Who is Terra?
Terra (or Tina, in Japan) is considered the main character of Final Fantasy VI. Though this is somewhat debated, the plot revolves heavily around her, and her theme is the main theme of the game. She's the daughter of an Esper and a woman, so she has a human form, but she can morph into an Esper.

*Terra's character design. She was changed a bit when her sprites were done, notably her blonde hair from the concept art was made green for the sprites.

Why Terra?
Terra represents the golden era of Final Fantasy, the games released on the SNES, and her game is often ranked among the best. She just had her game ported to GBA too, and with FFIII and FFIV recently remade for the DS, IMO it's a no brainer FFVI has a chance to be remade too.

How she appears in-game. Her appearance should be a mix of her sprite and her concept art. Or even just her concept art or sprite.

Is she likely?
I'd certainly say she has a shot, but I have to say no. I'd rank her as "possible". Moving on...

What about her moveset?
Terra learns Magic. She's also able to equip Swords and Armor. She's sort of like a Magic Swordsman (eh... Mage Knight). A player can choose to make her more of a Mage or more of a Knight, or to settle somewhere in the middle. If she were to make it to Brawl, I'd like her to be in the middle too, using Magic for her Specials, and using a Sword and a combination of Magic infused attacks for her standard moves (a la Zelda or Lucas).

Some Special moves that come to mind:
Fire Spells:
She learns all sorts of fire spells. Would work as a projetile, or she could cast it in front of her. The enemy could be briefly engulfed when attacked. You could even be able to charge it. If it's done chargeable they could even work Meltdown (full name, in-game its Merton) as an "overcharge". (Meltdown would damage her too)

Desperation Attack (Riot Blade):
Would be hard to work into. She could randomly do this move as a standard attack at high percentages, (relative to the percentage of her opponent maybe? As in, if Terra has 300% and her opponent has 23% she has a better chance than when her opponent has 300% as well... but it would be hard to implement in Free for alls, unless they make an average or cumulative...) It could also be a special attack, weak at low percentages, and strong at high ones. But, I don't like that idea so much.

Break, Quarter, Pearl and Drain:
Terra learns these Spells naturally. However, some of them wouldn't work exactly well (Well, without being broken) in the world of Smash, so one or two of them could be chosen and worked into a special.

Life/Warp:
Both possible recoveries, but worked around from the game. Warp is used to exit dungeons and battles, but it could be like one of many teleport like moves in Smash. Life is a spell that revives a fallen party member. How would it work? When used, the angel that appears when Life is used comes and gives Terra a ride.

Morph:
Terra could Morph as one of her Specials, and have a Stamina meter like the Pokemon Trainer, so she can only morph during a limited time, and that time is recharged as Terra... or she could morph for a limited time as her Final Smash too.

Ultima:
Ultima is very easily Final Smash material, if they don't choose to go with an Esper Final Smash.

Morph and Ultima:
Well, you could combine this as a Final Smash, where Terra Morphs, and she has a limited "Magic Bar". This bar gradually depletes, and when it's empty she Morphs back. Ultima replaces one of her Specials. Casting Ultima will fully deplete the bar, but the more Magic you have stored the stronger Ultima is. I don't like this idea so much, a bit too complex. But it's here for suggestions sake.

Other Magic:
OK, so I gave you some of the Magic Terra learns naturally, but I also thought it was worth mentioning that she can learn virtually any spell in the game. If Terra's array of natural magic is not enough for a workable moveset, (Though I think it's even more than enough) she still has all the potential for spells learned through Magicite.

Summons:
Terra could also have a summon for a Final Smash. They could give her like 3-5 summons and she would do one at random for her Final Smash. Or they could just keep it simple and give her one summon. I'd choose Maduin, since that's her father, but I guess they can choose any in the game.

Her Esper form

Her Esper form. It should certainly be incorporated into her moveset. A transformation that can only be used for a certain time is an option, but it'd be hard to keep players from abusing it. They could make it a *VERY* limited time, so players only choose to Morph for the K.O. Because, When she's an Esper her stats double. This, in Smash would be hard to balance. Her stats don't neccessarily have to double, but she'd certainly be more powerful than normal.

So, if it's a transformation, it should be very limited time-wise.. as in, she can only transform for a very brief moment.

It could also be a Final Smash, compared to the likes of Wario Man and Giga Bowser. But, I just like the idea of her FS being Ultima so much...

:D Paint FTW(FTL). It's not fancy though... but whatever.

The supporting cast! (Bosses and ATs)
If Terra is in the game, we could definitely see other Final Fantasy characters in the SSE. Wether from VI or from other FF universes. (Allies and enemies) But... this is a point in favor of all FF characters, I guess. Anyway, here are a few of the more interesting choices:

-Kefka
-Locke
-Celes
-Moogles
-Summons
-Empire Soldiers

Terra in a FMV: (Spoilers, FFVI Ending)
Thanks Devastilan!!

To recap:
She's just awesome. *sigh*

I actually think he means Celes, as she did jump off that cliff if you let Cid dies. Though she doesn't die so it wasn't actually suicide. Speaking of Celes, Terra should so have an alt of her if she got in.

As for Terra, she was always one of my favourite characters from FFVI, so I'd love it if she got in. Unfortunately even if an FF character is considered, I think she'll be out prioritized by others.

She's not a WTF Square character, FF6 is regarded as one of the best games ever, has been re-released plenty. It's not some obscure cult classic...

EDIT:

Celes, could be. She'd should definitely be considered as a Terra alt though, even if it'd be weird seeing Celes using Fire magic. I mean, she can, but I'd rather see her use Ice Magic, but seeing her Morph into a green esper would be cool... we've could have weirder alternate costumes.

Then why didn't you do it when you first thought of it?
Well, at least you made a decent opening post, so it's not as bad as some character threads. And Final Fantasy characters are never too bad, but I don't really see any character from the franchise getting in Brawl. IF one makes it, it'll probably be a more iconic character for the series.

I had a moveset for Terra somewhere around here. Let me see if I can find it...

EDIT:

I must admit, the idea of having Terra in Brawl would be an awesome proposition. She does use swords, but is also a skilled magic user, so I can see all sorts of magical sword smashes.

B: Fire - Terra stands still for a moment, and unleashes a wave of fire along the ground. The move has a minimum charge time, but holding B charges it further, and increases the range of the move (but not the damage). The fire deals 5% and drags an enemy along - if fully charged, it can deal up to 4x5%.

Side B: Drain - This attack has about a 1 second lag. When used, it creates a circle around Terra (about the size of Master Hand) - if any enemies are within the circle, they take 5% damage, and Terra is healed by 2% x number of enemies in the circle. Not so useful in multiplayer, but potentially great in Subspace when surrounded by enemies.

Down B: Dispel - Terra charges, and becomes immobile for 3 seconds. She gains super armor in this state, and any direct attacks will stun the attacker for a few seconds (but no damage). Projectiles deal half damage with no knockback, and items like Freezies and the Lip's Stick don't freeze/drain damage.

Up B: Warp - Basically the same as Zelda's Farore's Wind, but with a bit more charge time and less range. When Terra comes out of the warp, she swings her sword (does 10% damage), damaging any potential edgeguarders.

Final Smash: Morph - Terra morphs into her Esper form, a purple-white being engulfed in flames. Her sword is replaced by an energy weapon which deals 1% more damage for every 5% damage the attack originally dealt (ie. if her Fsmash dealt 23% while normal, it would deal 28% when morphed), and her magic can be used without having to charge first. She doesn't have a limited timeframe to use this - rather, once she has dealt over 125% damage, she transforms back into her normal form.

Now, let me expand on that.

(out of 5)
Weight: *** 1/2 - about the same weight as Link. It doesn't look like it, but she can wear heavy armor, which would make her a bit harder to knock off than Peach or Zelda. She does fall faster than either of the aforementioned characters.
Run Speed: *** - I'd imagine she's naturally fast, but the armor weighs her down, so her running speed would be comparable to Mario's.
Attack Speed: *** - She's a balanced swordfighter, with some fairly quick attacks for racking up damage combined with more powerful hits. She tends to focus on the former though.
Recovery: ** - Her first jump is decent, but her second is fairly low. Her UpB isn't too shabby though.
Range: **** - She wields an enchanted sword with decent melee range, and her specials travel pretty far.

A, A, A - Punch (3%), kick (4%), sword thrust (5%). Basic combo, the sword thrust is a bit slow though.
Ftilt - Twirls around once with her sword outstretched (8%). The sword leaves a fiery trail that can deal some additional damage. (2%)
Dash attack - Sticks her sword in the ground while running, and somersaults into the air, landing on her feet with sword in hand. If hit with the initial sword thrust, deals 13% with high knockback; if hit while she's somersaulting, deals 8% with lower knockback.
Fsmash - She jumps forward while slashing (identical to her basic attack in FF6). Deals 23% damage, again leaves a fiery trail behind her (4%), there's a bit of lag after she lands though.
Dtilt - While crouched, points her hand at the ground and creates a small fire (like Mewtwo's Dsmash). 3x4% damage (the attack can hit up to 3 times), though it leave her pretty vulnerable.
Dsmash - Thrusts her sword into the ground and creates 2 pillars of fire on either side of her. The tops of the pillars deal 20% with high vertical knockback, the sides deal up to 4x6% damage with little knockback. The pillars don't block projectiles, and last for about 1.5 seconds.
Utilt - An arcing sword swipe (11%) with a fiery trail (3%).
Usmash - Quickly jabs her sword in the air. Identical to Roy's Usmash, without the sweetspot in the middle of the sword.
Nair - Sex kick (starts at 13%).
Fair - Jabs her sword forward and spins it around rapidly. (up to 9x2% damage)
Bair - Double kick backwards (first kick does 10%, second does 7%)
Dair - Points downward, and creates a fireball beneath her. Lasts for just over a second, can deal up to 10x4% (think of it as similar to Yoshi's dair without as much horizontal range)
Uair - Jabs her sword upwards, then swings it downwards. Jab does 8%, swing deals 6%.

Grab - Grabs with her free hand.
Grab attack - Smacks opponent with the side of her sword (3%)
Fthrow - Holds her sword back for a second, then swings it and twirls around once. 9%
Bthrow - Throws them backwards, then creates a small fireball to throw at them (like Mewtwo's Fthrow, but only one). Throw does 3%, fireball does 8%.
Dthrow - Drops her opponent, then skewers her sword through them. Deals 7% with little knockback - great chainthrowing move against heavier foes
Uthrow - Throws them in the air, points at them, and creates a small explosion that sends them flying diagonally. 13% damage

Specials and FS - as described in the quote

I do like the idea of Terra on Brawl. Maybe she deserves to be more on the game as her game comes from a Nintendo console unlike the most popular non generic FF choices.

Best Final Fantasy ever. Cloud, Sephiroth, and all those FF fangirl bishie's could only hope to star in a game as awesome as FF VI (AKA FF III, I still have it on the SNES >:3)

Or
FF6 is my favorite FF, and Terra is probably my favorite protagonist of the series... hmm. She doesn't stand a chance, but I'm sure you know that and are just having fun, so that's cool. It's a pity that she never became as emblematic of the series as the FF7 or FF1 characters did... I'd love to see her redone in 3D.

Nice movesets, too. There definitely are lots of possibilities for the gal. I wouldn't mind seeing Shadow and his dog or Sabin or Edgar or... Mog in, hah.

It would be awesome if they remade her game for the DS Wii, the Final Fantasy VI tech demo they had once used point and click functionality, so I recall... and you could draw shapes to do summons... of course that could also work for DS, but it would rock to have FFVI in mah Wii. *gets starry eyes*

And yeah, as I said, I know she's not likely, but *sigh*

EDIT: And before any smart mouths say it, when I say FFVI in my Wii, I don't mean a VC title. But.. I would buy it. Again.

I fully support Terra being in Brawl. Will she? Probably not. But I still would like her.

Cecil would be an awesome choice too. Final Fantasy did a lot for Nintendo during the SNES era, so a character from that franchise wouldn't feel so out of place to me.

And thanks for that ending :) Though I've seen it before, it's nice to have it on the thread.

We already had a thread like this, I think, but, oh well. Can't have enough Terra threads. She's one of those characters whose inclusion as a playable character would let me forgive all of Sakurai's violations of good design.

I'll go ahead and quote an ancient moveset I made for her:

Terra Branford
( pretty picture I found on DA, not directly depicted out of respect for the artist )

Terra is pretty much what the FF6 plot revolves around. While there are many main characters, she got the ball rolling. Heck, the main theme, which is one of the most memorable leitmotifs ever, is named after her. She's one of the most useful characters and one with some of the most personality, she's important, and in the end, who could not love a green-haired girl with memory loss who wants to know what love is? People who eat puppies, that's who! ( No offense to the Chinese. )

Anyway, she would probably seem too much like Zelda at first, but I don't think so.
In my eyes, she's somewhere between Zelda and Young Link:
Relatively fast, with okay jumping, overall nice but not outstanding tilts and aerials but lacking actual killer moves, but also possessing a bunch of tricks up her sleeve.

Weight: Mario-ish, not a lightweight because she can actually equip some heavy armor
Fallspeed: ranging from medium to rather fast when fastfalling, allowing for mindgamesy business
Speed: slightly above average on the ground, about the same in the air

B: Fire
Not extremely original, but sensible: In FF6, there's Fire 1, 2 and 3, plus there's Merton, which deals extreme fire damage to everyone on the battlefield, and she learns these naturally.
It's a projectile that can be loaded up for a pretty long time, about as long as PK Flash. When released, it thrusts forward for a not-so-great distance and goes poof when it hits someone, dealing damage relative to the time spent charging and popping the enemy up, on fire. The size of the combustion also depends on this, and can damage Terra from a certain point on.
Uncharged, it is comparatively fast and can be used like YLink's boomerang at close range for combo starting.

>B: Demi
After about a second or less of start-up time, Terra makes a black, flickering orb without substance appear in front of her. Whoever gets inside this sucker while it's out gets to say hello to gravity. Yes, sir, it's a spike!

vB: Pearl
Coming out about as quickly as Zelda's B, the holy energy of Pearl protects Terra with a shining sphere briefly appearing around her, dealing a little damage and set knockback to get her out of danger or the victims off the edge.

^B: Float
I'm so proud of this one.
Float allows Terra to... float! The longer one presses B, the higher she rises until she either reaches the max ( which admittedly isn't all that high ) or B is released. Doesn't sound good, but after she's done, for 3 seconds, Terra gets to move horizontally in the air as if walking on solid floor. This way, she may use any of her moves to try to get back onto the edge, except jumping, since that cancels the float.
Once the 3 seconds wear off, Terra immediately goes into helpless tumbling state like all others.

Her A attacks are basically Young Link-ish and Pit-ish, since the girl knows how to use a sword ( her range still isn't great ). She lacks good knockback on any attack, so she's reliant on edgeguarding ( which she obviously has nice options for ) or getting her opponents to about 140% to be able to knock them off far enough, which she also has not too many problems with due to her good defensive game and alright combos.

Super Smash? Either:

Morph: She turns into her lovely alter ego and goes berserk with shiny magic and stuff! Like, for example,
Ultima: Most powerful normal spell. Basically lots and lots of light and boomies.
Riot Blade: Her Desperation Attack in the game, she uses her weapon to throw magic slices at her enemies or something like that.

FIN

Vote Terra.

this is probably one of my favorite games ever played...
I would love Terra to get a shot, but this game really has potential for some good ATs.
Setzer using slot, Locke using Mug, Celes using Rune...
any number of summons or espers...It brings a tear to my eye

hell no chibi style terra =fail she should apear like the CG movies that came on the PS port
No, I don't want her Chibi-ized... see, I just posted that cause I saw it as a clearer way to see what her sprite is all about. I'd like it to be closer to the concept art, but I want the green hair.

However, in the unlikely event that she does make it in, any model would please me.
