CHAPTER 9: PART 3

After Adeline had painted up some very warm clothes for everyone (it took a few hours) Ness and his party were ready to escort Feya back to her village. As they trudged through the snow, Ness had to bury his face in his parka to avoid frostbite. Everyone else was doing the same, and even Fox had retreated into the warmth of his parka. However, the parkas that Adeline had painted were not actually true material, and therefore did not offer the same protection that a real snowsuit would. Ness still felt freezing, but they made all the difference.

Ness: (above the blizzard) WE’VE BEEN WALKING HALF A DAY, ARE YOU SURE YOU AREN’T LOST, FEYA?

Feya turned and warned him not to shout in case he bring down an avalanche. Ness was getting grumpy.

Ness: how much longer, then!?

Feya: what? I can’t hear you over the blizzard!

Ness: ARE WE THERE YET??

Feya: not so loud! You’ll…

Ness: I know, I know…I’ll bring down an avalanche.

Feya: WHAT?

Ness: (walks right up close to Feya) Are. We. There. Yet. ?

Feya: no! we’re not. I’d say it’s still another day’s walk from here.

Fox: Auuhh!!!

Paula: no WAY!

Jeff: my feet are numb through these shoes. And it’s not as if there’s any sights to see, this stupid blizzard obscures everything! When’s it going to stop?

Feya looked away. She seemed to be staring into the swirling snow, her eyes scanning warily across the frozen wasteland that stretched before them.

Feya: there is a shortcut nearby, but none of us have ever dared to venture through.

Ness: well you’ve got us here to protect you, so why don’t you take that route?

Feya: I wouldn’t want to put you in danger…

Ness: danger, schmanger! I laugh in the face of danger! WAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!

Ness’s laugh echoed across Ice Mountain. It was followed by a loud rumbling and an almost instant avalanche that buried them all up to their necks in freezing snow.

Feya: what did I say about yelling, laughing, making loud noises or blowing your nose?

Ness gave Feya a dirty look. The kura-hani had jumped the avalanche and was standing on the now-settled snow, completely dry.

Fox: g-g-get us out of h-here!

Ness: yeah! It’s cold! A-AAh---AAAAAH….AH-CHOOO!!!

Ness’s sneeze dislodged another pile of snow which rumbled down the hill and settled on top of the other one, burying everyone completely. Feya eventually dug them all out, but by the time that happened, it was already dark, and the blizzard still hadn’t stopped. As everyone sat in a cave, warming their frozen hands by the fire, Feya began talking about the blizzard.

Feya: this blizzard started not long ago, and it hasn’t stopped since it appeared. No blizzard we have ever seen has lasted so long without waning. There must be supernatural forces at work, but even our elders can’t find the cause. We believe it may have something to do with angry spirits in the winds.

Ness found it hard to believe that this blizzard was the cause of spirits. There was something malicious about this blizzard. It seemed to have something personal against everyone and everything, and spirits usually didn’t hold powerful grudges. Especially wind spirits.

The next morning, Feya led Ness and friends down a steep snowy hill that seemed to fall into a sort of valley. Ness noticed Feya was intense and on edge. He guessed that this must be a dangerous zone. Sure enough, after some more trekking, the group was jumped by a gang of polar bears and their fearsome pink shorts. Ness and the others beat them off, leaving them unconscious in the snow. Feya was impressed.

Feya: you are very strong. You didn’t even use your powers to defeat them!

Ness: why do they wear pink shorts? How can they stand the cold?

Feya: bandit polar bears like to show their toughness by wearing just shorts in this extreme cold. They try to intimidate their victims that way. Other tribes wear different coloured shorts. Usually, the polar bears get along with us, but recently they’ve started becoming more and more warlike. It’s confusing.

Ness glanced at Fox. Fox nodded. They both had the same thoughts. The last Dark Missionary must be positioned on Ice Mountain.

Paula: this place must be lovely when there’s no blizzards…

Feya: hm. Although you can’t see them now, beautiful natural ice pillars dot the landscape and can be seen from miles away. Some of them take extraordinary shapes. We kura-hani can extract spirits from them to use in our magic.

Ness tried to show interest, but the blizzard was so annoying that he couldn’t even focus his mind. Suddenly, Feya stiffened and drew her clear dagger, growling softly under her breath.

Feya: enemies approach!

Ness, Fox, Paula, Poo and Jeff all drew their weapons. Adeline quickly flipped out her easel and tried to paint something, but her paints had frozen stiff.

Adeline: whoops…you guys are going to have to do this without me, O.K?

Ness: sure.

There was silence as Ness peered through the swirling snow. He could just make out two shapes coming towards them. Upon catching sight of him and his friends, the two figures also drew weapons that Ness couldn’t make out the shape of. The strange pair began advancing cautiously towards him.

Paula: whooo, scairy!

G&W: don’t talk, Paula.

Finally, after a long standoff, the two figures entered Ness’s visibility, and as soon as he saw who it was, he let out a sigh of relief, and Fox laughed. The two figures looked equally surprised as they recognized Ness and his friends.

Popo: Ness? What are you doing here?

Nana: he’s a dimension traveler, brother. He’s psychic.

Popo: I know that, sweet, pretty sister of mine. But why is he here?

Nana: ask him, my powerful, strong, biological twin brother.

Popo: I am not your twin brother. I am two seconds older than you.

Nana: you are not.

Popo: yes I am.

Nana: you are n…

Ness: it’s the Ice Climbers! Hey guys! We finally found you!

Everybody was happy to see the Ice Climbers…except Feya, who looked terrified.

Feya: T-T-T…They…No! You…It can’t be YOU!! NESS!! NESS, HELP! FIGHT THEM!

Feya’s frantic squawking got the Ice Climber’s attention. Popo gasped and heaved his mallet up onto his shoulder.

Popo: kura-hani! Look sister! A kura-hani!

Nana: huaaaaah!! Stand by, brother, I’ll slay it!

Popo: you can have what’s left!

Nana: let’s kill it together!

Popo: good idea, brainy and highly intelligent sister who is two seconds younger than me.

Nana: am not.

Popo: are too.

The Ice Climbers charged past Ness and swung their mallets at Feya, but the ermine was too agile. She nipped to the side and stood bristling with her fangs bared. The Ice Climbers were about to launch into a team attack when Ness jumped in between them and Feya with his bat drawn.

Ness: whoa, whoa, WHOA!! What is going on here? Why are you attacking Feya?

Nana: stay out of this, Ness! The kura-hani scum must die!

Popo: kill the filthy vermin!

Ness: HOLD IT! Don’t take another step towards her, or I’ll have to fight you both. Now Feya, what’s going on here? Why are the Ice Climbers attacking you.

Feya was crouched down in what appeared to be a fighting stance. She was shaking with fear and looked extremely desperate and dangerous. She spoke without taking her eyes off the Ice Climbers.

Feya: do you know these two, Ness? They are killers! These two warriors hunt and slay kura-hani for a living! They were responsible for the death of an entire tribe!

Popo: your tongue won’t save you, sly one! I don’t know how you got Ness to trust you, but he won’t stop me from cracking your wicked skull!

Nana: Ness! Step aside; we must destroy this slimy thief!

Ness aimed his mind at Popo and blasted him and Nana with a PSI paralysis d. Both Ice Climbers fell twitching into the snow.

Popo: Ness…ugh…you traitor!

Nana: you’re all traitors!

Popo: big ones!

Ness: now let’s talk this over sensibly like grown ups, right? Why do you want to kill Feya?

Popo: you’re a meddling hole, Ness!

Ness: I asked you a question!

Popo was silent for a few seconds before bursting into speech.

Popo: all kura-hani are villains! They don’t deserve to live!

Feya: what have we done to make you hate us so?

