Took a game of Fatality with this character, but I didn't keep the same pressure up game 3. This character can be difficult to play well at tournaments, you have to have a really strong mindset. I need to adapt and get better & have a stronger mentality.

I just wish that Sakurai did more with Duck Hunt Duo... for starters, the dog has a duck riding on his back... the duck should be utilized as the dog's "wings" where the duo have multiple jumps like Pit does in addition to their duck jump recovery (that one needs to be cancelable). Plus the duck could do more than just one peck, how about multiple pecks like Banjo-Kazooie's Rat-a-tat Rap? Multiple pecks could help the duo rack up damage. This is what the duo needs - more moves that can rack up damage quickly so they can KO enemies at high percentages like they normally do.

Secondly, the duo has the sharpshooter from the fourth wall... that NES Zapper player needs to be better at aiming... the smashes should have all three shots hitting the opponents instead of pushing them away to the point the third shot barely hits the opponents.

Thirdly, the dog throws clay pigeons. I wish you had more control over the trajectory... kinda like Link's boomerang so the frisbee goes up or down or just straight if you wish... the rising clay just doesn't cut it... this way, the hunter can shoot at enemies almost anywhere.

Last, the dog summons wild gunmen. I wish the gunmen are three times more durable that they can take up to 15% damage instead of only 5%. I also wish that the dog can summon a second gunman immediately after the first gunman made a shot (you cannot summon a second gunman if the first gunman haven't made a shot yet). This way, I think the gunmen would be more useful as a shield / turret.

The can seems to be perfect as is (just needs to bounce higher like in the original game). It is very versatile unlike the other specials. I hope people who hack SSB4 into something like Project M can refine Duck Hunt and make them more efficient. But for now, I just need to improve my skills with the duo as is.

I think that DH's moveset is fine honestly. If they did most of the things that you're suggesting they do, he'd probably be broken lmao.

Btw hi guys! I'm not sure where I could post my tournament results as we don't have a tournament results thread, but I did get 9th out of 50 at a larger local tournament here (: http://smashboards.com/rankings/comfy-and-easy-to-wear-4-wii-u-singles.3553/event and I also got 2nd out of 12 teams teaming with a Greninja (I used Sheik a little more than DH in doubles, but I used them the same amount in singles). Greninja is a really fun teammate XD.

I downloaded the NES game today but I cannot play it... I left my Wiimotes at my boyfriend's house.

Also, found this on knowyourmeme... pretty funny.

Happy New Year Duck Hunt mains, we can mark 2014 as the year the Duck Hunt Duo entered the scene with an entirely new design, and 2015 as the year where Duck Hunt was titled the best character in Smash Bros. by every single person ever.

I was just reading that interview about Bowser Jr. almost not making it... in that interview, Sakurai said that he finalized the SSB4 roster on May 2012.

I feel like I lucked out on Sakurai's Twitter!!!

From the Sakurai-Interview "The reason why those 50 (-47) fighters are in the game"

Mii-Fighter
MS: This time customization was a factor, I thought that we had to take a step towards being able to create something to your own liking during development. Although, we were thinking a lot about whether people would be happy to see the Mii Fighter as their opponent. For example if "My mommy" would come up as an opponent, would that really become a heated battle...? As we thought about that, if the character were to look and come out nonchalantly like in Mii Plaza, this would have been a definite failure. In the end by having the head of the Mii and changing up the body as well as giving them proper moves we managed to bring it into existence.

The reason for the return of Dr. Mario
MS: Actually all "Model-change"-characters that we have now were originally just supposed to be color-configurations. Just like the Little Mac-wireframe or how Olimar and Alph are included, we planned to just make the look and maybe the voice a possible configuration. But, when talking about Dr. Mario, including his abilities he had a lot of individuality in Melee compared to Mario. Also there were fans that said things like "I'm a doctor!", or "A back-alley doctor!" when they chose the black color-config. When you have such fans and you just change the character-model and leave it at that and it becomes "The same as Mario", we thought people might get angry (laughs). That's why we forced ourselves and changed that. But, unlike we did in the past when we separately added abilities and monitored the results, this time we used the customization-system and entered the adjustment-process by starting with a "Mario that's a bit heavier, with added attack-power". Although even then it still took a lot of work. During the regular adjustment-process we have each fighter battle all others and try to grasp the "strong" and "weak" problem areas, but in this case we had Dr. Mario go against Mario and tried to adjust it so it would most likely result in a tie. We did the same for Marth and Lucina, as well as Pit and Black Pit.

The reason for Duck Hunt joining the battle
MS: You think Duck Hunt is a rather minor character, right?
ND: We...think so. (laughs)
Everybody: (laughs)
MS: Please try to have a look at the sales-numbers. It might be the most-sold shooting-game in the world. It might be because it came bundled with the NES outside of Japan, if you look at worldwide numbers you come up with a huge number. I thought to create a character based on that would be appropriate, so we included that character from the very beginning of the project.
ND: So it was a candidate all along for the whole Smash Bros.-franchise?
MS: No, that would be exaggerating...in past titles we had our hands full with the characters we included back then. Even if we had tried even harder back then we couldn't have included it. But this time it was fun to do "Duck Hunt" and its shooting-like presentation. Like having a third person intervening the action, being able to say "It's actually a trio" was fun. That's how we finalized it during development of the concept, saying "That's how we can make it work!".
Duck Hunt portion here too.

One thing I've noticed when playing against one of my friends is that he loathes Duck Hunt thanks to the projectiles and their options.
All the more reason to continue using as the primary main eh?

