Stuck in the transporter room:

Name: Dark Dragoon
Main: Mewtwo. Seriously.
Secondaries: At this point, any secondary would automatically become his main.
Interesting fact: The only known person who plays Mewtwo not named Taj.
LOL WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?

>_> Also, Fun Fact: I've made more kills in my tournament matches with Mewtwo than I have with my Sheik, Marth, and Jiggs combined.

So yea, I'm just working on my Mewtwo at this point.
=[ I can combo now! I promise!

DX That's not sleepiness, that's having a headache!

Mewtwo dittos are Lulzy. I'll see what I can do about getting a match in with you. Too bad my Feb break is being spent on a cruise ship >_>...I'd rather be smashing and seeing Sandra to be perfectly honest.

Well guys, I always knew this day would come.

The Four Swords has always been more of a loose confederation of awesome people than an actual crew, but things have been slower than normal, even for us. Half of the original members are outside of the state, and their activity in the Smash community is negligible. The rest of us who are here have pretty much moved on to Street Fighter 4, so we haven't been too active either.

We started this crew in the hopes of being a national force someday. While we never reached that level, I'm proud of what we did accomplish: hosting tournaments and smashfests, bringing together cool people to play a cool game. If we've had no other impact on Smash than that, then I still feel like this crew was an amazing success.

We've had alot of fun over the years, and I hope that we've helped other people to have fun as well. Despite a few complaints, I felt that Don't Get Grabbed was the best tournament we've hosted, and I thank everyone who came out to support us. I think it's a good idea to go out on a high note.

So, with that, I officially decree that the Four Swords Crew is disbanded. I won't ask the mods to lock this thread; instead I'll leave it to take on a social aspect, or get purged, or whatever happens. I'm going to leave the OP the way it is as well, as a testament to this crew (also because I'm big nerd and I think it's hilarious).

I guess you win, Thumbs!

--------------------------------------
Now for some personal thoughts.

I started playing this game competitively back in 2005, and holy cow, that was four years ago. I feel like I've gotten so much better and had so much fun at tournaments and just with the people I've met. I owe everything I've been able to accomplish in Smash to JV Smooth. He taught me all the things worth knowing in this game, and without his guidance and friendship, I wouldn't even be part of the community, much less being one of the top 10 Smashers in CT at one point in my career.

But everyone I know that was around when I started playing is gone. JC, Nesskid, Lock, MallSanta, Milktea, Brookman, <3, Shminkledorf, Pipe, V, Nus, and the others that I'm forgetting...those were the people that brought me in and befriended me. Almost no one on that list has even been to a Smash tournament in the last year, and even those people who still play (Cort, JV, etc.) do so with far less frequency. Life catches up with you eventually, I suppose.

Despite that, Smash in CT is rebounding. We have several upcoming tournaments, new Melee PRs for the first time in almost two years and we'll soon have our first Brawl PRs. Likewise, across the country there have been large tournaments that seem to bode well for the future of Smash: CoT4, RoM, and Genesis in the summer. A part of me hopes that this renaissance will continue, but I doubt it will. Melee is an eight-year old game at this point, and Brawl has had fits and starts in it's year on the market. I get the feeling that people are playing more for "old time's sake" than to meet that next challenge or find that next tech. Don't get me wrong, I think that the Smash community has accomplished amazing things with a game that wasn't meant to be played in tournaments, but we exist in the shadow of the height of our popularity at this point.

Also, I guess those personal connections mean something after all. Even though there are opportunities for tournaments in the coming months, my work schedule precludes my attendance at them. But most damning of all is not that I can't go, but that I don't care that I can't go. I used to rearrange my work schedule and call friends to make arrangements for Smash tournaments. Now I just shrug when I see a tournament is taking place on a Saturday. The game will always appeal to me, but without those people that I "grew up" with, so to speak, it seems kind of hollow. I've met great new people in the meantime: Noodles, PoF, Mike$, Trademark, Mogwai, Silas, Turnip, Hazy and many more than I can list here. But Smash tournaments used to be like a family reunion, now I go in and I say, "Who's that?"

Last week, JV came over and we played Street Fighter 4. We didn't even think about playing Smash. My desire to play games competitively has not diminished. As some of you know, I'm extremely excited for the release of BlazBlue this summer. However, my desire to play Smash competitively has pretty much reached an all-time low. I haven't played Smash in weeks, because it plays like crap on the HDTV in my bedroom and I don't feel like moving the Wii to the living room. I used to wonder how someone could be a moderator on SWF and not play Smash; well, now I know how, because I'm one of them. At Don't Get Grabbed, I had more fun running the tournament than playing in it. I suppose that a class of organizers is necessary to sustain a tournament community, but I never thought it would be me.

As long as people still play Smash, then the same spirit that brought together this crew will bind all of us together. It sounds kind of corny, I admit, but the Smash community is held together by its people, not the game. It's important to remember that if Smash is going to get back to where it used to be.

I just read Jam's post fully and it made me really sad because I know exactly what he's talking about when he says, "family reunions." Luckily for me, I was able to adjust to meeting new people in place of reunions. When I met them, I befriended them and saw them again at the next tournament. I think if i had just played the better players (only focusing on trying to get good at Melee) and not the new people in CT, I'd be feeling exactly what you feel now Jam.

All I have to say is even though I love the newer scene in CT, the old CT will always be very dear to me. <3 the good old family reunions.

Well, looks like I'm back to hosting tournaments. Maybe it's time to revive the Four Swords?
