This whole
PM situation reminds me of the
Touhou Smash Battle snafu that happened recently (
FalKoopa
will know what I'm talking about).
The short version is that From Soy Sauce, an indie dev team, wanted to make a
Touhou-themed fighting game based on
Smash's engine and release it on the eshop. It was crowdfunded (I think via Indiegogo?), and they were requested by ZUN, the creator of
Touhou, to use something other than the
Touhou IP because he couldn't endorse a
doujin game being developed with other people's money. With ZUN's blessing, the team decided to continue development with their own original characters instead.
It's not quite the same context, since the
PM thing is quite a bit shadier in terms of what we know and the conspiracy theories flying hither and thither, but it
is possible that the PMDT were contacted by Nintendo and told that they can only continue development of their product (or future products) if it does not use the Nintendo IP in any way.
I don't know, just spitballin'. Either way, I still love
PM and will continue to play it until the dev team release their next project.