Popo: vermin! You’re lucky Ness and his friends were here, otherwise we would have…

Ness: oi! Why do you want to kill Feya, answer me? What’s she done to you?

Nana: kura-hani are thieves, traitors and cowards!

Popo: they’re sneaky, sly, deceivers!

Nana: they’ll stab you in the back as soon as you turn around!

Popo: they curse our crops and make them useless!

Feya: we do no such thing!

Popo: liar! The kura-hani practice every form of treachery under the sun!

Ness: well from what I’ve seen so far, Feya here has done nothing but good things for us. She saved Fox’s life!

Popo sneered. He tried to roll over, but didn’t manage.

Popo: the kura-hani try to appear honest by acting as healers. It’s a trick to make you trust them.

Fox: what do you mean, “A trick?” Has it ever occurred to you that the kura-hani may actually be trying to earn an honest living with their healing powers?

Nana: there’s no such thing as an honest kura-hani!

Ness shook his head. He had no idea that the Ice Climbers were so bloodthirsty.

Popo: as heroes, it is our job to vanquish evil, and defend the good folk from villains like the kura-hani! Right, oh cute little paralyzed sister of mine?

Nana: you bet, cool, heroic brother.

One thing that Ness found so unnerving about the Ice Climbers was the way they spoke. They seemed to drone on and on without any emotion, all the while staring with eyes that rarely blinked.

Feya: you don’t defend your people from us, you actively come out of your territory and hunt us down, even when we’re minding our own business! After being captured and killed so many times, do you honestly think any kura-hani would go within five miles of your kind? Years ago, we may have stolen from and deceived the Mountan People, but we live in fear of you now. We try to hide from you. It’s the first thing we teach our young!

Popo: we will wipe you all out!

Ness was getting sick of Popo and Nana’s stubbornness. From what he’d heard it was easy enough to see that the kura-hani was a struggling race, persecuted out of fear. Although they had attempted to make peace with the Mountain People, they were hated for the sake of hatred. The Mountain People didn’t want to trust them.

Ness: Popo, Nana, I’m here to help you destroy the great evil that’s positioned in your dimension. You can’t return to the Academy by yourselves because of a stuff-up by Master hand. I’m on a journey to fix this problem, and I’ll need a special item from this dimension. Now I know that you won’t be able to find the great evil by yourselves and that you’ll need me to track it. We’ll need your help too if we’re going to succeed. Now this is how it goes…Feya here is our friend, and one of our allies. If you are going to join us, you’re going to have to put your differences aside and team up with her, do you understand?

Popo: never!

Ness: well then I hope you enjoy squirming here in the snow, because I’m not going to heal your paralysis until you agree.

Popo looked at Feya with hatred so intense it could have melted all the ice in sight. He huffed and looked away from her with an indignant expression on his face.

Popo: fine, I’ll spare that kura-hani’s life, but if she so much as looks at me wrong, I’ll spill her brains across the snow!

Nana: I second what my awesome brother just said.

Feya was very unhappy with the idea.

Feya: no! You’ll lead them back to my village! They’ll kill everyone, Ness! You said you’d protect me from…

Ness: Feya, I know the Ice Climbers much better than you. They may be scary, but they’re honorable. If I make them swear they won’t harm your people, then they won’t do it, right guys?

Popo: huh. Yes, alright.

Ness: if you try anything, I’ll paralyze you again.

Nana: yeah, yeah…

And so Ness, his friends, the Ice Climbers and Feya trudged through the blizzard until they finally came to a strange white village which was almost invisible in the snow. Feya turned warily to Ness and pleaded at him with her eyes, urging him to keep the Ice Climbers in check. The Ice climbers were indignantly standing side by side, not saying a word as everyone gasped and goggled at the spectacle before them.

Paula: WhOw!!

Fox: I’ve never seen anything like this!

G&W: wow!

Adeline: cool!

Jeff: it is cool!

Poo: RICE!!

The kura-hani village seemed to slip in and out of visibility. However, as they got closer, Ness noticed it becoming much easier to see. Feya started to explain, as if reading his thoughts.

Feya: there is a protective seal covering our village. From a distance, it blends the buildings and people into the snow, making it very difficult for our enemies to see us.

Popo smirked.

Popo: if they don’t know what they’re looking for, right sister?

Nana: very right, sharp eyed and all-seeing brother of mine.

Ness: hey! You behave yourselves once we get there. Once the villagers see you, there’s going to be mass panic and a lot of explaining to do. I want you to show that you don’t mean these people any harm.

The Ice Climbers nodded and stowed their mallets. As Ness and his charge approached the village, he noticed a small group of grey-clad figures standing in their path. Ness raised his arms to show he was not dangerous, and Feya waved to them.

Feya: they’ve seen me. This is probably a welcome party. I wonder if my father is amongst them?

However, when everyone got closer, the welcome party started to turn hostile. Ness found himself surrounded by wary, frightened kura-hani warriors. Luckily, Feya managed to calm them all down before anyone got hurt.

Feya: there’s no need to be alarmed. These people are my friends, and they offered me protection on my way back to the village. They are dimension travelers, and some of them know powerful magic that I want to show the elders.

One of the warriors, a tall human wielding a set of hunter’s knives stepped forward and ushered Feya out of the way. He stared into Ness’s eyes, keeping the weapons drawn. Ness guessed he must have been a leader of some sort.

???: If Feya trusts you, then you must mean us no harm. However, it would be unwise to allow you to enter our village without proof that you won’t lead our enemies to us…

Suddenly, one of the other warriors began screaming.

Kura-hani #1: ICE CLIMBERS!! LOOK! IT’S THE ICE CLIMBERS!! WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!

These words were followed by an uproar as the kura-hani darted to and fro, unsure whether to fight or run. Ness had to shout at the top of his lungs to get their attention.

Ness: QUIET!! THE ICE CLIMBERS ARE WITH US, AND THEY WON’T HURT YOU, YOU HAVE MY WORD!!

The human with the knives silenced the others with a wave of his hand.

???: impossible! The Ice Climbers are cruel, heartless killers. You befriended Feya so you could follow her to our village and exterminate us!

Popo: If we wanted to kill you, then half of you would already be dead.

Nana: listen to my hunky brother, scum! You’re lucky Ness made us swear not to harm any of you kura-hani! For the time being, anyway.

Feya: it’s true, Iho. Ness and his friends are stronger than the Ice Climbers! If they harm any of use, Ness can defeat them.

Popo: NESS IS NOT STRONGER THAN ME AND MY GORGEOUS AND HIGHLY ATTRACTIVE SISTER! WE COULD DEFEAT HIM IN A FAIR BATTLE!!

Ness: we’re not in the Academy of Smash now, Popo. Our attacks are no longer balanced, and I’m afraid that I’m much more powerful than both of you. Sorry, that’s how it is.

Popo: PSI is stupid!

Nana: down with PSI!

Ness: (turning to Iho.) Anyway, we were wondering if we could take your hospitality for a little while? Me and my friends are pretty hungry and cold. And we have a long journey ahead of us.

Iho looked away from the Ice Climbers and frowned at Ness.

Iho: If Feya trusts you, then all is well. Please wait outside for just a few minutes, I must warn our people not to be alarmed by your presence.

After a short wait, Ness and friends were admitted entry to the mystifying kura-hani village. Kura-hani in their gray costumes stood by the snow-white houses, watching silently as the heroes walked through the village, taking in the amazing sight. Ness occasionally caught sight of young kura-hani warriors practicing their spells and seals in small groups, and he passed a forge where a blacksmith was at work making strange weapons.

Ness: this is amazing! Can you feel the spiritual energy of this place, Paula?

Paula: wow! It sends shivers down my spine!

