I hope they have the normal Chibi Robo style of games for home consoles while testing different genres with portable systems, which they seem to be doing.
I don't think they'll be going back to the other versions of Chibi Robo. I think they are doing the game the way it is to make the game more appealing while keeping the same characters. I think the other games weren't successful enough to warrant their continued production.

I hope this isn't what happens since I love the feeling of exploring a house (wow never thought I'd say that) as a small little robot helping out the residents. Plus Jenny(I think thats her name, if it isn't well Girl in Frog Hat thing) was just so weird.

Obviously for us fans of the series, an original-style Chibo game is ideal. However a business is a business, and they need to try something different. They chose to retain their beloved character, thankfully. Perhaps with this game, awareness of the franchise will be raised, and they will become popular enough to go back to an original style Chibi Robo game.

Unfortunately, I don't see anything else. Remember that even Fire Emblem might have ended if Awakening didn't do well enough. Chibi Robo has never done well sales wise, and I wouldn't be surprised if this was to prevent him from getting the axe as well. I suspect Nintendo wanted to keep using the character because he cute.

Also, this may be a "relaunching" of sorts with the amiibo. Nintendo wouldn't go though the trouble of manufacturing these if they didn't think they would sell.

Tbh I think they'll sell more Chibi amiibo than copies of the game....

To me, it looks like they designed the new game with potential moveset-fodder on purpose. >w>

I don't think Chibi Robo is "popular" enough to win the ballot, but I've always been a fan of his. I'd love to see his inclusion.

I don't think they necessarily need to win the ballot in order to be added, it seems more like nominations. Like, we nominate these characters and sakurai chooses the ones he wants to add

I really hope Chibi-Robo is one of the Smash Ballot characters, together with Inkling, Popo (or Ice Climbers if it works) and a Rhythm Heaven rep. Chibi-Robo is just one of my most loved game series, together with Splatoon (currently), Rhythm Heaven and Super Smash Bros., so it would be perfect if he's been added. Plus, Zip Lash brings up a really good moveset, I think.

Here's the thing: DLC has to sell. I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I think they're going to prioritize popular candidates.

But the thing is that the winner of the ballot is not a guarantee, just cause Shovel Knight or Banjo win the ballot doesn't mean they are gonna be added to the game. Not to mention the fact that it doesn't matter what the character is, it will sell and they know that

Why are you bringing up Shovel Knight or Banjo, when there's tons of Nintendo characters who are ranking quite highly as well? Third-parties are extremely iffy, but first-parties have nothing in there way for getting in. Odds are, the top ranking first-parties would get in, while third-parties would be iffy depending on how much the license would cost and interacting with the dev's and everything, third-parties are a huge question, but first-parties?

Well the ballot runs through October, and if Nintendo ramps up hype for this game (and it looks like they're going to, it was the first thing mentioned in the Direct with a pretty sick intro and a wonderfully designed Amiibo!) Chibi just might do well in the ballot. Absolutely zero reason to count out Chibi. I think the new direction with the series is going to generate a lot of interest, especially with Chibi's new simonbelmont.exe abilities.

Okay, as sad as I am that the new Chibi Robo game is a sidescrolling platformer rather than the style that the Gamecube version was, I am almost totally assured that this is due to the fact that they want to make Chibi Robo playable in Smash 5. For whatever reason, this just screams that, to make him more mainstream, identifiable and give him new moves. Looks like he's Nintendo's Belmont, lol.

It's like how Sakurai helped make Punch Out Wii happen so that Little Mac would be more relevant and have a few extra moves for Smash 4. Same cat exactly

Smash 4 still isn't out of the realm of possibility, but yeah, it seems they're making him more marketable. The old style didn't sell, so they required change. I'm hoping that they're using this to give Chibi Robo some exposure, and then they return to the original style.

Yeah man, Mario has multiple game styles, so does Metroid and Pokemon. while Chibi Robo isn't big like those, I hope we can regain the old way at some point

Perhaps if this game does well, we could see a home console game. Obviously that's very wishful thinking, but a great reception of Chibi Metroidvania Robo could do wonders for the series.

