edit-My mistake it was an editor named Lucas Johnson. But he sounds awful confident.

This may be old, but for those who didn't see the latest Smash it up! on IGN. It was another 3rd party character suggestion article.

The interesting news comes from Lucas when he says

"you can go ahead and let go of the "Sakurai said only 1-2 more third-party spots" argument right now, because that's ridiculously outdated news. We know there are going to be more than that – count on it – "

Those are some very strong words indeed. Look at how count on it is really emphasized, and he used the words "we know"

So if more 3rd party characters are going to be in it, then how big is the roster for the game going to be?!

I say there should be a character from each of the major third-party companies.

Yeah, normally I wouldn't trust it. he's been wrong before. But the way he approached it makes it seem like he knows something. Even if it is just other 3rd parties that are involved with the game.

Since he was talking about potential 3rd party chars, he probably just said that to make his article more believable. No need for surprise bonars.

Really never expected IGN's Nintendo person to make such a strong speculation.

Also can you give us a direct link to the article he stated that?

This is the same guy who "confirmed" Halo DS, and we know what the Bungie staff said in regards to that.

I don't believe it.

There aren't many more third party characters that I'd like to see, but I wouldn't complain if we got more. I'm expecting the roster to be around 45, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it at 50.

Lucas M. Thompson, not Matt Cassamassina, wrote the article, and I did not see Matt quoted anywhere other than when it mentioned him wanting Leon S. Kennedy from Resident Evil in the game.

Either way, it's just speculation that the game is going to be bigger than originally planned, even by Sakurai, because when he said the 2-3 3rd party characters, or whatever it was, he probably did not really think he would be including Map Editor, he was most likely unsure about online, etc etc.

Abra abra cadabra. I wanna reach out and grab ya!
You can't spell ignorant without IGN.
Takeshi, you're my hero (even though I like IGN:laugh:).

Matt's a cool guy, and for the most part his opinions are right on. I remember when I saw him at the IGN.com convention at a panel. He was destroying everyone who defended the PS3 and the Xbox360. Everyone in the audience cheered for him!

But yeah, take it with a grain of salt. But also remember that if, and only if, third party companies are asking Nintendo to put their characters into Brawl, Sakurai would be stupid to say no.

And to Takeshi: At least IGN is better than the Nintendo-haters over at Gamespot:laugh:

my opinion is when sakurai said 1-2 more, it wasnt a rule or fact. it was just an assumption. like "oh i dunno, 1-2" its up to him how many are in. I wouldnt honestly expect more than 4 3rd party characters, but its not limited to 3, just to whatever he wants

There are a few more 3rd party characters I'd like to see in, but I hope they don't decide to add someone who is completely un-fitting.

Ryu or Leon Kennedy... They kinda just don't fit into Smash as characters. Snake was a stretch but he at least seems to fit... I can't see the same acceptance with someone like Ryu.

I really doubt IGN has any inside information, and if they did they wouldn't be so open about it. Besides, their Smash It Up feature is completely awful. Every week they come up with the most ridiculous suggestions and talk about them like they're remotely plausible. I mean, come on, Dante? There's no way I can take anything this guy claims seriously.

I remember seeing a video of Halo DS on a blog.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=89cAOCSZMCM
The video was from a quick "demo" they did that basically set up the idea. If I remember correctly the idea was considered, but they dropped the project after less than a month. Matt from IGN went on with it for months after that though, whether he knew they dropped it or not, I don't know.

Regardless, they often don't have their sources straight, so I will believe it when I see it.

Finally, we can put "Halo DS" to bed. There's been rumours, "proof" and heresay flying around the place for years now, culminating in this week's "footage" of the game. Thankfully, during his little chat with Crecente earlier today, Bungie's Community and Franchise Director Brian Jarrard clears up the whole mess once and for all:

This rumor has been circulating for a while and as you know we even saw some real life screens and assets this week. Ultimately it's up to Microsoft to decide if and when they take Halo to a different platform. That particular demo was in fact created and I believe it was an unsolicited pitch a long time ago but nothing ever came of it.
Done. Finished. It may have been "real" in the sense you could touch it. But not real in the sense it had nothing to do with Bungie, and was little more than elaborate, digital fan mail.
Yeah... IGN taking something small and making it huge. Like I said, I will believe it when I see it. Megaman will probably get in and be the last third party character.

Don't get your hopes up, guys, chances are that he's not hinting at a possible inside source and that he's just making an extremely confident assertion.

I'm right here! What a silly question.
Technically speaking, the IGN guys don't know anymore about Brawl than we do. The whole "Smash it Up!" series is a load of drivel. "If you make enough predictions, you'll eventually get one right." and that specific statement was nothing more than a confident assumption.

However, that is not to say these ideas aren't based on logic. Casamassima stated in IGN's "Wii-k in Review" podcast that he fully expects a Square rep, based on the sheer number of Square contributors, which is a quite reasonable expectation. They have been looking at companies "borrowing" Nintendo mascots in their games, and think Brawl is the place where Nintendo is repaid. And there may be other companies wanting to include a rep after seeing others' franchises gain such publicity. The IGN guys, like us, are just putting two and two together and asserting their beliefs.

That is exactly why I don't even read it. I would rather make my own predictions than read someone else's. It's much more fun that way.

Just because the game has progressed beyond what it was initially expected to be does not mean that Nintendo was able to get rights to more characters for their game, it just does not work that way. They could make guesses on new features and use that logic, but not third party characters.

In the article he sounds like he's talking amongst a group of his friends. The way he says.. "We know there are going to be more than that.." doesn't really strike me as "Sakurai showed me the new third party characters." But more like casual way of saying.. oh-ya-know-it's-gunna-happen type thing.

Just saying he doesn't sound legit.. I don't think he really had the inside news, but that doesn't mean what he said is wrong.

also.. for Snake to be in opens up a lot. Wouldn't be able to imagine him as a brawl character if he wasn't in brawl :p... so I mean, anything can go.

I really don't trust IGN much anymore. They're better than most other sites in my experience, but their opinions are just the pits. And my opinion sinks a little more with every Smash It Up! article they release.

All they're doing with this series now is predicting every character under the sun so that they can brag when characters get confirmed and they "predicted" it.

And.. come on. Capcom top 5? They won't add a Resident Evil character. Viewtiful Joe is a cancelled series. Has Dante even been on a Nintendo console? Who the hell is Zack and Wiki?

Where are Phoenix Wright and Bionic Commando? They have higher chances than most of the others combined.

Zack and Wiki is a game to be released in January I think. It's got extremely good previews so far, but to me, it just screams "Beyond Good and Evil". Will be a game that gets great reviews from everyone who plays it, but few people are going to actually play it.

Below Boshi in the same place where they made their assertion that there will be plenty of third party characters, they said he was discussed in another issue and were not going to bring him up again.

Okay, I'm just going to call this wishful thinking on the part of IGN. From what I've heard in their podcast and just seen in their articles in general, they seem to be completely focused on third parties.

If I remember correctly, when asked about what characters Matt (I know he didn't write this article) expected to see, he gave a list of like ten characters, only one of which was Nintendo owned. And this also seems to be the opinion of the rest of the IGN staff (Bozon seems the most reasonable, but even he list almost half third party characters). I'm pretty sure they just generally believe there will be a lot of 3rd parties.

And like several other people have said here, yes I do like IGN, but I think when it comes to this subject they really can't be trusted.