Poo: incredible. This is truly a place of intense magical concentration. It’s nothing like I’ve ever felt before…

Finally, they arrived at a place that looked like a sort of shrine. A palace of ice built into the side of a frozen mountain. Ness stared up at the structure with awe.

Feya: this is a temple we built behind our village as a lure for ice spirits. It’s warm inside, so you may sleep there tonight. However, do not cause any damage to the stalactites that hang from the roof, because doing so may drive the spirits away. And we rely heavily on them for survival.

Fox: wow…

Jeff: I can’t think of anything else to say but wow! Such architecture! And all this without machines!

Ness: thanks Feya. That will do nicely. But there’s still a lot of daylight left, so let’s go meet the elders. I’m really looking forward to seeing the workings of spirit magi.

Feya: you should eat first.

Adeline: that won’t be necessary; I’ll just paint up some hot soup, and…

Ness: Adeline, all the food you paint comes out cold.

Adeline: pfeh! Philistines!

Soon the gang of heroes were all sitting down, enjoying a meal of fish chowder. Iho and several other kura-hani watched them carefully as they ate. Popo and Nana ungratefully spooned the chowder into their mouths without so much as commenting on its texture or quality. Ness and his friends, however, were full of compliments.

Fox: mmm! Yummy, yummy fish soup!

Paula: sooooop! *~*

G&W: soooooooooooooooop!

Adeline: it’s chowder, you guys.

Fox: eat up the yummy soup!

Ness: chowder…

Poo: (in very, very deep voice) PeA SooouUp…

Feya: no, chowder. I made this for you, is it nice?

Fox: it’s lovely! It would have been even better with some earthworms in it.

Feya: it’s way too cold for earthworms in this part of the world…

A sickening thought occurred to Ness. He put down his bowl of chowder and gasped loudly, drawing all the attention in the room to him.

Feya: what’s the matter, Ness?

Ness: does any of you have a map of this world?

Feya: …yes, I suppose we do, why’s that?

Ness: bring it here…now! This is urgent.

Feya ran out of the room and returned with a scroll. She placed it on the floor and opened it up to reveal the world map. Ness groaned.

Ness: look how BIG this world is!! We’re here!

Ness pointed to a tiny white patch at the top of the map, labeled ICE MOUNTAIN. Everyone stared at the map with disbelief.

Paula: but Ness…I thought you knew this dimension?

Ness: I’ve only visited it once before! I had no idea…wait, let me do another mental scan…

Ness placed his fingers on his temples and, after a few seconds, pointed to another point on the map.

Ness: I miscalculated earlier. Specll is there…in that place.

Paula: Brown Tann?

Fox: SIX continents away???

Ness swallowed. There was silence throughout the room as everyone let Ness’s discovery sink in.

Feya: what’s the matter, Ness?

Ness: we have a loooooooooooong journey ahead of us…
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Uh-oh! How is Ness going to cross six continents without PSI teleport? Why are the Ice Climbers so nasty/freaky? What are Specll and Pokey up to? Find out next update! CHEESE!!

YAY CHEESE!!! Great update. So they have to travel SIX CONTINENTS AWAY?! Maybe the kura-hani will use their magic to get there. It's so funny the way Popo and Nana speak. Also we get to learn more about them liking to kill them. Heh, the polar bears wearing Pink Shorts are the best.

hey, NessBounder! It's been a while, and there's a new chapter! Whoo!

Ness and Co. meet up with the Ice Climbers, but I was surprized at how crazy, bloodythirsty, and overall malicious they acted at the sight of Feya. Who knew that Nana and Popo could be so... like that? Their manner of speech was funny, and the Ice palace/temple thingy was pretty cool.
btw, I liked the comment about the Smash dimension balancing their attack powers. That's something most people don't take into account when comparing the characters themselves outside of Smash Bros. For those who never played EarthBound, I would like to say this: Ness and his main party (Jeff, Paula, and Poo) are probably some of the most powerful characters outside of the smash dimension, mostly because of the power of PSI, but also because of their teamwork and just plain high stats.

ahem, now that i've gotten that out of the way... 6 continents! Whoo! dang, that's a lot. one question though, why can't they use PSI teleport? I know it's probably because they've never been to those places in that dimension before, but then how did Ness get to other dimensions in the first place? Anyway, laters!

Hmm, good point about the travelling thing.
I think I'll make Paula explain in the next update how Ness's PSI teleport functions, right down to why he can visit any dimension he wants, but can't warp all over it unless he's stood in the place he wants to go. I'll also explain just how Ness got this dimension-travelling ability in the first place.

Oh, and if any of you see a new member called Squabbelino, then let me warn you, he's weirder than me and will probably be writing animal crossing fics. You have been warned.:p

CHAPTER 9: PART 4

The kura-hani elders were indeed impressed by Ness’s healing powers. They wore different costumes than the warriors, with long ice-blue blue robes. Ness demonstrated his lifeup power by inflicting a small cut to his arm and then healing it. After demonstrating all of his other non-attack abilities, and letting Paula demonstrate hers, the elders agreed to show Ness the workings of spirit magi.

Elder 1: your magic is indeed very powerful. I have no doubt that you also excel in offensive spells.

Elder 2: but spirit magi is a very subtle and gentle power, the few offensive spells we learn are not kinetically dangerous in the way yours are.

Elder 1: spirit magi does not directly effect anything physical, it cannot influence solid objects or manipulate space or time or matter, but it is cast directly at the soul of the target.

Ness: yet it’s a very versatile magic, there are a lot of things that can be done with it, more than any other type of magic. Actually, that’s the case with all magic in the magi category. Like earth magi for instance, which allows control of the growth of plants and allows the user to speak with and encourage the movement of inanimate objects. An earth mage can subtly influence a rock structure to fall apart so he can escape from pursuers. PSI warriors would simply blow the rock structure apart. In some ways, magi gives the user a lot more control than any other form of magic.

Elder 1: you are very wise. Yes, there are many tribes in this world who use different forms of magi…in fact, there are some I know of who use mana-powered magic. But your PSI is new to me.

Ness grew excited at the mention of mana-powered magic. Mana-magic was awesome to behold, but difficult to use. It was like a less reliable, turbo-charged version of PSI. Almost purely offensive, it was scary to see how fast mana-mages could blast down their targets and obliterate them. Ness had seen it in action, and it was hard not to be awed by the power of mana spells. However, it was a very, VERY linear and predictable form of magic and just about every spell needed to be charged first and had massive recoil time afterwards. Ness enjoyed his PSI better because of the vast array of tricks he could use. Mana mages had a few tricks, but most of their spells simply telegraphed themselves ominously and then detonated with ridiculous force. Any mage who didn’t know how to avoid or counter the spells of an enemy mana mage was as good as done for.
There were some forms of mana magic that traded power for speed and function, but to such an extent that they were somewhat weak but handy. If Ness remembered correctly, Zelda used fairy mana magic, which was one of those diluted forms that lacked power but could be cast without uttering any words and with considerable haste. Also, unlike PSI, mana-magic could be used over and over again without running out. It just had to be charged before the spell would work.

Ness: well PSI is very easy to use. It’s like mana magic only a bit weaker and much faster. And it runs on Psychic points. There are a few different versions of psychic-based magic, but I think PSI is one of the best.

The elders nodded understandingly.

Elder 2: there are no restrictions and limitations when using spirit magi. However, in order to perform any sort of spell, one must harvest spirits first. Usually, this is not hard, as there are spirits everywhere. But for certain more developed spells, only a few kinds of spirits will work and these have to be collected and stored before hand. We kura-hani rarely leave Ice Mountain without a few of the snow spirits found in the icicles of our temple.

Ness now understood how this new form of magi worked. Paula and Poo seemed to understand as well. Everyone else hadn’t a clue what Ness and the elders were talking about.

