Many people, myself included, think that the forced total anonymity of random internet battles is too extreme a safety measure. Luckily, this is one complaint that can sort of be worked around.

facing right

A - up tilt
B - forward tilt
C - down tilt
D - up smash
E - forward smash
F - down smash

G - n aerial
H - ^ aerial
I - > aerial
J - v aerial
K - < aerial

L - jab
M - grab

facing left

N - jab
O - grab

P - up tilt
Q - forward tilt
R - down tilt
S - up smash
T - forward smash
U - down smash

V - n air
W - ^ aerial
X - > aerial
Y - v aerial
Z - < aerial

number aerials jumped from crouching

facing right

0 - n aerial
1 - ^ aerial
2 - > aerial
3 - v aerial
4 - < aerial

facing left

5 - n aerial
6 - ^ aerial
7 - > aerial
8 - v aerial
9 - < aerial

Let's talk - crouch repeatedly
Let's fight - any B move (or just start fighting)
Friend Codes? - air dodge
Who are you? - empty short hop
I am: - ground dodge
Not right now - turn in circles
Ignore the last part (for if you make a mistake) - shield and release
Let me start over - roll

If a tilt, smash, or grab would take too long, simply crouch and then do the alternate (tilt to substitute for a smash, vice versa, jab for grab).

I know the most obvious flaw in this is that both/all combatants would have to be aware of this language for it to be of any use. Well, could there be any better place for it than here? The US release is still two months away, that's plenty of time for many many people to notice it. Also time for any forseeable problems to be solved.

Speaking of which, the second biggest problem is that it would be a pain to memorize, and tedious to do. Which is why I'm also starting a registry of names and abbreviations, which people can refer to after the fight, and then they can contact each other through more conventional internet means. If there ends up being some big list of friend codes, maybe the abbreviations could just be tacked onto that.

The third apparent problem is that it's risky to try to "talk" to someone during a fight. Crouching is fast and safe, though, so it should be easy to sneak in a few of those, that's why it's the primary signal. If your opponent won't even give you that much free time, you can always use respawn invincibility. If they don't return the signal, oh well, keep fighting, at least you tried.

Thoughts? Comments? Possible improvements? Please refrain from opining things Sakurai should have done, this is about what WE can do.

How about you just get friend codes on a forum..

and then get the Instant messenger name of whoever you're fighting...

I really don't think anyone will pull up smashboards every time someone starts crouching continuously. most likely the will receive a falcon punch to the face.

Apparently nobody thus far has much faith in random matches. Ironically, if it's because of the small probability of meeting a challenging opponent, them abstaining will only make the situation worse for the rest of us.

I think you're on the right track, only, not alphabet.
How about dashdancing 3 times, grounddodge twice and dashdance 3 times means join the Smashboard IRC chat room?
of course, we'd need a irc room first (a real one. on efnet!)

I think a better solution, if we really want to put the effort into this, is for there to be a sign that you want to exchange friend codes, a sign to decline (if you're being sportsmanly, that is; just attacking will get your message across too) and a site which has a chatroom or something like that for people who are playing Brawl at the time.

You give the signal, you both go to the chatroom, and then try to figure out who you're playing from there. You can really narrow it down by giving the specifications of your match - which stage, which characters in which colors, any specific rules. If that doesn't uniquely specify your match, then you can ask for the other player to use a specific attack or taunt.

"Typing" out any message using your system would take an absurdly long time and be difficult to remember and interpret. What I'm suggesting would be gimpy, but it's at least plausible. The only problem with it is that it would be a problem if there were multiple sites you could go to for this purpose. If SWF added a chatroom tho...

Dang, ShortFuse had the same idea as me while I was typing mine out. But I was more detailed.

Also, if any interaction is possible while paused during online matches, that would probably be the preferred way to give the signal, as it can't as easily be abused to be an ******* who's just getting you to lower your guard.

Too bad this would take an hour to give out a message as small as the one I'm typing AND for someone to understand it. I find it Ironic someone such as SuperDoodleMan started a topic on the right track, but has no uses. I guess writing scripts for smash movies and well.... WRITING are 2 different things.
wait...... This does have some uses, but nothing that are particually helpful.....
Doesnt this mean that people could cuss their ***es off without any way to be stopped? lol

From now on everytime just before the match ends I will crouch repeatedly just to see the reaction. That is if the match was enjoyable.

