Stress = Mistakes

I've been thinking, stress is my mortal enemy in smash. I stress when I'm put in tight situations or when I make a mistake. When I stress I start making even bigger mistakes. We need to discuss how we manage our stress as olimar when put in stressful situations. I believe that if you can manage your stress as you give a 100% effort your chances to win drastically raise.

Post what creates stress for you when playing olimar. The point of this thread is to have everyone and myself give advice on managing stress to maintain top performance.
I'll start with my problems

When I'm above my opponent, no matter who it is, I feel like I have no/little control and I must land quickly. What do you do when your in this situation? What do you read from your opponent to play off of in this situation? This is a continuous problem for me

I can kind of see that being the case, when above the opponent. I seem to have problems landing against opponents, since Olimar can be really vulnerable when landing (it's the only reason we don't **** DDD as hard as we should). So I've had to focus on mixing up landings as much as possible. I usually try to save my second jump so, when I realize my opponent's plan for punishment, I can react accordingly. Just try to fake them out. That way instead of feeling helpless, it seems I still have a chance when landing and can trick my opponent into thinking i'm in more of a helpless state than I am.

But all in all, it's a bad situation for Olimar :/

As for me, what causes me the most stress is when I just can't seem to get that kill @_@ I sometimes get into a more aggressive mindset when I can't get a kill and start looking for the opportunities instead of letting them appear before me, like they will. But yeah, when I calm down, the opportunities usually show themselves.

Interesting thread idea, btw.

Thanks for the advice! :D It helped, i just need to get really tricky and make myself seem more helpless than I really am.

But alright as for not being able to get that kill. I use to have a big problem with that but I don't now so I can help. Really what most opponents are doing is playing as safe as possible during this situation, so going agro really hurts here. What I like to imagine it as is I try to find a healthy mix between aiming to not get hit but still remembering the kill needs to happen. Basically I believe that if you cant get hit, the situation can't get any worse. A bonus thing is about olimar is that with time a purple toss will come along and give you an opening for the kill.

I get really stressed out by projectiles :( Falco's lasers especially, but really any projectile, when in the right hands, just starts to get me frustrated :/

These seem to me to be a lot of limiting beliefs, which the best case is to ignore what you are currently thinking and focus on being efficient. When there is a problem, I find it useful to break the game down to layers and options. When you specifically worry or focus on a certain aspect of the game during a match, you are taking away layers of your play style. Less layers yields playing more predictable which initiates the limiting belief.

The most frustering thing is landing the final blow when the opponent is high. A couple times it was a close match all the way up to 120%, I die, and get overly aggressive and end up at 50% before I finally land a killing blow. This happens every so often, but I realize patience will cure this.

Another thing is sometimes my bthrow with a blue pikmin doesn't go as far as it should, is the Pikmin maybe turned around or something so the bthrow is really a fthrow?

If your opponent just holds up it cuts the KB of blue back-throw a lot.

Like Fino said, DI has a large affect on the trajectory, so when going for a kill throw be sure to throw immediately after the grab. You also may be dealing with a staled bthrow. Brawl keeps a list of the last nine moves you used, and weakens them. The more you use a move, the weaker it becomes. So if you bthrow someone but they don't die, and attempt to do so again before using nine other moves, your bthrow will see a reduction in power.

Yeah, either buffer the throw like vocal mentioned... or start pummeling so they mash out. When they are mashing throw because you have a 3/4 chance they will DI incorrectly.

Being juggled when both me and my foe are at high damage always terrifies me, since I need to both get back onto the ground and get off a finisher. Plus, I end up messing up with which Pikmin I use for moves, like using a white for FAirs or grabbing with purples. When this is the case, I usually just concentrate on making contact with the ground before I try to land any attacks, which works well enough.

Oh, I also get terribly stressed when I end up with only white and yellow Pikmin. At that point its just a matter of camping like crazy and getting them killed off.

Three letters:

L

G

I hate wifi -_-

But yeah, lag throws me off more than anything, then I get to trying to anticipate where my opponent is gonna be, and I get all freaked out. Bad stuff.

I get stressed when someone coaches me while I'm playing or I can't remember something important about a match-up in the middle of a game. D:

I get stressed when people cheer/coach on my opponent. In the reverse I do a hell of a lot better when I have Crash talkin **** at my opponent for me throughout the match.

@kirbyyoshi - I hate lag as well. Best thing to do is to not think about it, the more you focus on the lag the more you start to not focus on the match.

@ coud - Tell whoever is coaching you that it's actually distracting. Or just ignore them. sometimes I'll get people I dont really know coaching me, and I have to ignore them. As for not remembering something, honestly just try to not dwell on it right then, play the game the best way you currently know how.

@ hilt - If they have a coach that means your doing well, if they start to win, do what you'd normally do, adapt. Try not to imagine them having a coach.

It's seriously as easy as ignoring them. I used to have the same problem, just step away - stop being aggro / stupid to prove the other people wrong, go camp, take a deep breath, and consciously think about what you need to be doing in the MU to win.

*whistles*...

I'll take every advantage I can get. It's like saying people who don't use grab are lower than you if they have to use things outside of attacks. It's part of the game, and if I can take advantage of someone's state of mind or mentality - knowing it doesn't work on me - then I'll do it. Even if it doesn't... banter during a match is one of the best things *looks at gn3s* :p