Feya: it’s getting late, Ness. You should probably start heading off to the temple now.

It was surprisingly warm inside the Temple of Ice. There was a carpet spread across the floor that Ness and his friends could sleep on. Feya accompanied them while they settled down.

Feya: my father wasn’t here to greet me…he must be off on the journey he said he wanted to go on. I hope he’s alright.

Ness: I’m just worried about our journey! Six continents! By the time we travel that distance, Specll and Pokey will be gone. I must admit, Edward Hemorrhoid’s dimension warping powers are much more developed than mine.

Fox: why can’t you just teleport us over to there, Ness?

Paula: Ness uses hyperspace to get around. After Giygas's defeat, Ness mastered hyperspace travel and learned how to travel to other dimensions. Since he's a seasoned dimension traveler, he's been almost everywhere. He's familiar with using hyperspace and can go to just about any dimension he wants to, as long as he knows it exists and how to get there. Once Ness has visited a dimension, he can return at will, so he spends a fair bit of his free time exploring hyperspace and stumbling into various dimensions. However, once he's landed in a new dimension, he cannot warp himself around that particular dimension unless he's traveled everywhere by other means, or has been told/seen the PSI co-ordinates.

Ness: and I can’t guess the co-ordinates or it won’t work. I’m afraid we’re going to have to do this the old-fashioned way…

Poo: oh well, I don’t care. The exercise will be good for my bunz of steel!

Adeline: good night everyone!

Ness: yeah, let’s sleep. Night.

Everyone: NIGHT, NESS!!

Soon, the sound of snoring was all that could be heard. This time, Fox wasn’t the only one curled up into a ball. Feya was the only one not asleep. She sat in the dim light of the chamber, communing with the spirits. Something stirred out of the corner of her eye. She turned to see the Ice Climber Nana stirring. The pink-clad Mountain person stared at her silently for what seemed ages before speaking in a quiet voice that startled Freya out of her meditational state.

Nana: don’t think you’re safe here, kura-hani. Once this is all over, me and my brother will return to this place and slaughter you all!

Feya: my tribe has done nothing to deserve such treatment. However, if you do come back here once Ness is gone, we will fight and defeat you.

Nana: we cannot be defeated by kura-hani weaklings. You are scum! A race without honor who use magic to cover up their lack of strength. We will return here, and when we do, you will die. I look forward to the day my mallet will find your skull, kura-hani! I look forward to breaking your bones, and I promise you, you will be alive to hear them crunching right until I snap your d*mn neck, and your screaming will echo around Ice Mountain, no, around the whole of the Land of Frozen Water.

With these words, the Ice Climber turned and went to sleep. Feya shuddered in the partial darkness, fearing for her life.

Feya: is there anything we can do to make peace with your kind?

Nana: die.

****************&&&&&&&&&&***********************

While Ness and his friends were sleeping in the cold, Specll and Pokey were somewhere very different.

Specll: ah, it’s so freaking HOT here!

Pokey: yeah, it is. Eddy, do something to cool us down.

Edward: AU! If I makES thA aiiiiUURR heRre cOOlder, then yoUl’wlll frEEz up ‘coS it’s Humid!\\\

Specll: he’s right, if he freezes the air to cool us down, the humidity will solidify. We need to find shelter from this blistering heat!

Luckily, after only a bit of walking, Specll sighted a town and had Edward Hemorrhoid teleport them there. It was a nice little town, filled with tropical delights and locals in tropical shirts. Pokey soon found a nice air-conditioned restaurant and sat down at the table.

Pokey: a stroke of luck, hey guys?

Specll: better than sunstroke.

Edward: HA hA! GoOod 1~!

Pokey: hmm, I have no idea where we are, but if this is where the Ice Climbers live, then I’ll eat my underpants.

Specll: oh, this air-conditioning is sooooo nice…There’s no way I want to go back out there in the heat. Why don’t we stay in here and ask the locals about this place? Who knows, perhaps we’ll find out about the special items…

Pokey: I’m way ahead of you, Spec. The greatest treasure in the Frigie system is the legendary squinting eggplant. That’s what we’re after, but I really have no idea where it is. Also, we have to check on the Dark Missionary that’s positioned in this world.

Specll: I wonder where Fox is now?

Pokey: hmph. Probably here already. Ness Is pretty stubborn, I’ll give him that much. He knows we’re here, but it’s obvious he can’t reach us.

Specll: I hope I never have to fight Fox. I really don’t want to hurt him.

Pokey: well you’re going to have to, because we’re going to fight sooner or later. What have you got to worry about? You’re practically invincible!

Specll: I don’t know, remember back at th…

Pokey: don’t bring that up. That guy was a freak from another reality zone. We’re talking about here and now. Fox can’t hurt you, Ness can’t hurt you. Right?

Specll dilated his pupils to slits. He furrowed his brow and stared past Pokey.

Specll: I still don’t know. I haven’t found a weakness in my shield yet. It strikes me as odd that I’ve been gifted with such a powerful weapon that nobody can stop me. There has to be a weakness, and I’m concerned…

Pokey: about what?

Specll: about the thought that my shield may have no weakness! What’s wrong with me? Why was I born with pink fur? Why do I have these incredible powers? It scares me, to think that I’m almost immortal.

Pokey: what’s so scary about that? I’d do anything to be almost immortal!

Specll: there has to be a consequence for using the rejoctor shield. Such protection simply can’t come free. I could be doing untold harm to my body right now, and I don’t even know it! I’m surprised I’ve never gotten Fenrir’s syndrome! I’m scared. I really am.

Pokey: you can’t be scared of your own powers! Look! Nothing happens when you use your shield! Watch.

Pokey picked up a salt shaker and threw it at Specll. Specll watched the object fly towards him, waiting for the familiar zapping noise.
However, it never came. Specll shouted in surprise as the salt shaker hit his nose.
Pokey just stared at Specll in disbelief.

Pokey: what tha? Wh…Where’s your shield!? It can’t be gone! Impossible!

Specll: give me that! (grabs a pepper shaker off Pokey) This isn’t happening. I can’t lose my shield!

Specll threw the shaker up into the air, and watched it fall. This time, a line of pink light blocked it, bouncing it to the side.

Pokey: then how come it didn’t deflect the salt shaker?

Specll: I don’t know…this is strange, I’ve never known my shield to do that before…but when you threw the salt shaker at me, I felt a strange feeling in my stomach…It was the same feeling as when that guy disabled my shield…

Pokey: perhaps you subconsciously turned it off?

Specll: I can’t turn off my rejector shield, idiot. Then it would simply be a reflector. It was something else.

Pokey noticed that Edward Hemorrhoid was drawing unnecessary attention to their table.

Pokey: come on, let’s get out of here.

Specll: yeah. It’s your turn to hold the bag this time.

As they walked out of the air-conditioning and out into the sweltering heat, Specll was thinking about his powers, and why his shield had failed to function. There was still a lot he didn’t know about his powers. Limelight of love was definitely safe, he’d never felt anything strange when using it. Fiery vulpine arrow strike left him feeling a little bit tired, but didn’t seem to hurt him at all. Specll knew that he could be hurt through the shield if an object warped it out of the way, but this never bothered him much. It took an incredible amount of force to bend the shield, and very few objects could get through it.
But limelight of love worried him as well. He knew that the more powerful variation, floodlight of love, drained him a fair bit, but limelight itself was almost faultless. Surely it had to have a weakness…Specll didn’t even know how it worked. He knew it put people to sleep, but why and how?
The only power Specll felt totally comfortable with was his laser claw ability.

Pokey: hm…let’s ask some people about the Ice Climbers. I’d expect them to be big heroes around here…hey, you! Yes, you, the guy with the tropical shirt! No, not you, him! Yes! That guy! Come over here!