I was thinking I'd just have my AIM username as one of my taunts or something, and then they could contact me if they wanted. This whole alphabet would just be too much work.

You can't taunt in random fights.

Also, I can't believe people are taking this seriously. Are we really that desperate?

I have an idea to make it a lot easier.

So, say you want to talk with the person, right? To let them know you want to talk, just do the following: Duck, duck, taunt. Any taunt is fine. If the other person understands, they will respond with the opposite: Taunt, duck, duck. Once again, it doesn't matter what taunt.

Now you're ready to start.

The duck, duck, taunt means to get on this board. However, in order to find the person, this board will have to make a separate board, called something like "Finding your opponent" or something. This board will be used for finding the person you are fighting. So the duck duck taunt is basically saying, "Look for my topic on the Find your opponent board."

Now, for the board, the title of your post will have the match name, and there will be a better description in the actual message. Say you are Sonic and fighting Pit at Norfair. Your topic title will be "Sonic vs Pit at Norfair." Then for the main message, it would be something like...

"Hey guys. I am Sonic and I am fighting Pit at Norfair. I am player 1 and Pit is player 2. I gave the duck duck taunt signal and they OK'd it, so this topic is for the person to find me. If you're not sure if I am the right person you're looking for, then tell me to do something on the game and see if I do it."

So maybe there are 2 Sonic vs Pit at Norfair topics. The person who was Pit might reply to one of them, saying..."Hey. There are 2 of these topics, so just to make sure you're the right person, on the game can you jump 5 times slowly, then do a couple regular attacks on me? If you do it, then you're the right person."

So that's basically my idea. Let me know what you think. :)

There is no way I am gonna learn this communication system. That is way too much. Just swap friend codes here in the forums.

It would be rather useless I think. Everyone at smashboards or gamefaqs or somewhere else could learn and use it, but there will be people who have no idea what it means, and those are the ones that aren't here on smashboards anyway, so they don't know this Language or board. (So they can't come on)

It would be useful if you want to find out if there is someone who knows this is in the fight...

Edit: Ooops nvm I just got reminded you can't use taunts for strangers, blerg, Nintendo really likes to be careful with these things huh.

You think I'm going to spell out a word using a bunch of moves to someone anonymous, whom they probably have no idea wtf I'm doin? Nah. I'll stick to freind codes and playing anonymously.

Yeah, way too complicated. Why people worry so much over the anonimty of random play, I dont know. Willing smash buddies can always be found here. Get 30 friends on your list and your set. You could smash 24/7 to your hearts content in Friend matches.

I think the chatroom idea is very good (much better than mine...). The different directions of aerials could signify which IM service you prefer, or there could be an official shoutbox here or elsewhere.

The list of needed phrases would shrink to:

Let's talk - crouch repeatedly
Let's fight - any B move (or just start fighting)
Let's chat - air dodge
Not right now - turn in circles

The rest can be done in chat. It could hardly be simpler. Badmouth this premise if you want, but by virtue of reading this topic, you now have the additional option to try to initiate contact in random matches, or to respond if someone tries to initiate with you. The odds of it working may be slim, but it's more than what Sakurai gave you. You can still exchange friend codes however you like, this is just an additional option to enhance random play. More options is GOOD.

Well, suppose you played someone who put up a **** GOOD FIGHT, but you have no clue who they are?

I don't know about you, but anyone that is much better than I is definatly someone I would want to meet. Honestly, it wouldn't be hard if we just had a chatroom dedicated to this, and spread the word to every Smash forum out there.

Not every "good" smasher comes to these forums mind you.

Edit:

Ok so the random matches are completely anonymous...

But if you are looking for difficult opponents, I'm sure you will have no trouble finding some challenges here on smashboards.

Personally I think the random fight thing will be laggy unless there is an option to play with the people who have the best connection or are closest to you regionally.

The idea of some smash language is not only ineffective, but is just likely to get you killed in a random match.
