell and it being noticeably different from Wendy overall.

My TRUE hopes for Roy would be purple trim and propeller with his glasses being ON THE CLOWN CAR. Then I would die the happiest person ever lol.

EDIT: When I get home from the office tonight I will see if I could mock up both of those and see how they look.

Lemmy's shell is a bit more orange, so I'd say his car should have an orange rim, while Iggy's should be more yellow simply to differentiate it from Bowser Jr.'s a bit more.

This Clown Car's color scheme is extremely similar to Bowser Jr.'s Clown Car. You might want to think of something more discrete haha.
The color is different from Bowser Jr.'s, however like you said, it is minor in its difference. But unlike Roy, Iggy doesn't have a whole lot of options; he's got bright green, brighter green, and slightly darker green. lol

The only different colors I could possibly see working is the dark green bits at the end of his hair or the lemony-green color inside the septor's "smoke". I can give those green variants a try later on, though I suspect that the first green will still be similar to Jr. and the more yellowy green from the "smoke" will be ultimately similar to Lemmy's car color.

EDIT:

That was going to be my next thought!

I originally chose the yellow for Lemmy to coincide with his hair and the main color of the ball that he balances on in the newer games. But he does have a slightly oranger shell and there are orange stars on his bouncy ball, so I can go orange for Lemmy and yellow for Iggy?

It makes sense to me.

I'm actually working on a thing, I may be able to show it in a bit.

I feel like this thread is turning into the reason why I hate the idea of Koopalings as alts. It's not even about Jr. being in Smash anymore, it's all about the Koopalings now. So many people are only here because of the Koopalings possible existence as swaps for Jr.. Not because they like Jr., who is the main character. People have even said that they hate Jr. and don't even care for him, but because his recolors are Koopalings, they'll use the character anyway. I don't hate the Koopalings or anything, but I just think their existence in Smash really takes away from Jr. making it in. Some aren't excited for him at all, they're excited for the Koopalings. I know that people are happy that the Koopalings are possibly playable, but it does make Jr. fans unhappy in some ways. We don't get any recolors, and if we want to play as any other color, we have to play as a Koopaling. I don't want to do that at all, and it's kinda unfair that other characters get alternate colors while Jr. doesn't. Another reason I dislike it is because after Mario Kart 8, where Jr. was not in, Koopalings took up 7/30 slots, nearly 1/4 of the roster. Their existence alone made other characters not playable, including Jr. and Diddy Kong. And now when Jr. finally makes in into Smash, the Koopalings once again cram themselves in there. And it's even more annoying now because some people are like "Jr. isn't the character really, it's the Koopa Clown Kart, the rider is just an accessory, so it doesn't matter who's in it." If it didn't matter, then people wouldn't be upset at the fact that the Koopalings are alts. Probably the most annoying thing to me though is the fact that people claim that Jr. wouldn't have even made it into Smash if the Koopalings weren't his alternate costumes. I'm sorry, but I fail to see the logic in that. That doesn't make any sense at all. Jr. is the main character, and the Junior Clown Car has been HIS thing for quite a while now. He is the ONLY person to use it, I'm sure if the Koopalings weren't alts, that he would've made it in anyway considering the whole moveset is based around things Jr. himself does. Koopalings haven't even used Clown Karts of their own, and New Super Mario Bros. 2 is where they all shared one big one, presumably Bowser's. I think Koopaling fans should be thanking Jr.'s existence for them being playable in Smash, not the other way around. I'm not mad or anything, don't get me wrong, just annoyed at the Koopalings. Other things bother me too, like from a gameplay perspective. No matter what they do, they have to do some really weird stuff to preserve gameplay. The Koopalings and their sizes/designs will present clear issues with hitbox/hurtboxes. I don't know how Sakurai will deal with that. And, this is probably easier to deal with, but will each Koopaling have the exact same taunts and vicory poses and announcer things. That's probably easy to deal with though. But it just bothers me that Sakurai said before that if characters are different enough in attributes, like weight and height and whatnot, then they're different charcters, like Marth and Lucina. Then he goes and crams the Koopalings into Jr.'s slot. I don't really like the idea of totally different characters as alternate costumes, personally. I really think that the Koopalings should be apart of Jr.'s Final Smash or an Assist Trophy. Jr.'s thing has been the Clown Kart and all of it's gadgets and gizmos for many games now, and now the Koopalings randomly gets to use them for no apparent reason when they haven't used it in any game...kinda takes away from Jr.'s identity.