A man in a tropical shirt and sunglasses came walking over to the trio. Pokey asked him if he knew anything about the Ice Climbers. The man thought to himself before replying.

Man: ah, you mean the Mountain People of the Land of Frozen Water! That’s six continents away, you guys are pretty darn lost if you’re looking for Mountain People here! They live at the base of Ice Mountain which is right at the top of the globe! They’re one of the last existing mountain tribes. We sometimes and I mean SOMETIMES get warriors from that area down here looking to trade. But apart from that, the Mountain People like to keep to themselves and their traditions.

Pokey: (to himself) ah, good…they won’t meddle with our plans. (out loud) Ah, I see. So do you happen to know where we can get a look at the legendary squinting eggplant?

Man: the squinting eggplant? Isn’t that held in Riceland? That’s uh…another country, look, you should go check out some sort of map, I’m not too good with geography.

Pokey watched the man go away and turned to Specll.

Pokey: Riceland, remember that. Let’s find a map and then we can figure out where that is, and then we can get Eddie to warp us there.

Unfortunately, before Pokey could say anything else, a bunch of tropical dancers in grass skirts picked him up and ran off with him. Specll was so surprised that he didn’t know what to do.

Specll: what the?

Pokey: AAAH! LET GO OF ME!

Specll and Edward Hemorrhoid followed the dancers until they came to a shrine-like area, surrounded by tourists taking photos. The dancers ran inside the shrine where a loud honking noise sounded, and not five seconds later, Pokey emerged covered from head to toe in glitter and fruit. The tourists cheered.

Specll: did you see that, Ed?

Edward: I don’t’S Know WHaTT to ThAnk!

Pokey looked very upset.

Pokey: WHAT IN THE NAME OF DONUTS IS GOIN’ ON HERE?! He screamed, wiping the fruit from his eyes. The hula dancers came out of the temple and hung a flower chain over his neck.

Dancer 1: Alo-ha! You have been chosen for the Grand Tropical Harvest Festival queen! As queen, you have been crowned with the prize winning fruit basket from the Annual Fruit Basket Holiday! Congratulations!

Pokey: BUT I DON’T WANNA BE THE HARVEST QUEEN!!

Dancer 2: well sorry, but you’re the fattest person we could find. And it’s tradition!

Specll couldn’t help but laugh. Pokey noticed him laughing and pulled a face.

Pokey: aren’t you going to do something!?

Specll: come on, Pokey! Play along! You’re the Harvest queen…ha ha ha! There’s no harm in taking part in a major festival or two. I think we deserve a little break, anyway!

Edward: Ya! Yo looKs FunnO1!

Pokey: I am SO going to soil myself if you don’t…

Pokey didn’t get to finish his sentence. The hula dancers handed him a scepter and a giant pineapple. To Pokey’s dismay, he was then photographed by hundreds of tourists before being taken back into the temple and egged (to bring fertility to the soil) dipped in olive oil (to bring economic fortune to the country) and rolled in cookie crumbs before being placed between two large pieces of bread and paraded outside (just for the heck of it.) The only one who wasn’t enjoying himself was Pokey.

Specll: I haven’t had this much fun since…

He was about to say “Since Fox accidentally shot the Cornarian New Year’s balloon that one time…” but stopped. Specll listened to the festive music and the complaints of Pokey, and dreaded the day when he would have to engage Fox in combat.
He knew that Fox wouldn’t stand a chance, but deep within the subconscious realms of his mind, Specll secretly wished that his half brother would find a way to defeat him.

Great update. That explains a lot with the magic stuff and teleporting. Now I'm stuck with the question on what type of magic/PSI/or whatever Mewtwo has. It's also nice to see Specll worrying about his powers having a weakness like the time...

Pokey: Don't say it.

Ok...anyways it's good to see that he might have a weakness like throwing a lot of salt shakers. This was a great update and I am still wondering if this fic will ever have the Space Pirates of the Metroid Universe.

neat-o! that was a nice explanatory chapter for everything. Ok, so we've got three basic types of magic/psychic powers:

Magi: A subtle, versatile magic that gives an advanced user a lot of control when used properly. Several sub catagories such as earth, spirit, fire (I'm guessing on that one), etc... Unlimited use, but spirit magi requires spirits, and advanced techniques require rare spirits, usually found in only a few places. Spirit magi also has a lot of emphasis on effect/healing spells and less on offensive spells.

Mana: Veeeery powerful magic, but slow to use. Hard to control, and slightly unreliable. Unlimited use; spells need only to be charged before hand, which can take a bit of time. A relatively simple magic, it's mostly focused on attacks. A few variations, e.g. Zelda's Fairy-magi, which is quick to charge and use, but more "handy" than useful. If one can neither dodge, block, or counter attacks from a Mana using opponant, then you've pretty much lost already.

PSI: In Ness's opinion, the best/most well balanced discussed so far. Based on the power of the mind (psychic power), it runs on Psychic Points, which can be regenerated in many ways. Rest is probably the main one Ness is using throughout this fic, but there's also certain foods (from EarthBound a PSI caramel would replenish 20 PP), and the variation of PSI magnet from EarthBound would, instead of restoring health from energy attacks as it does in SSBM, steal PP from enemies at no cost. Very versatile, PSI has a pretty even balace of attack and effect/healing powers. Very powerful, almost as much as Mana, but a LOT quicker. Usually the caster only needs to say the name of the spell. According to Ness, there are other psychic based powers, but he prefers PSI over them all.

BTW, does Ness have basic telekinesis, i.e., can he pick up and move things with his mind? There was some evidence pointing to this in the game EarthBound itself, but it was never an active in-game option.

anyway, Nana's threat was kinda unsettling. I guess Ness'll have to do something about this before he leaves, but what? Take the Ice-Climbers with him? Make some kinda treaty between these two peoples? Eh... stuff.

Specll's worrying about his powers and their weakness is interesting. I'd never thought about that. Especially the rejector sheild. Specll's reference to that feeling was about when he was fighting Kirby, right? It was so long ago, though.... argh. Oh well. anyway, Pokey's fiasco with the festival provided some laughs at just the right moment. lol. I'll cya later then, i guess. bye!

The reference was to Kiroby or GSK, not Kirby. It was when we did a short crossover chapter or part. Anyways I still can't figure out what Mewtwo's magic is. Magi, Mana, PSI, or another Ness didn't mention. It isn't slow and there are plenty of offensive moves. Maybe PSI but Mewtwo's moves are different, then again the moves use PP but it's Power Points instead of Psychic Points.

Well I've got so much homework, but I've still managed one update this weekend. Darn homework. I want to start a new fic about Wario Ware, but I don't have time.

(when I do, it's going to be the funnyest fanfic I've ever written. And a bit more "adult" than this one in terms of humour.)

CHAPTER 9: PART 5

Contrast sat in the room, his arms folded across his chest. They’d thrown him in there for quite some time now, and he was getting sick of waiting.
At least he was not bored. The strange red-walled room seemed to recall images in his head. Mostly of the Pokemon he’d killed through his lifetime. It replayed the same deaths over and over again, each time in more detail. Contrast could see the expressions on his defeated foe’s faces seconds before his claws penetrated their flesh. He could see into their minds and read their thoughts.
“This can’t be happening!”
“It’s over!”
“Don’t kill me!”
“oh NO!!”
Contrast sat there as the red fog drifted around him and contemplated these images flashing before his eyes. Was Deoxes trying to frighten him with the past? If so, it wasn’t working. Contrast did not regret anything he’d done.

Contrast: this is getting tedious. Whatever you’re trying to do, it’s not working.

