So something has crossed my mind regarding Bayonetta.

Some people are saying that Sakurai made up the idea of her winning the ballot and he simply choose her. This just came to me however...

Wouldn't Nintendo have a say or influence on the ballot? They must have known what Sakurai was going to choose, and it couldn't have been just Sakurai looking at these votes. So if he wanted Bayonetta, they must have actually seen where she stood in the ballot.

I know it seems like I'm talking about her a bit too much, but Bayonetta has gotten me really interested in her.

The more and more I listen to reactions and see posts here, Bayonetta winning the ballot gets less and less surprising. It seems that tons of people either wanted her and voted for her or wanted her and didn't realize it.

She wasn't first worldwide overall since they did specifically mention that she was 1st worldwide out of the realisable choices, but she was indeed first overall in Europe at least.

In hindsight that doesn't surprise me, Bayonetta and her games have a lot of European appeal to them.

I don't know about the others, but I'm not trying to dissuade you from leaving (to be honest I'm in the same mindset as you, I've been slowly phasing myself off the site at this rate, because I'm not enjoying it as much anymore, because I honestly question how much I really like Smash 4, and because I want to focus on things like my art - and I won't be making any announcements, people won't really know I'm gone). It's just that for some reason I feel like I did say something that wasn't very nice somewhere down the line, however slight, and I want to apologise just in case. I may not necessarily be part of the problem but there's no harm in offering apologies for any past moments where I may have been a bit of a **** even if they're forgotten.

It's a shame that you feel compelled to leave but I won't stop you since I actually am in a similar boat.

Yes and no.
I am trying to get a GED but, overall I'd like to direct my focus to real life instead of forums.
Because no matter how you look at it, posting on forums is incredibly time-consuming.

Honestly, I don't know if I'm ever going to enjoy playing as Corrin anymore. The character is so damn controversial that all the (sometimes justified, sometimes not justified) negativity is ruining my perception of him as a fighter. I think it's advisable for me to take a break from Smash-related forum content for some time, just so I can maintain a healthier mindset about this.

Before I take my eventual leave, however, I might as well ask all of you - what were your experiences like within the speculation community these past few years? Does anybody have any stories to share?

My Experience with DLC Speculation in a Nutshell:

"Cloud's not happening. His main game wasn't even on Nintendo."

*I eat my own words as I watch Cloud's reveal trailer.*

"Bayonetta's not happening. There's no way they can tone her down without taking away her appeal."

*I eat my own words as I watch Bayonetta's reveal trailer.*

"Snake's not returning. Look at Konami's current state and how they've treated Sakurai's good friend Kojima."

As for speculation on the initial roster, I remember becoming increasingly confident in Shulk's inclusion. Certain Tweets by Sakurai, Monolith Soft, and Adam Howden seemed to hint at him, and then certain leaks came to my attention.

Honestly I actually like Corrin. I like the Fire Emblem series and he has a very interesting moveset incorporating his dragon abilities in his moveset and he uses water instead of fire.

BluePikmin11 I honestly though Bayonetta was a long shot due to her series and obvious nature but lo and behold Sakurai proves me wrong. Congrats on one of most wanted getting in. She looks really fun to use.

Experience with speculation?

I couldn't be bothered to speculate much for DLC, much less pre-release so I just kinda went with the flow most of the time.

But two things I did say were that people were overlooking Cloud too much as a Square character and that I thought they were the next big company in line to get a character (this was in response to comments regarding Rayman as the next third party being the most likely).

Other things I said (that I got wrong) were that the last batch of characters were gonna be just 1st party and the ballot being a suggestion box something sometthing wolf.

I'm getting so emotional.

As far as speculation goes, I don't have too many distinct memories.

Rosalina is the only one that stands out. I have wanted her since Brawl and I began expecting her around the time the Galaxy stage was revealed, as well as her 3D World reveal. I was still naturally shocked that it actually happened but I always felt like some sort of outcast when hard-core speculators were like "HOW AND WHY?", because her inclusion made sense. Rosalina is a more extreme example of Cloud's situation to me - people should have predicted her and considered her more seriously, but they didn't because of personal biases, misinterpreting the character and not researching her ("SHE WOULD JUST BE A PEACH CLONE WHAT ELSE COULD SHE DO???"), or fan rules.

Luma is still technically the biggest surprise Smash character. Nobody predicted him. :V

Also I actually did semi predict Duck Hunt Duo. I always thought the Dog would be a good assist trophy. But he's flat out playable instead.

For the most part though, nothing else stood out, aside from the most recent three, and maybe Mega Man and Pac-Man.

Speculation wasn't something I really enjoyed or found interesting because there was so much dictatorship between leaks and fan rules and some people trying to make it "orderly".

ALSO I've got a challenge for you guys.

This is just something pretty cool that strays from the usual roster-building thoughts people tend to have. Let's say you get put in charge of creating a roster for a Smash Bros. spin-off arcade title but, to go with the theme, there's a catch: all characters in the game must have originated in arcades. Any character that made their first appearance on a console is ineligible, but the companies characters are from don't matter, so you're allowed to go nuts. Who do you pick? How many characters, given these restrictions? Do you go for arcade classics, or more obscure titles? I'll post my challenge roster sometime tonight.