I dunno, Jr. was my most wanted newcomer by far, and now with this whole Koopalings thing, it's kinda ruining the whole "Jr. finally made it into Smash!" feeling. I'm happy that he's playable and is a unique fighter, extremely happy, but the fact that the Koopalings are possibly there and essentially make Jr. interchangeable with no problems, makes me not so happy. I actually liked Lemmy, Larry, and Iggy, but now, I'm starting to kinda hate them. If Sakurai does do this whole thing, then I'm sure he did it to appeal to both groups of fans, and that's really nice of him. And I'm sure most will be happy, but as a fan myself of Jr., it just flat out bothers me more than anything.

tl;dr: Please no Koopalings. Takes away Bowser Jr.'s spotlight as the primary fighter.

They've used it before, yo. Again, if you don't like it, don't use it. Nobody's making you use the alternate costumes. But the people who like the Koopalings better than BJ get the option. There's literally nothing wrong with having more options rather than less.

You're a Bowser Jr. fan? How about being grateful that he's even playable at all? You're right, some people are here because of the Koopalings, and some people even hate Bowser Jr. Guess what? I've hated Bowser Jr. for years... but I don't care about the Koopalings. I put aside my issues with Jr. and found reasons to like him, because I want to get along with people and use every character in the game. Sure, I'll probably use the Koopalings more, but that doesn't take away Jr.'s spotlight.

I find it incredibly ironic that a Jr. fan is going to complain about the Koopalings taking Jr.'s spotlight, when Jr. took their spotlight for years. We hadn't seen them since Super Mario World. and they've even been retconned from being Bowser's children. If you really can't deal with the Koopalings like I was able to deal with Jr., then the best thing for you to do is just ignore them.

I can understand your frustration with the scenario being presented, but I will have to admit as someone who LOVES both Jr. and the Koopalings, I cannot grasp the unwanted feelings for the latter. To me I have to think of it like this: I am a HUGE Peach fan (my main for Melee and Brawl), but if she was to have an alt costume like Daisy or somehow Rosalina (if not revealed as playable), then I would not think any less of the original character, nor that they were taking anything away from Peach, nor would I harbor ill feelings towards the alt costumes. I would think that because of Peach, these other characters get some spotlight and we are getting a nice addition of variety to the game that would not have been included otherwise.

Like the addition of Jr., I feel he brings a unique moveset and gameplay to Smash that the Koopalings can benefit from.

I agree with you that it seems backwards to think that the Koopalings are the reason for Jr.'s inclusion. It is obviously Bowser Jr. who ushered them into this particular game, should they be proven playable alts.

I feel like, if this turns out to be the case with the Koopalings being alts., that they were lumped together because of their similarities in what they do in the games. Not moveset-wise per se, but Jr. and the Koopalings are Bowser's main infantry and chain of command beneath him. These are the guardians of castles and levels in Mario games. Likewise, going back to the Peach analogy, if they had Daisy and Rosalina as alt costumes for her I would assume it was because they are all princess-esque characters of the Mario universe, not because they should take away from Peach's inclusion.

I hope that makes you feel a bit better? Maybe? :ohwell:

I fail to see why so many people despise the Koopalings because they take away "everything" from Bowser Jr.

Will each Koopaling be featured on the official site with a newcomer banner? No. Only Bowser Jr.
Will each Koopaling have their own trailer where they are the main focus? No. Only Bowser Jr.
Will each Koopaling have their own character slot on the CSS? No. Only Bowser Jr.

I personally like Bowser Jr. more than the Koopalings, but if I ever need variety, they'll be a nice option. Kinda like how I switch between some of the Koopalings in Mario Kart 8, but mainly use Iggy/Larry. (Speaking of which, Nintendo gimme Diddy Kong and Bowser Jr. DLC for Mario Kary 8 now)

Also, people seem to forget this: Is it possible that a few fans of the Koopalings will grow to like Bowser Jr. more because of their added similarities? Yes, it is quite possible. I went from only liking Larry to liking the whole bunch (besides Wendy and Lemmy).

Even if that's the case, I don't see the problem. All Koopalings would be scaled so they have the same hitbox. Or not be scaled at all, the height difference between them (girth doesn't matter because the KCC's diameter would be the same for all) is not that big. It would just be unnoticeable in the middle of the battle.

It's possible.
I am not going to ask what the hell are those Bowsers doing in the back. O_O

Unnecessary response. The have a right to be disappointed with the Koopalings potentially being alts and are certainly not the only one. No one is on their "high horse". It's just the way they see it, you don't have to retaliate like that if you have a different opinion.

I respect your opinion, but while Bowser Jr. is featured on the site and has his own character slot on the CSS (we may not get a trailer for him), I have seen many responses to this thread only excited for the Koopalings. They couldn't care less about Bowser Jr. So in that sense, attention is being driven away from Bowser Jr. That's all we're getting at.