The fog had gotten thicker and the deaths persistently continued to flash before his eyes. But he noticed something was changing. The deaths were getting slower, almost in slow motion. Contrast could see every detail, every twitch, every spasm and read every minor thought in his victim’s minds.

Contrast: If you’re trying to make me feel bad about all the Pokemon I’ve killed, then let me tell you, I regret nothing!

Of course, nobody replied. Contrast felt the fog get thicker. The room was trying to scare him. “Well let it try!” he thought to himself, taking a more comfortable position.

Ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff88888888888888888888888

Sylph just happened to be passing the red room when she felt curious as to Contrast’s condition. He would probably be near insanity by now, but something in her mind told her to check on him.
Sylph entered the control room and looked at the glass. The red fog was so thick that she couldn’t even see the prisoner.

Sylph: hmf. Why should I bother? I don’t want to know what that Keclion is suffering about in there…

But in truth, she did. Sylph tried to use her mind to enter the room and see Contrast, but she couldn’t reach through the wall, as it was made of steel which was one substance that did not channel psychic power.
Sylph looked around. An object on the panel caught her eye. It was a mind reader. One of those instruments Spiteshade had used to spy on the prisoners of the red room.
Sylph slowly picked up the mind reader and placed it over her eyes. She focused the target through the glass and into the red fog until her mind met with Contrast’s.

It was like a nightmare. The Kecleon was a killer, hacking and slashing his way through his life. Dying Pokemon fell around him like autumn leaves. But something else was happening. The red room seemed to be increasing with power over time, something Sylph had never seen it do before. She removed the mind reader and blinked away the images that she’d just seen.
Why was the red room increasing with power? Sylph wanted to know how this sinister device worked. She wanted to fuse her mind with Contrast’s and see just what he thought about his past, but to do that, she would have to open the door.
And that was something she was not prepared to do.

Sylph: Keshi…Keshi can read minds better than me! I’ll go find him, I’ve got to know the secret behind this torture chamber!

#########$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$############33

Contrast gritted his fangs. He had been sitting in the thickening fog for what seemed like eternity. The images flashing before his eyes were no longer even real events from his past. The room was trying to scare him, that was for sure. It continued to reply his killings, but now it was warping them. Now Contrast’s victims cried out in ways they hadn’t. Their voices were distorted. Their bodies bent in hideous ways with every thrust of his claws. But Contrast was not shaken. He smiled to himself. He could not be defeated by a room.

The fog intensified, and the images changed. The room was getting frustrated and the killings no longer even made sense. Disturbing images flashed past contrast’s mind that had nothing to do with him. He saw places of his childhood covered in a strange red liquid that for some reason filled him with disgust. A pale-furred Ninetales stared up at him before its face disappeared, transforming into a pulsating growth that overtook its entire body. A horrible creature with blunt teeth and no facial features cried out at him, sinking those blunt teeth into a tree that appeared to be made out of living flesh.

Then it all stopped. The room went black instead of red. Contrast was in complete darkness. He looked around for a light source, but couldn’t see anything. He rose to his feet, confused and wary.

Contrast: what’s this? Have you finally given up? Hah! You can’t frighten me with your blasted tricks! What’s to be scared of a bunch of events that have either happened in the past or never will?

A low growl could be heard from the darkness that caused a chill to run down the Kecleon’s spine. For a few seconds he thought he could faintly make out a shape squatting in the darkness, a grotesque, four legged beast with bare wrinkled skin and tiny red eyes. Contrast squinted into the darkness but there was nothing. He could only hear the sounds of his own breathing. At least he hoped it was his own breathing.

Contrast: none of this is real. You can’t frighten me! I’ve seen things that would make any ordinary Pokemon cry with fear, but I am not ashamed of my past! I am merciless, powerful, I regret nothing! I know my strengths and weaknesses and I know who I can and who I can’t kill, and if I have to fight then I never spare the weaklings I defeat!

Contrast was answered with silence. He thought he could hear the low growl again, but the minute he tried to follow it, it would stop. His senses felt muddled. He could smell something, but he couldn’t focus on it long enough to sum up his situation properly. Every now and again, he would feel something behind him, but when he turned around, there would be nothing there.

Contrast: I’ll just sit here. I’ve got nothing to fear, this is all just a psychological hallucination. I’m stronger than all of you!

So Contrast sat in the darkness, listening to the sounds that coursed through his head. After a while, his imagination started to get the better of him. What was that thing he had seen lurking in the darkness before? That creature could be waiting out of his sight, and any minute it could come crawling out and sink its fangs into his prone form.

Contrast: I could kill it…

But if that creature was real, then Contrast knew he would have no hope. It would probably be invincible or undead or something that made it impossible to defeat. He imagined the countless horrors that could be waiting for him in this empty place, each one much stronger than him, horrible monsters bristling with claws and teeth and dripping saliva from their open jaws. He could see these images vividly against the darkness, and because he could not see any objects which he could focus on, he did not know whether the things he saw were being imagined in his head or actually there.

“You’re insignificant.” A voice said in his head. “You know that you’re alone here, and vulnerable. You’re nothing, no longer a brilliant fighter or merciless killer. Here you have no power.”

Contrast ignored it. He was adamant that he could overcome this cursed room and show Deoxes that he was made of sterner stuff than he was given credit for.

Contrast: ha ha ha ha…I hope they’re watching me. I hope they can see me laughing here, unafraid, unmoving…strong…

The shapeless forms of Contrast’s imagination faded in and out of the darkness. He closed his eyes, but it made no difference. Despite his sturdiness, Contrast knew he was imprisoned in a less than desirable place and facing the unknown. And what was more, he was starting to feel uneasy.

!@#$%@#$%@#$%@#$%@#$%@#$%@#$%@#$%@#$%@#$%@#$

Back in the Frigie system, Ness and his friends were preparing to depart on their quest. Although he was worrying about the time it would take to travel such a huge distance without any teleportation, Feya assured him that it would work out.

Feya: there’s a small town at the base of the mountain that specialize in connections with other countries outside the Land Of Frozen Water. Ice Mountain may be secluded, but we’re not completely out of touch with technology.

Fox: so I suppose you’re going to find us a boat and we’ll sail across the sea. If it’s pirates you’re thinking of traveling with, then I’m not interested.

Feya: no. You’ll see. Now let’s hope this snow storm shows us mercy, we’ve got a distance to travel first.

A few hours into the trek, things started getting out of hand. Jeff, Adeline and Paula simultaneously caught colds and Mr. Game and Watch kept falling into deep snow drifts and had to be dug out. After one particularly wild gust threatened to blow Ness’s head off his body, Feya signaled for a break.

Fox: gaah! If it gets any colder here, I’m afraid my coat will turn white! Hooooooh, brrrrr! And speaking of coats, I just happen to be in my summer fur at the moment, so yeah.

Paula: oh yeah? Well we don’t have fur, summer coat or otherwise, so we’re colder than you are!

Fox: your ears aren’t as big as mine!

Ness: stop bickering, you two! We’re all as cold as each other here. Why don’t you dig a nice burrow in the snow, I’ve heard it keeps you surprisingly warm.

Paula: I’ll pass.

The Ice Climbers had been particularly silent the whole time, and were now sitting in the snow with their arms folded across their chests. Ness allowed some silence to pass before scooping up a big ball of snow and taking a bite out of it.

Jeff: Ness, that was a weird thing to do.

Ness: (eating snow) why?

Jeff: well…uh…never mind.

Fox: (eats some snow) it’s like eating crunchy water, only cold.

G&W: and don’t tell me, you’ve eaten crunchy water before?

Fox: there’s a planet in the Lylat system that has such an unusual gravitational pull that the water goes crunchy. I forget what it’s called, but Slippy tells me he’s been there.

G&W: I shouldn’t have asked.