The ballot is just there to gauge public opinion, it isn't a contest that can be 'won'. Frankly I think pretty much any DLC character would sell almost equally well. I wish they had thought of tying in DLC with new game releases, so you could get the Inkling for smash bros by buying Splatoon, Chibi robo by getting this game, etc.

I wonder how much work it takes to make a new character?

Lucas is taking two months to make, which is really just taking him from Brawl, making a new model, and then tweaking him.

Hmm; I wonder if that is the full team, or if they can work on more than one concurrently.

I would imagine that there are several teams that characters get passed around. Design teams, modeling teams, programming teams, balance teams, etc.. So yes, multiple characters are probably being worked on at the same time so workers aren't left wasting time.

Those are just the biggest 'never gonna happen yet still popular' characters I could think of, third party or not

The biggest thing would probably be rendering everything out for each animation (and that's if they are using the same rigging and animations they used in Brawl) and doing all the physics stuff.

You have to factor in that they're working on other things besides Lucas. (potentially other characters too) So it's not like all of this time has been spent on Lucas.

Plus Lucas was already in a presentable state back when he was revealed, so really it's taken more than two months to make him.

Tournament mode, character fixes, balancing, Miiverse stage, new DLC characters, other stages, etc.

Sakurai and his team got quite a bit on their plate if you're wondering about Lucas.

So I made a Chibi Robo moveset a while back, and I decided to put more detail into it just now. So here is my Chibi Robo moveset. I think Chibi Robo would be a good spacer with this moveset. Using its disjointed hitboxes, and range, to keep the opponent away. I think he would also be able to mix up his options frequently because of the way he attacks, but has hard to use KO options. So without further adieu, Chibi Robo's moveset! Let me know what you guys think.
Ground Attacks:
Neutral Attack-Swipes plug twice. This move can hit opponents overhead at the end of the first swipe, and the beginning of the first swipe. Has almost no ending lag. 4%, 5%
Dash Attack-Falls over. Has a bit of ending lag, but Chibi Robo is fully protected by a hitbox while this move is being used. Any attacks with higher priority than this attack will not be protected by this attack. 6%
Forward Tilt-Thrusts plug forward. This acts like Pit and Dark Pit’s forward tilt. 7%
Up Tilt-Thrusts plug overhead. This attack is extremely vertical. 8%
Down Tilt-Kicks down. This attack has a chance to trip opponents. 7%
Smashes:
Forward Smash-Thrusts plug forward. This attack is a multi-hit, but it has low reach. 1%,1%,2%,3%,11%(up to 18%)-2%,3%,3%,3%,13%(up to 24%)
Up Smash-Thrusts plug upward. This attack is also a multi-hit, and is extremely vertical. 1%,1%,2%,2%,10%(up to16%)-1%,3%,3%,3%,12%(up to 22%)
Down Smash-Spins, whirling its plug around. The hit box goes in front of Chibi Robo, then behind. Chibi Robo’s longest ranging smash attack, and can be used to edge guard. 14%-19%
Areals:
Neutral Areal-Spins its plug around its body twice. This attack hits in front of Chibi Robo first. 9%
Forward Aerial-Attacks with plug. This attack can hit opponents below Chibi Robo at the beginning, and above Chibi Robo at the end. It has a lot of horizontal range. 9%
Back Areal-Kicks backward. Acts like Mario’s Back Areal. 9%
Up Areal-Swipes plug overhead. This attack can also hit opponents behind Chibi Robo at the start, and in front of Chibi Robo at the end. 8%
Down Areal-Uses the Chibi-Blaster downward. This attack is a meteor smash if you hit with the blaster itself. The projectile can be used to stop opponents from juggling you. This attack also slows down your falling speed for a second. 12% (Blaster) 4% (projectile)
Grab & Throws:
Grab-Grab: Short grab
Pummel-Punches 1%
Forward Throw-Electrocutes the opponent with its plug. It has no knockback, but it stuns the opponent for combos. 6%
Back Throw-Throws backward, then whips the opponent with its plug. 8%
Up Throw- Puts the opponent in his head, then releases it. This has surprisingly good knockback. 10%
Down Throw-Throws to the ground. 5%
Floor and Edge:
Floor-Spins, swinging its legs. 5%
Edge-A boxing glove punches the opponent as Chibi Robo gets up. 9%
Specials & Final Smash:
Neutral Special-Whip Lash: Chibi Robo swings its plug over its head while charging the attack. When you release B, Chibi Robo will throw the plug at its opponent. At max charge, this attack stuns the opponent, and has KO power, at low charge, this is a good spacer. This move can also tether. 6%-15%
Custom 1-Static Lash: The attack is a multi-hit, but cannot be charged, and has no KO power. 1%,1%,1%,1%,3% (Up to 7%)
Custom 2-Zap Lash: The attack takes longer to start, but can stun opponents for combos, cannot be charged, and has no KO power. 5%
Side Special-Toothbrush: Chibi Robo cleans the floor; any opponents that step on the water produced by this have a 50% chance to slip with every step they take on the water. In the air, this attack is a straight up attack.
Custom 1-Acid Toothbrush: Water deals rapid damage to an opponent, but does not stay long. 1% per hit
Custom 2-Scrub: The move deals damage on the ground, but does not leave water on the floor. 5% per hit
Up Special-Chibi-Copter: Sends Chibi Robo upward, and you can make it go from side to side.
Custom 1-Bladed Copter: Chibi-Copter damages opponents, cannot go sideways. 1% per hit 3% (final hit)
Custom 2-Fire Copter: Chibi-Copter sends fire outward, and can move sideways better, but does not help much verticaly. 3% per hit.
Down Special-Mug: Protects Chibi Robo from damage until it breaks. Has a cool down when it breaks.
Custom 1-Explosive Mug: Mug explodes when broken. 15%
Custom 2-Steel Mug: The move protects Chibi Robo from all attacks except Final Smashes, but it has loads more ending lag.
Final Smash-Giga Robo: Giga Robo appears out of nowhere and attacks by stomping on the ground. You can control Giga Robo for a while. 10% per hit.
Taunts:
Up Taunt-Raises a flower out of its head.
Side Taunt-Strikes a pose.
Down Taunt-dances.
Other things that don't affect gameplay:
On-Screen Appearance-Appears out from the background
Cheer-Chibi-Robo!
Victory Fanfare-Remix of Chibi Robo’s theme song.
Winning Pose-Cleans the floor, Dances while Telly Vision watches, Waters a flower.
Loosing Pose-Charges, while looking at the winner.
Pallet Swaps-Gold, Black, Copper, Blue, Wood, Green Copper, Orange