Unnecessary response. The have a right to be disappointed with the Koopalings potentially being alts and are certainly not the only one. No one is on their "high horse". It's just the way they see it, you don't have to retaliate like that if you have a different opinion.
I believe my response was perfectly justified. He's attacking the Koopalings and I'm trying to defend them.

Acting like Bowser Jr. is ruined by the Koopalings sharing a slot with him is being on your high horse. And I'll say it again, you have no right to complain about the Koopalings being alts if others don't have a right to complain about Bowser Jr.

Be grateful that Bowser Jr. is even playable at all.

Funny that any side should bring up "stealing spotlight."

Jr. stole spotlight in Mario Sunshine through New Super Mario Bros. Wii when the Koopalings decided to show their faces again. Even then, Jr. played a bigger role than any of them in NSMBWii.
Koopalings took spotlight back in New Super Mario Bros. 2.
Jr. continued to steal the spotlight in all of the spinoffs and Mario Galaxy 2.
Koopalings stole spotlight again in Mario Kart 8.

All eight of them have been stealing the spotlight from each other for the past decade. It's almost like they have some petty sibling rivalry. Fitting, isn't it?

Don't mind me; I'm just sitting in my own little corner loving the idea that I'll get to play as all eight of 'em. I hold all of them near and dear.

You really don't have to have a response attacking the person "attacking" a group of fictional characters.

I fail to see how that has to do with him being on his high horse. Also, no one said you don't have a right to complain about Bowser Jr. Although complaining about Bowser Jr on the Bowser Jr. support thread makes no sense.

I am grateful, but we're also allowed to have criticisms.

I didn't attack anyone. Again, I was defending the Koopalings.

I call it "being on your high horse" because there is no valid complaint, the Koopalings being alts is not a bad thing, it just makes you sound ridiculous to complain about it. You may as well be saying "Pink and blue Mario is stealing the spotlight from Mario!" or "Peach's Daisy alt ruins the character" or how about "No one is going to care about Samus, they only care about Dark Samus."

They're alt costumes, you don't have to use them, they aren't harming anything, it's acting like an entitled brat to complain.

Telling someone to get off their high horse...I don't know, I find that kind of uncalled for.

I'm just going to agree to disagree because this debate has no end. Everyone has their own opinion, whether you find it valid or not.

sibling rivalry? JR is the only kid of bowser, the Koopalings are only elite minions

It wasn't meant as an insult, so I'm sorry if you took it as one (despite it not being directed at you in the first place...)

An opinion is an opinion, I'm not telling you to change yours. But outright trying to discredit something and angrily ranting about how it shouldn't be there isn't an opinion, it's just throwing a fit. I agree that this will go nowhere, so I'm not continuing the matter.

Now... I need to go back to what I was doing before this got out of hand.

I'm glad we live in a world where telling someone to get off their high horse isn't an insult.

I just felt the need to stick up for them. Whether they were angrily ranting or not, it's just not a nice thing to say. And the post below me is only proving my point.

Alrighty, ignoring the overly sensitive bloke... and getting back on topic.

Still a work in progress, but this is the colour scheme I was thinking for the clown cars.

We haven't quite seen Bowser Jr.'s full movelist yet. We've seen his up tilt with the paintbrush, right? (Koopalings using a wand for this express purpose is fine too.)

I could see Bowser Jr. breathe fire while the Koopalings cast a spell with their respective projectiles, even if gameplay-wise they're all the same. Waving around their weapon of choice and then firing off a projectile attack of some sort fitting of them, I think, would fulfill the bare minimum of representing their presence outside of the clown car (yes, even without subtleties like Morton shaking the screen every time he lands from a jump and such).

In this respect I don't see any real issue with them being vaguely interchangeable. If it's all true, I'd say it's an honestly clever way to incorporate the Koopalings and Bowser Jr. together - and I'm someone who was around from the beginning of the NES days. I'm sure Sakurai will do all eight of them justice - he'd already be going above and beyond by including eight separate models to begin with, each likely with their own minor animation quirks unique to them in the process.

Even if there isn't much of that either... well, having all eight I'd say is an ambitious choice unto itself, so I welcome it. I'd probably give any one of them a spin depending on whimsy if I decide I like the base playstyle between them. (The Up+B helpless animation is especially amusing to me and worth the price of admission!)

Since he is the big guy of the bunch, here's Jr. himself alongside Papa Koopa! The Bowser sprite is by Neorice.

I'm pretty terrible at making sprites, but I hope this is good enough. Hopefully I'll actually finish the rest.

It looks like Bowser Jr. is flipping off the competition...I approve!

Whelp, I just kind of gave up after Ludwig.

Neorice will make far better sprites once the characters get revealed anyway...