Ness turned to Feya and saw her staring off into the snow. He followed her gaze, but could see nothing through the swirling snow.

Ness: what are you looking at, Feya?

Feya: this is mountain wolf territory. A tribe of wolves lives near here who call themselves the Rez-yan. So far, we’ve had good ties with them, but with the strange behavior of the polar bears recently, I don’t know what to expect.

Ness: well if they attack us, we’ll be able to defeat them, no doubt.

Feya: the Rez-yan are fearsome warriors. We sometimes trade with them, and I have seen their fighters. They look impressive to say the least. I doubt any of us Kura-hani could match them physically.

Popo: all Kura-hani are weak.

Nana: your muscles are flop.

Fox: hey, give it a break you two.

Just as the Ice Climbers were preparing a comeback, a bone-chilling howl echoed through the snow.

Feya: mountain wolves!

Ness: ****e, that scared me. I wonder how close it is?

Popo: not far.

Nana: quite near, actually.

Ness: on your guard everyone. If we happen to meet these Rez-yan, we’ll show them we don’t want to fight. If they attack, though, we’ll kick their butts, got it?

Paula: can we just kick their butts if they get to close to us?

Ness: no.

Feya: come on, I say we get moving.

As the group trudged through the snow, the blizzard thinned slightly. Ness could make out the rock structures and low cliffs on either side of them. They seemed to be walking through a tradable path. Another wolf howl could be heard, and Ness traced it as coming from slightly behind them. The blizzard thinned some more. Ness could now see a fair portion of the landscape in front of him. Many square blocks of ice hung in the air that Ness guessed were suspended there through some magical force. He looked up at these blocks and likened them to stairs.

Ness: I bet we could get up on top of these cliffs if we jumped on those ice blocks.

Feya: not worth it. You could fall and hurt yourself. It’s better to walk on the ground.

Popo: we climb the ice blocks all day, don’t we, pretty sister?

Nana: like pros. Big ones.

Ness: well yeah, you guys are the Ice Climbers. You…climb ice.

Ness turned and saw something up ahead of them. Nobody else seemed to have noticed it, but Ness could make out the shape of a body walking towards them.

Ness: Feya, look!

Feya looked at the thing Ness was pointing at and her ears perked up. The figure stopped walking, obviously having sighted Ness and his band.

Ness: everyone, stand still and play it by ear. I don’t want to see any action until I give the word.

The figure waited for a few more seconds and then began advancing slowly and cautiously. As it got closer, Ness’s suspicions were confirmed.

Feya: mountain wolf…

The mountain wolf stood not far from Ness and his party, observing these strangers uncertainly. It was a young male of a gray colour with a long, shaggy coat that blew around in the snow. Ness could see that the wolf was wearing long thick pants and heavy boots, but his robust upper body was bare, covered only by streaks of red tribal paint and the extremely long, flowing red scarf that was tied to his neck. Either way, Ness could tell that these wolves were very accustomed to the temperature.

Everyone watched as the wolf stared them down, obviously summing up the situation. This creature was armed, and Ness could clearly see the quarterstaff in his right hand. He was holding it at ready, but had not yet taken a fighting stance. Ness was entranced by the rugged appearance of this mountain warrior. The wolf seemed to give off a feeling of suppressed strength, although his stance and body language did not come across as arrogant or surly. Ness could hear Fox gasping with awe behind him.

Fox: look at the muscles on HIM!

Ness: shhh!

Fox: I don’t like wolves. They’re unpredictable and they…

Ness: shhh!

Feya: he doesn’t look evil. He chooses a staff for his weapon, so that leads me to think he may be gentle of heart…

Ness wanted to agree with Feya. This warrior did not look like a killer. A fighter, yes, but not a killer.

After a wait that lasted too long for Ness’s liking, another wolf entered the scene. This newcomer was also a young male, but not as heavily built as his friend, and he was wearing a sort of short-sleeved parka or woolen bodysuit that appeared similar to the Ice-climbers. Like the other wolf, this one was also wearing a long red scarf and was holding a quarterstaff. He also had a shock of spiky fur growing on his forehead.
The two wolves whispered to each other, and the one in the suit nodded and motioned towards Ness with a nod of his head.
The first wolf took a deep breath and cautiously began walking towards Ness. Soon, they were standing quite close to each other, just out of range of each other’s weapons.

The first wolf spoke in a strong, yet unchallenging voice.

Wolf 1: what are you and your pack doing in Rez-yan-territory?

Ness: we’re just passing through here. We want to get through to the town at the base of the mountain. We’re not disturbing you, are we?

The second wolf looked at his friend and then spoke. His voice was much less gruff, and of a high, youthful pitch.

Wolf 2: you should move on then. If you have no business here, then I would advise you to continue your journey with much haste.

Ness: thanks. We won’t stay here long. Come on, guys.

Everyone made their way past the two wolves, making sure to avoid eye contact. The wolves stood silently side by side. They seemed very uneasy about something. As Ness and his friends walked away, the second wolf called after them, shouting over the blizzard (which was picking back up again.)

Wolf 2: hurry, if our chief finds you, he will have you killed!

Ness turned to have another look at the wolves, but the blizzard obscured them from view. Something strange was underfoot concerning the tribes of Ice Mountain, and Ness suspected the final Dark Missionary had something to do with it.

excelent! a new update. at first I kinda felt sorry for Contrast a while back when he had been sentanced to the red room forever (or at least a REALLY long time, i can't remember), but I suppose if you regret or fear nothing of your past the red room wouldn't affect you, would it? and Sylph is curious about all this. hm...

I see we've got a way of getting around the insane distance of six continents, what with the town and its connections, so i guess that helps a bit. ok, a lot. :p I liked Fox's crunchy water remark. Now to imagine crunchy water, all i have to do is eat some snow and imagine it's not so cold, right? 'cuz if it doesn't work, I want a refund! of what, i don't know.

The Rez-yan warriors seem to be interesting, but I wonder why their chief would kill anyone around, even if they're only passing. maybe the Dark Missionary has taken control of him, or maybe it hasn't, but he can sense it but doesn't know what it is, and so is very suspicious/precautious, to the point of killing even travelers just to be safe. hmmm.....

speaking of WarioWare, I just got WarioWare: Touched! the other day, and let me say, GASP!!! it's the friggin' best idea i've seen anyone come up with in a long time. btw, the DS rules! (I got one for Christmas a few months ago. It's awesome!) so much to do.... so many games!.... yah, it's just great.and I mean great as in GREAT!

Sorry, I've been very tied down with homework over the past few weeks, and I'm currently working on a really big Flash project for school.

I've cut no corners, taken no shortcuts, everything is origional, the artwork is the best I've ever done on a flash movie, I've done all the voice acting myself, I've mixed all the music myself using a keyboard and Acid program (hard!!) and I'm already five scenes into it and the teacher hasn't even finished telling the rest of the class how to use tweens. Oh, and the animation isn't that bad either.

I'M SO GETTING AN 'A' FOR THIS!

I'm not bragging, I'm just excited. So you got touched, did you? I might get that when I buy a DS, but I'm waiting for promos before I get one. They'll probably do something with it when the PSP comes out, because it seems that the PSP is going to beat the DS when it comes to sales. (I think it already has.)

(sighs.)

Yeah, so it has good graphics and plays DVDs, but does it have pictochat and does it have any games where you can unravel toilet rolls simply by rubbing the screen? I thought not!

The continent thing has you baffled? Here's a clue.

In SSBM, what happens when you hold L and R while the game is loading a battle on Ice Mountain?

Are you sure that b***o** F***T is part of the Ice Climber world? It could be that they wanted to add the song into the game and put it there randomly. Oh and even if PSP did outsell DS in Japan, more than half of all PSP purchased was returned. don't ask me why.