LOL that's exactly how I want to be as a player, I want to be so frustrating/annoying to play against.
That's right. Duck Hunt Dog is known to be very frustrating and annoying... therefore we, the DHD fans and mains, should inspire frustration and annoyance. :4duckhunt:

Whenever we play as DHD, we become the muses of trolling. :troll:

Mmmm... interesting... so Sakurai added DHD because it sold millions back in the NES years and because he liked the concept of a fourth wall shooter (wonder where he got the idea from? :awesome:)

After getting quite fustrated with my own bad habits, I took a break from doggy to learn a few other characters, and give myself a fresh perspective. I was getting very caught up in a campy, 90% projectile only phase.

In doing so, I finally settled on a secondary of Villager, and a bit of Kirby as well, since I am already familiar with him from PM.

Going back to doggy, I realized the best playstyle (that works for me) is a mostly aggro, just using projectiles for opening and covering options, as opposed to just spamming them.

Taking that break was really helpful, I quite suggest it. If you are getting annoyed at your control of doggy, just take a break from him for a while. I even learned a new character for harder MU's! It's an awesome feeling to come back "refreshed" and now it's starting to feel like Doggy is an extension of myself, rather than have to think really hard on when to can, how to move, and so on. Now to get to that point with Villy.

I was just reading this interview about why Sakurai included Villager and Wii Fit Trainer in SSB4... and Sakurai said that they didn't want to add "non-combatant-like characters" in Brawl... but then decided to include characters who never fought before in their own games in SSB4 just to see if they can do interesting things and express their individual traits.

I think this includes Duck Hunt as well... maybe Sakurai thought that it would be interesting to pair the dog with a duck so they would fight together like Banjo-Kazooie and include the NES Zapper player who would assist the duo by shooting from the fourth wall. Damn, it is almost like he knew what I had in mind.

Love that trophy... one of my favorite trophies in the game.

But I never saw that white duck before in the NES game.

I thought I'd show you guys the shirt I plan to be sporting at Paragon.

Though how I got the shirt is pretty interesting. My uncle, back in middle school, gave me a bunch of old clothes that he did not want/was too tall for to use. This was a couple years before the release of Brawl, though at the time, I didn't wear it too much, due to me being wider. I also dismissed it as just a cool shirt.

Fast forward to a couple days ago, going through my closet when I re-discovered the shirt. The amount of foreshadowing in my life for this shirt to be in my closet is astonishing.

I also did some research on the shirt, since it has a very high quality feel and various markings on it. I'm not sure how true this is, but apparently this is a limited edition shirt made by a designer named "Torrel". The shirt ran for $50 back in 2007, when it was released, and I think I only found a few on eBay. On the back, it also says "1 or 1000", but again, I have no way to know if it is true or not. This shirt also came with one that has the art for Donkey Kong 3, (the arcade one) which also says it is rare, and part of the same "1000". I don't doubt that these could actually be collector's items, since my uncle comes into a large amount of money in his profession. Though I do wonder why he gave them to me. Perhaps he knew how much I loved gaming, even from a young age.

Thanks Uncle.

Good luck to you. Let's hope you don't end up losing in grand finals because the smashes didn't connect properly.

I think that the trick is to not over-use smashes and abuse grabs. Opponents cannot block grabs like they can with projectiles.

I'm so bitter about Duck Hunt.

I didn't want him in the game (Because he's not a fighting character at all, or a repeat character from a bunch of games) but now I love playing as him because his move set is just so quirky.

Such a hard life.

Tournament went awesomely yesterday, placed 7th out of 42 peeps. I only used Duck Hunt in one match, but did pretty fine in the casuals beforehand and the match was on stream, and a ton of people were crowding around us watching it too. You can see it right here: http://www.twitch.tv/gamingzoneaz/b/609489761 Game starts at 3:52:00

I look forward to using Duck Hunt again next time.

I played in a tournament recently, got knocked in to the losers bracket in my first game against a Robin. I played through losers, only switching character once, where I went Kirby against a Little Mac while trying to get inhale gimps. I finally got knocked out in semis against a Bowser who took damage up to 200% without being KOed, the one true problem with the Bowser MU.

So how'd it go?
Lost a match due to dumb mistakes, only 1-2. Couple weeks prior I got 9th. I did learn some stuff though. I'm havin a real bad time with the Shiek matchup. I always get lots of compliments though because like, there's no Duck Hunt players. I'm considering a secondary for some of the gaps in my playstyle. Someone less common in our area. I was considering Palutena, Fox or DK, although DK seems like combo bait, so perhaps that is a bad idea.

Anything but Shieks, Sonics, Luigis or Diddys.

Edit: There was actually an intensely Nasty Aggressive Kirby. Wasn't sure what to do. I've never played a Kirby that didn't float float float, then Down B. Or the other kind that spams smash attacks.

Outside of the game itself, what do you guys do to prepare for games and what do you do during games to help you play?

What I've found during games that helps me is listening to this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPni755-Krg
I know it isn't hype at all, but that's the point, I've found it helps me block out all distractions so I can have a clear mind. This helps me concentrate on creating set ups and keeping an eye on my opponent's play style at the same time. I'm the type of player that usually gets incredibly angry during matches, and I've found it helps me a lot, especially with a character that needs so much thinking power and patience to play at a top level.

I've found playing Duck Hunt Duo almost like Chess, you've got your king who is the dog and duck, and three other pieces, the gunman, the disc and the can, each of them needing entirely different uses to be used effectively while using all of them together to control the stage and stop your opponent, that's why I found that video so useful in my matches. You have to keep an eye on so much while keeping a level head.

For before matches, that's where I find issues, I get worried about the match even when I'm playing For Glory, in fact I get more scared playing For Glory than I do in tourneys. So I'd like to see what you guys do.

On another note, Jtails released a competitive tutorial for Duck Hunt, check it out:
