Super Mario World

One of the better SNES games, Super Mario World is still popular today because it can be hacked. People can now make their own levels. I'll still hop on this occasionally, it's a great sidescroller.

No one has talked about this game yet?

It's one of my favorite of the mario games. Secret exits, hidden worlds, and Yoshi; what more could you ask for?

This is probably my mario game. I loved Yoshi on it sooo much!!!!! <3 I went for him over any powerup.
Also, the Koopalings were and will be my favorite bosses.

Wow, i can't believe barely anyone has said anything about this. This game was the shiz.

It's a great game. I played it with my brother for hours. Not only were the levels interesting it introduced Yoshi as said before.

Also, it had hidden music, I always found that fun.

♣ When ever I make a mistake and full off the edge with Yoshi, I always die with him. I never betray Yoshi for my own survival. ;_; ♥

♣ Special levels forever. <3 ♥

This was one of the first videogames I ever played.

And BTW, the hidden sprites you unlocked after beating Specials sucked hard.

I beat the Advance remake of this about a month ago, Dragon Coins and all. Made sure I completed the Dragon Coins objective and the stage objective at the same time, lol.

I lost so many lives at the Tubular level, and it took me about ten years to discover the secret exit at butter Bridge to get to Soda Lake, as well as the Top Secret Area. And the Ghost Ship is one of my all time favorite Mario levels thanks to the gargantuan dive you make to get to the cameo ? ball from SMB3. Really fun game.

Oh do you mean the smb music after waiting for it in the special area? :3

I loved this game. Also loved beating bowser as many times as I could. I love the underwater levels as well.

This was my first game in my life.

I don't remember how I did, but I was 4. My parents taught me how to jump over the little fireplace and thats it. Rest I learned myself, as boys do.

Eggmanland, obviously.
this was awesome.

I had left it on so I could grab some food and I heard the secret music.

I was so ecstatic that I called my friend and told him....so much fun :chuckle:

I only betray Yoshi to get to soda lake. No other time.
There's actually a way to do it without betraying Yoshi, though it's significantly harder. Take Yoshi to the end and jump off him so he passes the gate. Then, spin jump your way back to the longer bridges with a cape. Start flying and stay over the saws, then dive bomb under the gate and spring back up. Recover your Yoshi, enjoy your 3-up and secret exit.

I actually thought that flying was the only way to get the secret exit until recently, lol.

You'll find it starting at 0:33. I don't remember how long you had to leave the game on before you heard it however.
I don't remember it taking that long. 5-10 minutes tops.

I just got this recently, and I haven't really enjoyed it as much as Mario 3. I seem to be progressing through it really quickly, and it just seems quite forgiving compared to other games in the series. However, I do enjoy it, although the controls are a bit odd being as they are, same thing with the DS game- I'm used to run being directly to the left of jump, and adding in a spin equals me cconfused XD.

I am really fond of the graphical style though, moreso the backgrounds rather than the characters themselves. That being said the game is really good, and I can see why everyone thinks of it so highly- it deserves the praise (unlike Mario 64 ).

I love Super Mario World, especially because of the cape and level styles, but as Jimmy said, this game is very forgiving, especially in the remake which kind of takes away from the difficulty of the levels, although the last Reznor Fortress is very hard to go damageless.

I've been wanting this game forever.

My friend finally found two copies at Goodwill the other day, and I'm finally able to play it. I love it so far, in every aspect -- music, graphics, gameplay, etc. Fortunately, I don't suck as much at SMW as I do at most other 2D Mario games.

I decided to pull out my SNES for this game the other day. I'm totally re-doing everything in it. I forgot how much I loved the stage names:

Vanilla Dome
Donut Plains
Butter Bridge
Cookie Mountain
Cheese Bridge Area
Soda Lake
Chocolate Mountain

I mean, really that's pretty fun. I got hungry pretty fast.

Yeah I love how the names are all food and drinks. (except for the first, last, and
two
bonus worlds)

I wonder why they didn't really do that in SMW2: Yoshi's Island (not that that's bad).

