Nintendo is a weird company... Though I'm sure it will pull itself out of the rut it is currently in.Interesting article criticizing Nintendo on CNN Money

Almost stopped reading at this point. Almost. The hand-held 3DS gaming device has also been a disappointment outside of Japan.
>Implying Kinect is something innovative. Some new Wii U features, like the touchscreen-equipped controller feel convoluted, and less innovative compared to technologies like Microsoft's Kinect camera.
I don't think it would be comfortable playing Super Mario Bros. on my Android phone, but whatever.Nintendo is adamant that it won't release its games for smartphones, despite the fact that they'd likely be instant top sellers.
See above. Also, you can't compare Nintendo to a third party company like Square Enix. Nintendo releasing SMB to an iPhone would compromise their own 3DS market. It would be like Sony releasing a God of War game to smartphones: not gonna happen.[...] but looking at the success that companies like Square Enix have had reissuing its Final Fantasy titles on the iPhone, what real harm is there in offering games like Super Mario Brothers? Nobody is going to buy a Nintendo 3DS just to download that from the eStore.
And yet, it stays alive and dominating the portable video game market, notably in Japan, but quite well outside of that country.Since the days of the Nintendo 64, it's always been pretty easy to see when, where and why Nintendo was going to stumble as a company.
BEHOLD THE TEA SERVING TECHNIQUE THAT'S BEEN PASSED DOWN THE ARMSTRONG LINE FOR GENERATIONS!I'm now picturing this guy as a meido.
And I raiseMy body...
Can't Control It!!!
The question is that smartphones don't have deep and sophisticated games such as the ones you find on the 3DS or Vita.@ Frostwraith, yeah I agree the guy was a little to hard and direct on his points. However, the handheld market is in trouble when you take into account iphones. People are going to get phones no matter what and now that they can play games on phones, it gives them less incentive to get a gaming system when they already have one with their phone. One of the reasons PS2 was the best selling consoles was the fact you could watch DVDs and listen to Music on it. Don't underestimate the dual systems. Technical is heading towards uniting the PC, Video Game Console, Phone, VCR, and Television all into one device.
I kind of went off track there, basically I just wanted to post the link to get people's thoughts and for your reading enjoyment. No real opinion on my side.
Agree with your points totally but they are getting more sophisticated overtime as he quoted Final Fantasy's appearance. Plus if people still loved sophistication, PC would still be dominant as they can still produce the best graphics and depth. It is kind of scary times for gaming industry with the movement in technology. The question is that smartphones don't have deep and sophisticated games such as the ones you find on the 3DS or Vita.
While the common mortal may be satisfied with little games like Angry Birds, other people like games with more depth like those found on 3DS and Vita.
The problem is that the 'common mortal' is getting progressively dumber. Attention spans are shrinking and traditional gaming as a hobby is shrinking. Some of the best games are handhelds (Professor Layton, Pokemon, etc.) but now it's getting to the point that people don't care about quality. All they want is a cheap and quick escape. Let's hope that the trend doesn't hurt the video game industry too much. The question is that smartphones don't have deep and sophisticated games such as the ones you find on the 3DS or Vita.

In other words, we're in the "junkfood crisis" as I'd like to call it.The problem is that the 'common mortal' is getting progressively dumber. This so much. I agree entirely with your points. The problem is that the 'common mortal' is getting progressively dumber. Attention spans are shrinking and traditional gaming as a hobby is shrinking. This raises an interesting question: Why do you play Video Games? This so much. I agree entirely with your points.
Somewhere during the turn of the century, people stopped caring about quality and now the companies are exploiting it for quick money. Even Nintendo can be considered guilty of this with the many Mario games they release per year.
I mean, I don't consider myself a very competitive gamer, but I like games with some depth. You could say I'm somewhere between the typical casual gamer and the competitive hardcore gamer.