I'm honestly kinda loving the idea of this guy in Smash Bros. Is there a support list? I want on it. :chuckle:
The idea of an extremely tiny robot beating up Bowser with a toothbrush is just hilarious and needs to happen. :awesome:

I've only voted for one character in the ballot so far, but if Isaac gets in before the ballot ends I'll probably throw in a vote for Chibi Robo then. Out of the other 4 characters in my top 5 I feel like he could use it the most (and might have the most to gain from ballot votes)

Chibi Robo got 7th in want, wow.

I see him as the third most likely new franchise character to get in, after Inklings and a RH rep. I see him as rather likely in fact.

OK, I'm seeing this too much and its not true. Nintendo is not making Zap lash to add Chibi Robo to Smash. Their business decisions do not revolve around Smash, despite what some here like to think. Its far more likely they are trying to reestablish the brand. This is why Nintendo did the Micro direct the way they did, and considered Chibi Robo their main announcement. Its to save the brand, not put it in Smash.

I totally disagree with this. I feel like that's exactly why it is a thing, same with Punch Out Wii

I mean if people want to believe that Zip Lash exists to make Chibi Smash viable, let 'em think it, It's not the case. Clearly the company that makes Chibi Robo loves him. If they didn't, they would've stopped after the first game because it didn't sell well at all. The sole purpose behind Zip Lash is to save their beloved character by placing him in a more marketable game. Most people would rather play a fast-pace platformer than clean a virtual house, just saying. (I love cleaning that house though, don't get me wrong)
