Hello SmashBoards.

It is with great excitement that I present to you the FIRST EVER TOURNAMENT for SUPER SMASH LAND. Not only do I plan on this being the first tournament, but I am also planning on this to be a release party of sorts since the current plan is to get the game finished a few weeks before COT5 and then release it with exclusive stuff only available at the tournament.

What is Super Smash Land?
Super Smash Land is a PC Fangame that is designed to take the experience of Smash Brothers and place it into the limitations of the original Gameboy. The project consists of me, Dan Fornace doing art and programming, and InversePhase covering Sound Effects and Music.

The game consists of only two actions, Jump and Attack. So to beat your opponent, you must rely on spacing and knowledge of starting and ending lag on your attacks. There are 9+ attacks for each character and they are all stored on the same button. The game can be played on a keyboard, but is best played using the Joy2Key that I include in the zip file along with a USB controller such as THIS SWEET NES CONTROLLER.

Here is the trailer for the Second Demo:

You can download the demo for Windows here if you would like to practice:

The final version will have 6 characters and 12 stages and should be ready for the tournament. Go to the WORKSHOP POST to share your ideas on current balance.

How do I enter?

The tournament is being run as a side event at Chibo's awesome Clash of the Titans 5. The tournament takes place in Philadelphia, PA from June 25th-26th. You can enter the tournament for free as long as you have paid the venue fee.

I plan on using Chibo's model of rolling pools entry. This means that during the first day of tournament you can just walk up and play a game in the pools round if there is an opponent willing to play. Depending on how many people come, I will take the first 64 - 32 players with a winning record (limit of 5 pools games) and put them into a bracket. Then I will just post the bracket and hopefully players will be able to go out and find the people, or people will be able to stop by whenever they are free. I will probably do a bracket on the first day and then another tournament on the second day if there is still interest.

To secure a game in pools, please just post here that you are interested and I will add you to this list. If your name is added, then we will try to make sure you play at least one game before the first tournament enters the bracket.

What do I win?

You will win some sweet custom swag that will only be obtainable at CoT5. Smash Land is free to play and enjoy as it is a fan-game and I own no rights. However, we will be selling a disc with the soundtrack and a complementary copy of the game for those of you who like owning a hard copy. We are not sure of the price yet. I want to make the disc look nice with professional printing and a custom jewel case, so the price will be affected by how much that costs.

The prizes are going to cost me alot of money upfront, so if you want to help out by donating here or at the tourney then that would be awesome. I cannot sell this game, but I put a lot of work into it and I just want to give people a chance to get some unique stuff =).

Right now the plan is to also make up 6 unique posters each themed around a single character as well as themed around the CoT5 first tournament. These posters will be awarded to the winners and will never be printed up again. My brother was also thinking of making up some shirts, but there is no confirmation on that yet. We will probably have some other swag.

Finally, the winner of the first tournament will get posted on my website and perhaps get a cameo in some DLC that I was thinking of adding to Smash Land after it is complete.

What's your setup?
This, I am not sure of just yet. I still need to discuss with Chibo what kind of room we will have. I am thinking of running 3 setups with USB controllers. 2 setups will be for tournament games if a tournament is running and one will be for friendlies and/or money matches. While the game does support team matches, the tournament will probably only be 1v1s.
I would also love to have a wall behind me so I can set up the 6 posters that players can win. But this is limited to what is available and I want to keep my setup to one table so chibo can have all his room and I can manage it better. Also THIS WILL BE A SIDE EVENT. THAT MEANS IT TAKES A BACK SEAT TO BRAWL TOURNAMENTS. If you are entered in a brawl tournament and have matches, then WE will be the ones trying to accommodate. Smash Land has been accepted as an addition, and we do not want players missing brawl matches by playing it.

Rules
In the final release, Smash Land will have a tournament setting in versus mode. This locks the game at 3 stocks, 8 minutes with all stages on, but most stages will have stage hazards turned off.
Matches will be best of 3 with the Finals at best of 5. The first game is played on a random stage. The second stage is picked by the losing player but cannot be the first stage or the stage striked by the winner if he elects to stage strike. The third stage cannot be the second stage or the stage striked by the winner if he elects to stage strike.
All Characters and Stages will be unlocked to be played. So the tournament will ruin the surprise. Deal with it!
Smash Land has no items, no shields, no final smashes. Although it does have tap jump if youre a noob and you like that.

selling a disc with the soundtrack
I'm a major fan of chiptune music, how much, I want to make sure I have the money.

Also consider me confirmed. Nothing to lose by entering, right?

Disc price will be announced after I figure out how much each will cost me haha.

And yeah, no harm in entering at all. I'm hoping people will stop by and try it out.

Hi again guys.

So right now the plan is just for PC. I brought the work in progress to TooManyGames over the weeekend and the response was generally positive. I also met some people capable of making some sweet Super Smash Land prizes to make the tournament more awesome (this will be the only chance to get them)

I think that the tournament should be a lot of fun and I hope that everyone who is thinking of attending CoT5 stops by. I'll also have the game on a disk available for a small fee (to pay for the cost of printing and burning them)

In the meantime, you guys can get your practice on at:

Hey Guys,

Just ordered the main prizes that will be given away to the final two contestants. I will also have two other prizes that I am thinking I might raffle away. Does anyone have any suggestions for other goodies I could sell / give out as prizes?

I am working hard to get the game done so I can have it on a CD to give out. There is a chance that this version may be a lacking a few single player features, but I will make sure it is as polished as possible and give a link where you can download an updated version if I release one.
