Charles Manson commanded no army and led no nation. We're probably going in circles at this point, but I was just wondering, are there any acts of violence or war that you would consider to be rational?

One's that have thorough planning, are for logical reasons, have a higher chance of success than failure/wont completely fall apart if one thing goes wrong, and is used as a last resort only.

You might think people who decide to blow up first, speak later, or who try to do something that has a higher chance of them getting caught and butt ***** in prison everyday for the rest of their lives than success (and if they succeed they die), or who thinks innocent people should die because they don't agree with them are perfectly rational. But I think it's stupid.

Heck if I thought Harry Potter was telling me to nuke America I'm pretty sure I could find more people who would be thinking the same thing as me. We could put our plans into motion (especially if we lived in a country where we could probably drive around with AK-47's poking out the sunroof and nobody would care much) and make perfectly "rational" decisions and then set or plans into motion. But if we were really thinking rationally we would see how utterly riduculous the whole thing is.

Pluvia, I think the issue is your definition of "rational". I think you're mixing it up with the definitions of "smart" and "prudent".

A rationally made decision isn't necessarily a good, smart, or practical decision. They're not the same thing. A rational decision can be smart or good, but it doesn't have to be.

The idea of being "rational" means you are capable of making a decision, whether you have good judgment or not.

Think insanity plea in courtrooms. You and I may think that a murderer has done an awful, stupid thing. In fact, he has done an awful, stupid thing. But unless he is mentally ill (ie, "insane") he made a rational decision to murder. Somebody who is mentally ill, on the other hand, can plead insanity; somebody who does this is usually not capable of making a decision because they are physically not in their right mind. That's the difference between rational and irrational.

Just like how thinking commiting suicide to kill lots of people is a good idea makes you physically not in your right mind.
