I used Shantae being a new female protagonist as a reason in a discussion, and someone just completely changed what I said.
Me:" Samus has been the only female character who stars in her own franchise since the debut of Smash Bros in 1999."
Them: "This isn't 1999 anymore. Smash has a lot of female characters."
Did everyone just forget what "protagonist" means?
I'm gonna break down what I'm talking about for you newcomers to the thread or guests who're on the edge of being a Shantae supporter (you know who you are), so listen up:
-Take the entire roster
-Break it down to all the characters who are the protagonist of their own franchise (Or at least 2+ games)

It's pretty sad to watch people claim that the gender imbalance is somehow completely fixed now. Here's what they're missing: Five of the females in the series are basically princesses (or come across as representing that archetype). And as for ZSS, her status as being a playable iteration of Samus in Metroid games is nearly nonexistent. (Which I'd actually like to see some kind of proper world-building for Metroid gameplay, and doing missions or exploring areas such as cities as Samus outside of her suit sounds like it could be an interesting idea. Of course, Metroid purists would hear nothing of it.)
Hm, as you brought up before, I think a Freedom Planet/Shantae crossover would be more hype.
Well, maybe "hype" is pushing it considering how much more popular SK is compared to FP, but still.

Easy there, there's nothing wrong with damsel-in-distresses and not everyone is tired of them. Now, no character should be added just to fix a "gender imbalance", but ofc it would definitely be nice to see not just females, but female leads. I'm a Shantae supporter, but I want to see her get in on her own merits, not just because she's female.

She does have her own qualities and good reasons to be in Smash (I can name plenty), but in a time where diversity in media matters, Shantae being a protagonist certainly plays a large part.
Nintendo have been promoting diversity themselves recently, with more focus on the Inkling Girl in Splatoon in advertisments and promotions, along with adding same-sex relationships to Fire Emblem: Fates.

That is true. Apart from Samus and her ZS counterpart, Smash has no other female protagonist in it's roster.
Kind of sad when you think about it. That is why Shantae NEEDS to be part of the DLC of the Smash Ballot. She is the only female protagonist that is on the top list of almost everyones wish list. I think?

I... wasn't speaking literally for "everyone". I'm referring to how one of the primary causes of people (vocal minorities or not; though hopefully the former) crying sexism at gaming is how there's almost always been a "Save the Princess" scenario and the hero is a man.
Nor am I or anyone saying Shantae being female is the sole and primary reason she should get in. It's only one of many factors.

Out of all the western characters being voted, Shantae would most likely recieve very little backlash from Japan if she got in Smash. (Unlike Little Mac, who got in, and Shovel Knight, who people want in)
Along with Pirate's Curse getting released in Japan, she's a character that'll be easily appealing to Japanese gamers, especially the "otaku" crowd.
