Starting Brawl without the dang WiiMote

I've searched everywhere but haven't found a solution to this!

Is it possible to hack the Wii interface menu so I can turn on the Wii and start brawl without having to use the WiiMote and sensor bar? I know there's an analog stick on the Guitar Hero controller just for this purpose....it allows you to move the hand on the wii menu to start the game without using a different controller. Can we hack the menu to allow the game cube controller to do this?

I know that a common response to this would be to stop being so **** lazy and deal with it, but I'm a college student and am constantly moving my Wii around, whether it's to a friend's room, to a party, or sneaking into the lecture hall at night which has a huge movie theater sized projector screen and sound system. It's just so **** inconvenient to coil up the sensor bar and lug it around with the wii mote, JUST so I can click on "start" and never touch it again. I've been to large tourneys where people have to go hunting around for a wii mote just to start their game back up. One tourney I went to even had some idiot press the power button on a wii mote to play on a different system which happened to TURN OFF the system I was on, IN THE MIDDLE OF A SET, but luckily we were only on the stage select screen.

With all the tweaks I've seen it seems like it should be possible to find a simple solution to this. It would be extremely convenient if we could hack the wii to make it boot directly into the game upon powering on (you can still hit the home button if you need to access the menu later).

Sorry if this has been discussed before but I've searched hard and haven't found any answers.

Yes, I agree. It is extremely annoying to use the wiimote. I'm not sure if there even IS a hack. But, knowing the people of the internet, I really think there is one out there, somewhere.

If you booted Brawl up through the HBC, it would eliminate the part past pressing start...(Seeing as you can navigate it with the D-pad of the GCC) Really though, it would be conveniant to get rid of the whole process. You could always use the GH controller, sure it's somewhat cumbersome but that's a small price to pay for screwing around with the Wiimote. It'd be cool to find a way though...

That or use a Classic Controller, which I'm sure some people use.

I don't really care about the Wiimote process, what I do care about though is the condition of my rechargable batteries.

I always take out the batteries of the Wiimote because I want to save the energy. Now, if the batteries would be empty sometime anyway, it wouldn't matter, but I unfortunately had to trash a pair of almost new rechargables because the battery mounting of the Wiimote - especially those coils - scratches the mantle of the battery and literally rips it apart. I was able to dismantle one of those broken batteries because of how much the Wiimote destroyed them. And before you ask: No, except for the recharger, which doesn't even have the chance to do something like this to my batteries, I didn't use them for something else.

And rechargables aren't that cheap y'know. >_>

If the Wii is modded and can read burned discs, you can patch the ISO to autoboot into the game, skipping the Wii Menu. There's a certain flag on the header that you patch. This is how a lot of demo unit discs work. They skip the Wii menu.

Now, I've never used Gecko OS so don't take my word on how I think this could possibly work.

Install preloader on to your Wii so when you boot your Wii up, the preloader screen will show. I'm pretty sure you can use a GCN Controller d-pad with preloader so no wiimote is needed so far.

Next, have your Gecko OS dol file as a boot.dol in the front of your SD card. This will allow you to boot Gecko OS through preloader. Still no wiimote needed

Gecko OS loads, enable ocarina through it, and boot brawl. This is the only step I'm iffy about because I'm not quite too sure if Gecko OS has GCN Controller support for its menus. If it does, this way should be flawless and quite quick.

EDIT: I guess I need to start reading some things around here. You never mentioned anything about brawl+, correct? So if you don't plan on using brawl+, then this is really easy. Just install a thing called "starfall" and you should be able to boot straight to Wii games by simply holding Y when booting your Wii.

That is, if you want to make any softmods to your Wii. If not, looks like you'll be carrying around that wiimote and censor bar for a while.

does that work for gamecube games too? **** it'd be nice to burn a copy of melee that would just boot straight into game. would speed up transition from brawl > melee at my tourneys by a **** ton.

Hook up a Classic Controller and you won't need the sensor bar.
You still need the Wiimote. I wish hackers would do this because honestly, I've rarely used the Wiimote and have no battery recharger so I have to take out the batteries once I get into HBC.

Wouldn't it just be the HBC? That's what it seems like he was saying.

Gecko OS has GCN controller support. I use the preloader to start up Brawl+ without my Wii remote all the time.
He's saying that once you start up the HBC and go to GeckoOS, you can navigate with the GCC. When you go to use GeckoOS, you start the game though it, so I'm pretty sure that's what he meant.

Really, I'm just astonished that Nintendo has never made an update to allow the GCN controller to navigate the Wii menu. The Guitar Hero controller and Classic Controller can do it, why do I have to get up to go grab the Wiimote if I have a GCN controller PLUGGED IN!?

It's so easy... but they just won't do it. In fact, this was the first thing I thought they would update when I first got my Wii.

Get the preloader at http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/preloader . make sure to read the instructions. You will need to have system menu 3.2. the password is

H (home button)
A button
R right on the D-pad
D down on the D-pad
L left on the D-pad
U up on the D-pad
M (Minus button)
P (Plus button)

If you have any system menu later than 3.2 downgrade as soon as you can 3.2 is the best firmware for homebrew.

Yeah it's so annoying I'm always out of batteries and I don't have the censor bar in. Sigh I just want to use a GC controller.

I use the Preloader to autoboot into the HBC. But I think-- no wait. I KNOW you can autoboot into GeckoOS. Also, I also know you can autoboot into the game, but we all want our GeckoOS fix, amirite?