Agreed, the names are amazing. Its a nice break from the usual sky/swamp/desert etc. pattern they usually have.

Does anyone have any memorable stages? I remember really liking the stage on donut plains with the rhino-like monsters for some weird reason

Now that I think of it, it's pretty funny there's grass growing everywhere in the Chocolate Island stages, but not the overworld map. After all, who wants to eat green chocolate? lol

Anybody up for calling for a Super Mario World 3 anyone?

How awesome would that be as a WiiWare download? With how easy it is to mod the game, and all the innnovative things that have been made by fans, imagine what Nintendo could do if they tried their hand at another classic 16-Bit Mario game? Nothing wrong with the 3D epics in the sidescrolling New Super Mario Bros. or the Mario Galaxy games, but it'd give the younger generation a chance to re-experience what made these games so memorable!

Well...if they can adapt to it after being used to what we have now. I'm so glad I was born in 1989. 20 years old, gamer to the core, and around for the time when Sonic the Hedgehog began and Super Mario World was all the rage on the Super Nintendo. Go video games!

I remember plugging my console into this really REALLY old color TV from like...the 70s or 80s, at my Grandparents' place? The color was completely wonky, but it made me feel like I was playing a Bizarro version of Super Mario World. Imagine my surprise years later when I finally beat Tubular, and the other levels, and got that messed up alternate universe... xD

To be honest, cool as it was, I liked the original world better.

/done rambling

This stands to me as the best Mario title to date. The overworld was the first one that made some sort of sense, and the scope, music and gameplay were all top-notch.

My favourite levels were the first ones. Just being able to run at max-speed through a level while gaining 1-ups and jumping on enemies = great. The ghosthouses were pretty good too. Some of them were pretty confusing and mystical.

I did hate that one ghost house on Choco island >_<.

@Kuraudo i think another SMW like game would be a great idea! Especially for Wiiware.

Or maybe even a version that could be ported to the sd card, transferred to the computer, and then coded to share custom Mario games with other players via wi-fi? *drools*

I do not believe in ROM hacking or computer emulation, especially since stuff like the Virtual Console came out, and feel that Nintendo should find a solution to rid the internet of some video game hackers by giving them a legal solution, plus there are plenty of people that would love to pay to create their own games, myself included.

Anyone remember in the woods, theres one level that continuously drops Bob-ombs and Goombas on your head? Yeah... I dont like that level very much.
Yep...as said it's Outrageous.

I still think Tubular was the worst for me...I had such a hard time getting the balloon power-ups. I'd always miss by a second, or die because I'd get hit with a football/baseball!

I play through this game about every year, but I never beat Bowser's castle because it doesn't count towards completion; which I thought was pretty weird.

Instead, the only way to complete your file on the opening screen is to get it to "96* (the asterisk represents a star)". The number represents how many exits there are in the game. And what determines the number of exits is the color the stage is on the overview map. If it's red, it has 2 exits and yellow, only 1. I don't think entering and exiting the "top secret area" helps towards exit completion.

I wonder why they stopped at 96 lol.

This is one of my favoritist games of all time.

Does anyone have any memorable stages?
Donut Plains 1
Donut Plains Secret 2
Vanilla Secrets 2 and 3
Vanilla Dome 4
Ludwig's Castle
Forest Secret 2
Choco Island 2
Choco Island 4
Wendy's Castle
Ghost Pirate Ship
Valley Fortress (oh GOOOOOD)
Valley Ghost House
Back Door (=P)
Star Road 5
Tubular
Groovy
Funky

Each and every one of them fun in their own unique way. Especially the Ghost Ship and Forest Secret 2.

Though Valley Fortress and Wendy's Castle can go burn in the ground.

This was a great game as a child. I used to spend so much time on the game when I went to my grandparents house.

Now I can enjoy the game on the Virtual Console.

@UberMario: Unfortunently, the Virtual Console will not be able to be an perfect solution the piracy crisis. For example, rumored legal issues surrounding Earthbound that could prevent an VC release, which only encouraged more ROM download of the game and jump prices of the already expensive cartridges. But let's not go into details about this.
