Okay. My idea is basically a 2D fighting game that stars monsters/myths/crytpids from all around to world.

Some of the characters would include.

Medusa
Yuki-Onna
Valkyrie
Succubus
Wolfman
El Chupacabra
Moth Man
Ostrich
Robot
Minotaur
Dragon
Vampire
Golem
Mongolian Death Worm

I don't have an exact idea for some of the characters but I do have some ideas.

I'll go over a few of them.

Medusa: She's mellowed out quite a bit. She wears a bandanna over her snake hair to cover them and sunglasses to prevent people from turning into stone. The snake would have turned mellow as well, helping her while gaining sentience of their own. I'm not sure what her exact fighting style would be but the obvious super of turning the opponent to stone is there.

Succubus: A young succubus trying her darndest to keep her virginity before her wedding day. She's Jewish. :p I don't know what fighting style she could have but I imagine bat winds would be a major factor. I suppose one could call her a parody of Morrigan.

Moth Man: A half man, half moth thing from the States. He's actually a normal person who was experimented on by aliens. He could have a status inflicting powder move and use his wings to fly around.

Valkyrie: A male Valkyrie. He was somehow born that way to the other Valkyrie's fascination. He could have kind of a rock star attitude and would focus of zipping around everywhere.

Ostrich: I know. You're going WTF. But I thought a good joke character would be an ostrich.

WITH CYBERNETIC ENHANCEMENTS!

I also got a neat stage idea. The Loch Ness Monster and the Kraken could be fighting in the background, but the fight is interrupted by the appearance of the Leviathan.

Just ideas... Not sure if they're good.
Had to look up the worm, yuki-onna, and moth man.

Neat.

The idea sounds fun. I would probably play it. :p

The question is who the main character is. I feel like bigfoot seems cliche enough to work.

Certainly "basic" enough to be the "simple" character every fighting game has.

EDIT this is why you read every post.

Also you can never ever have enough greek mythology

I was thinking Medusa honestly. But I'm not sure how to have a coherent plot.

I'm going to assume regular humans are running around.

Asuming the "super important object everyone wants" is too cliche. . . Some kind of rivalry between the monsters?

Some who want to be more public and sime who want to hide. Then arguments become fights. Everyone has their own reasons to fight and some get caught in the middle without fighting at all. Maybe some worry about getting killed (medusa has been slain after all) while some are tired of the shadows.

. . .and now after writing this i realize this is pretty much the x men plot with a few touches here and there

One idea that I've yet to see fully fledged out is the Bunyip - a creature told in the Australian Dreamtime stories. That'd be something unique, and we get a real Australian demon fighting out there for the sun baked land!

Hmmm, you know, this reminds me a lot of War of the Monsters on ps2 now that I think about it.

Some, right? *looks at list* It's pretty good, but a bit lacking in surprises, besides the Ostrich and Death Worm.
How about this for your vampire?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baobhan_sith
Basically a female Scottish fairy vampire. They love to dance and apparently don't like horses.
Also, maybe one legend from the Hindu, as the Hindu have alot of cool creatures, like the Asura, Garuda and Rakshasa. They also have the Vanara, although the descriptions I found of them portray them similarly to Sun Wukong. Also, a Griffon or Sphinx to be an opposite to the Dragon. I always saw those 2 as capable counterparts to dragons. Also, a Dullahan. We need an Irish monster and our headless horseman.
That being said, if you're looking for ideas on monsters...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_legendary_creatures
That has a whole list of them. Heck, you might find some ideas for your current monsters, cause there's a whole lot of variations as well.

I kind of imagine the Ostrich being made by an evil organization as some kind of weapon. (They needed an animal dumb enough to control but strong and fast enough to be deadly.

Perhaps they're actively seeking out monsters to use them for parts?

Also thought of him but couldn't think of a good moveset.
Little Mac but with kicks. :troll:

Also, for suggestions:

Anubis
Jiangshi
Santa Claus
Nessie as Ridley
Aliens
Rougarou
Merfolk of the classic murdery lore
Phoenix
A fairy
Demons
Chimera
Wraiths

Maybe some internet monster like the Slender Man, does anyone actually own him? There was that one game...

I wasn't sure how to incorporate it story wise as it's pretty evil.

Definitely thought of it.

Also thought of him but couldn't think of a good moveset.

I thought of a banshee/siren hybrid.

Dullahan is interesting though.

I'm dumb.
Could be a big bruiser type character, basically the heavy hitter of the game. Could involve nature-based attacks since he's always found in the forest, maybe even involve his hair and a camera somehow because of how he's always caught on camera.

Now there's an idea.

Now to work on individual character motivations...

I want a lot of them to be friendly or simply bestial but I'm not sure who would be the villains.

I like the idea you're going for and I think it has potential. I do have a few things that maybe you could consider but I need some time to type it out. But I did at least want to say it's a good idea concept wise.

I don't know. Honestly I think it'd work a bit more as a world of ham. Maybe it's just I've listening to too much music, but I get a big metal vibe from it.

Like when you see artists like Dio or Blind Guardian, it's always these big grand tales with enough ham and cheese to make a Christmas dinner jealous. And that kind of style I think would work wonders with it.

In other words, a hammier Skyrim taking place in modern times.

But once again that's just how I perceive it.

Well being villanous is easy for monster like characters. . .but that can make them more interesting when they are good.

Worm sounds like a pure beastial character.

The yokai immediately made me think of one of those characters who you would expect to be nice but secretely ridiculously evil and sadisric.
Pretty much eliza from skullgirls (an entertainer who works with charity but is pretty much an ancient god slayer who feeds on blood and craves power)

Moth man sounds like the generic evil guy. Maybe not a leader. . .elite lackey maybe

Valkyrie sounds exactly like beowulf (again skillgirls) so he has to be a hero fighting for the sake of "justice" but screws up his fair share of times

I have no idea why but i imagine the vampire and el chupacabra as rivaling bounty hunters. . .

Maybe the dragon and golem are really old leaders from another era. Maybe not cranky king old (as hillarious as it is) but not exactly spring chickens running around starting fights with everyone they meet but still have a strong sense towards protecting the monsters

Pretty much just started spitballing. Im not even sure if these fit the mythos. Just kind of let my brain spit out anything it wanted. . . Regardless of missing logic

Obviously, the main villain is the feared banana tree spirit of China. Though aliens would also explain everything.

That being said, I'm surprised I forgot about the Nephilim, Cambion and Dhampir as possible creatures, as those sound like interesting choices. Also, the Bogeyman.

So, here's what I was thinking of:

Well, if you're needing a story, I would say one thing to consider is that reality shouldn't be the biggest factor here. One thing I love about fiction is that you yourself can create what happens and what doesn't. Maybe instead of limiting to "what would make sense", experiment. Maybe the creatures existed with us, or perhaps they were made by some government, or maybe they were created by gods to replace human beings and this is their way of finding the superior being.

The villain as well isn't that hard when you think about it. They are plenty of "evil" creatures to pick from. Hellhounds, devils of all kinds, the Grim Reaper, maybe Satan himself.

Also, with characters, I would say a dragon should be somewhere (maybe as a boss character), or perhaps an elf as ridiculously average character like Stahl.

One idea I've thrown around in my own head myself is a Kitsune-like character. Who would have a gimmick revolving around tails: with the more they have, the better their attacks are.

Once again though, it's just what I think could work.

Well he's a normal dude who was turned against his will. I kind of want him to be good.

Valkyrie sounds exactly like beowulf (again skillgirls) so he has to be a hero
Yup.

Chupacabra?

Really?

How?

Maybe the dragon and golem are really old leaders from another era. Maybe not cranky king old (as hillarious as it is) but not exactly spring chickens running around starting fights with everyone they meet
Hm... I want both to be good.

Would old rivals or old friends work better?

The Golem is from Hebrew legend. Maybe it could be a Chinese Dragon.

Pretty much just started spitballing. Im not even sure if these fit the mythos. Just kind of rolled with it
Hey I like it. I've been working on some myself.

Medusa would be good and fighting for peace to help with her hiding. She could make friends at the end.

Succubus would be good and could be marrying someone in the organization who has no idea what's really going on. Hubby could quit at the end.

Wolfman could be a villain.

Ostrich is mind controlled but a bad guy.

I kind of want the robot to be from the future. Sent back in time to stop the organization

Dunno about the Minotaur.

I would say a dragon should be somewhere (maybe as a boss character)
There is a dragon though.

So swamp told me of his monsters idea in another thread, I decided to drop in and take a look.

The idea certainly has a lot of potential. Folk monsters and animals are great. Also, no one seems to be suggesting a werewolf. I thought that was an obvious inclusion. :p

Now there's an idea.

Why not look them up? A lot of those characters are villains in their respective cultures. Medusa and the Mongolian worm seems to be of the chaotic evil kind. I'd put vampires are Neutral evil.

Draw up the morality chart.

I can see the bunyip possessing a feral nature, but maybe have some shred of nobility and respect for the land. Let's say if the organisation 'CHIMERA' is indeed taking body parts from animals - then they'll be searching for various animals across the world, including Australia. Seeing their land destroyed, the Bunyip emerges from the billabong it lived in to seek vengeance on the people destroying the land.

I can see maybe an attack based on the boomerang, such as throwing a detachable claw and it comes back to him. Some myths say that the bunyip kills by dragging their victims into the billabong, so a grappling style wouldn't be farfetched.

I actually like the sound of the Grim Reaper as a possible final boss. Heck, the Grim Reaper as the final boss sounds really good with that last suggestion for the story. The idea of the Grim Reaper being around watching the monsters fight to the death and taking the fallen's souls while watching the victors proceed and when the last monster is standing, the reaper is ready to kill off humanity to make way for the new beings, only to be foiled by the last monster. That sounds like it has potential.

Umm, cause a Wolfman has already been suggested?

Adding him.

I thought of an idea for Ostrich though.

He could have powers of the Phoenix and Thunderbird giving evidence that Chimera has had success in getting some creatures.

The vampire could be an explorer. He's been alive so long, he decided to explore the world to cure his boredom. I imagine him being a practical vampire, whose not afraid to use guns or other weapons to compliment his physical prowess.

So today was my birthday, and looking back, it was quite a good day!

I got a variety of gifts, which I listed over at the Smash Social Thread. But of course, it's not always about the gifts. It's about spending time with family and friends, and playing video games as well, especially when you play games that actually do something to commemorate your birthday.

One such video game that I really like for the birthday commemoration are the 6th generation Pokemon games. For those that haven't played X/Y/OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire on the day of your birthday, I left a spoilers tag in case you haven't experienced it yet (seriously though, you should try it out at some point; something really great happens).
So you know when you enter the Pokemon Center on your birthday, the lights start out dim, and then they suddenly brighten up as Pikachu confetti falls from the sky, then Nurse Joy wishes you Happy Birthday and a year full of joy (she also wishes that you will visit the Pokemon Center for many years to come, which really makes you smile as a Pokemon fan because you imagine continuing to be a Pokemon fan for even more years). as a really sweet lullaby remix of the Pokemon Center starts playing?

Well, I remember seeing that for the first time in OmegaRuby last year and I was quite moved with what I saw. I also learned this also happens in X and Y, so I tried it out on my copy of Y and noticed something similar happen but with different confetti and slightly different wording when Nurse Joy first greets you after the confetti falls. After all that I saw, I vowed to experience the phenomena again for this year.

It turns out the whole dim light followed with confetti entrance only happens one time in X and Y. I remember booting up my copy of Pokemon Y today, and when I first entered the Pokemon Center today, I noticed there was no confetti but there was still the birthday remix, the cake in the background, and Nurse Joy's wish that you'll visit the Pokemon Center for years to come. I was intrigued by this, so I played my copy of OmegaRuby and went to the Pokemon Center first thing. On that game, I still got the confetti entrance and Nurse Joys initial "I hope this will be a truly wonderful year for you greeting".

Long story short, I think OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire wins for the sweetest birthday commemoration between those games and X/Y because it looks it will always do the confetti greeting whenever you enter the Pokemon Center on your birthday, unlike X/Y where the confetti greeting only happens the first time you visit the Pokemon Center on your birthday.

Either way, it still a really sweet treat that is one of my favorite aspects of generation 6. The lullaby remix also really hits you in the feels in a happy way too!

So, any Undertale players tried out LISA, the Painful RPG?

A friend gave it to me on Steam today, and after some time with it, this was me.

Does anyone remember that Blue Gear anime thing that was based on the Console wars in the 90s? Man I kinda wish it still continued (At the same time I feel like it's there) so I can see human designs to Sega characters like Amigo, and Billy (Although I feel like the Nintendo side were kinda like evil stereotypes in my opinion, Idk why).

Someone suggested you add Slenderman to your game.
If you do, you HAVE to make him a super friendly and generous guardian spirit of children to play off the legend Slenderman stalks children.

He should also try to embrace his internet fame by trying to make meme jokes and failing miserably.

Hey Swamp Sensei Swamp Sensei , are you really looking to make a game, or is this just a fun idea?

if you're looking for a designer, I'll volunteer, I like this idea.

I even had a bit of inspiration for a wolfman design, what'ya think?

He was once a wealthy man of great stature in society until he fell under the curse of the full moon, his personality kept intact by the mysterious powers of the jewel on his cane. He fights to quell the blood-thirst that comes with each possession.

Someone suggested you add Slenderman to your game.
If you do, you HAVE to make him a super friendly and generous guardian spirit of children to play off the legend Slenderman stalks children.

He should also try to embrace his internet fame by trying to make meme jokes and failing miserably.
Eyy, that was me.

Slenderman should totally be a good guy who just has the misfortune of killing people by getting too close to them.

He just wants friends. :sadsheep:

Also, you said you were looking for villains?
I have one

Actually on second thought don't make Bloody Mary a character
I'll just be disappointed it isn't the The Wolf Among Us version

Also, I really would love to see a drawing of casual Medusa.