ERH! That creepy Jamster add pops up and scares me everytime I try to log on. I don't like it!

As for the BF thing, well personally, I don't see why it couldn't be.
After all, I managed to sucessfully blend Metroid and F-Zero, didn't I? (wink, wink, cough, cough)

doot-doot-doot-doot...do-do-do-do-do-do-doooooooo-dooooooo...

As for the PSP thing, well I thought Sony fixed up the battery life problems...

Could it be that the PSP just sucks? (Un)likely, but I bet it'll sell like hot cakes over in US. Sony's products are so over-hyped.

I had problems writing this update. You'll see why when you read it. Certain things were hard to describe without the wrong impression seeping out. And if you're looking for a laugh, I suggest you wait for the next update before reading this one. I was in one of those moods again...

ON a better note, I've recently realised that I REALLY like Metroid! And Samus is an awesomely-designed character! If you want a secret about the Wario Ware fic that I don't want to keep contained, PM me! But shh, it's a secret.

CHAPTER 9: PART 6

As Ness and his friends disappeared into the snow, the two mountain wolves stared on after them. Nagan and his friend Kerrim had been sent to patrol the borders of the Rez-yan territory by their Chief, Gero-sanna Rez-Yan. Recently, their Chief had become somewhat paranoid, ordering random members of the tribe to patrol the borders at all times to prevent strangers from finding the village.

Nagan disliked going on patrol. He knew he should be back at the village looking after his partner and his two young pups. However, he knew better than to complain. Chief Gero-sanna had always been cruel, but in the past few weeks he’d become even more sadistic than usual.

Nagan: what do you think has come over the Chief, Kerrik? He was always violent, but he was a good leader before, wasn’t he?

Kerrim brushed aside the plume of thick spiny hair that grew on his forehead. He was a very tidy wolf, with a charming smile and a gentle personality. Most of the Rez-yan wolves preferred to show off their physiques and usually went bare-chested, but Kerrim was never seen without his parka. He didn’t look tough and he didn’t try to, but just about every wolf in the tribe knew that his mild temperament and modesty hid a fighter with plenty of skill. Kerrim also hated blades, preferring blunt-edged weapons such as staves. Many of the other wolves thought he was silly, but Nagan knew that Kerrim didn’t like blades because he’d never killed before and didn’t want to. Out of everyone in the tribe, Kerrim was the only one who could stake this claim and the only one who would. The other wolves all reveled in their fighting prowess. “I once slew three polar bears in a row!” phrases like these were common amongst bragging warriors. But Kerrim took pride in his gentle ways. Nagan had recently come to share this view with Kerrim after he had killed another Rez-yan wolf over a petty feud. He had taken up the staff, which he was having difficulty mastering.

Kerrim: he wasn’t a bad leader…he’s certainly not the wisest or kindest wolf in the pack, but he’s kept us living quite happily together until now.

Nagan: why do you think he’s sending us out on border patrol?

Kerrim: isn’t it obvious? He doesn’t want outsiders to see what he’s doing to us.

Nagan: do you really…no, he’s not…the Chief’s just suspicious about something…that’s why he’s…

Kerrim: Nagan, don’t you see? These are not just fits of rage or fear we’re bearing the brunt of…the Chief’s actions are ritualistic, almost ceremonial. He stalks through the camp like a predator, singles out a target and then…

Nagan: it can’t be true. I think he’s just stressed and needs to take it out on someone.

Kerrim: believe what you want. I think he’s insane, and I’m concerned for my own safety. If he ever touches me, I will leave.

Nagan swallowed and looked away from Kerrim. He knew what Kerrim had said was true. There was something wrong with their Chief’s actions lately, but none of the wolves in the tribe wanted to believe it.

Kerrim: it’s time for us to go back. This snowstorm is getting fierce. I pity the next two wolves sent on duty…too muscle-headed to wear any extra clothing in this freezing cold!

That was another interesting thing about Kerrim. He was probably the only wolf in the tribe who felt the cold.

*** **** ***** ******** ******

Soon, Nagan and Kerrim were back at their village. The snowstorm was relentless, and many of the huts were closed to prevent snow from coming inside. But there was something else. A feeling of silence overshadowed everything else. Some Rez-yan were standing outside, but they didn’t talk to one another, and every wolf in sight looked fearful and disturbed. There was an ominous presence in the air, and Nagan knew just what had caused it.

Kerrim: we’re back. Who’s next on patrol?

Two wolves mumbled a reply and started to head out into the snow. Kerrim began to feel edgy. Where was Chief Gero-sanna? Something had happened while he and Nagan were away on patrol, and Kerrim had an idea of what it could have been.

Kerrim: Nagan…you probably should go home to your family now…I can sense it, something grim is coming down the pipe.

It was like the whole village was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen. Every wolf stared on in silent fear. Nagan began to feel slightly paranoid. This was supposed to be their village, the place where all the Rez-yan wolves could feel safe. But now the village seemed more like a trap than a home.

Nagan: You’re right, I can feel it too...where’s Gero-sanna? Urgh…I’m going back to my hut to check on Meyl and the cubs.

Suddenly, Nagan felt something touch his back. His stomach dropped as a powerful arm extended over his shoulder and held his neck in a vice-lock. Nagan could feel the Chief’s hot breath in his ear. He stood rigid, paralyzed with fear as Gero-sanna held a cold blade against his chest. The Rez-yan Chief held Nagan up against his body in a gentle, yet malicious grip. Nagan’s heart was pounding in his chest. The Chief softly growled a command into his ear in a voice that made his flesh crawl.

Gero-sanna: tell me your name.

Nagan: N-Nagan sir…

Gero-sanna: Nagan…I wonder why I didn’t notice you before…

Nagan remained silent. He didn’t ask what the Chief meant, he didn’t want to know.

Gero-sanna: I wonder why I didn’t notice how strong your body looks…with a strong body like that, no doubt you could stand up to a lot of pain…

Gero-sanna growled into Nagan’s ear. It was a deep, scary growl, the sort of growl a predator makes before it bites through its victim’s spinal chord. Kerrim stood not far away, his mouth open in shock and fear. He knew he could do nothing to help his friend. The Chief’s grip tightened. There was a tone of excitement in his voice as he whispered another command into Nagan’s twitching ear.

Gero-sanna: stand still…you try anything and I’ll snap your neck like a stalactite. Now then, where should I stab you first?

Nagan: no! P-Please Chief…

Gero-sanna: shut up, I don’t want to hear you talk; I want to hear you scream!

Nagan cried out in horror as the knife sliced slowly across his chest and his light-blood began running down his torso. Just as the pain began to register, the Chief pushed the knife into Nagan’s leg, causing his knees to buckle. Nagan lay in the snow, curled into a ball and sobbing in pain as the Chief stood over him, shivering with cruel delight.

Gero-sanna: suffer…

The Rez-yan Chief threw back his head and let out a long, triumphant howl. He gave Nagan a sharp kick to the side before turning to the assembled Rez-yan wolves who had been watching the spectacle.

Gero-sanna: hmph. I was right, he is pretty hardy. He only shouted once. Not bad…

There was an evil glint in the Chief’s eye. He was rightfully the biggest and strongest wolf in the tribe. He had a course, shaggy grey coat and a strong, yet cruel face. As the Chief, Gero-sanna’s status amongst the Rez-yan wolves was illustrated through his body paint and attire. The Chief had sharp, jagged patterns painted onto his chest and over his shoulders. This paint was bright red as opposed to the blue worn by the wolves of lower rank. His red silk scarf split down the middle, and was ragged and torn at the ends. The chief chose only to wear a red silk loincloth and jeweled belt studded with rubies. He looked more like a savage than any of the other wolves in the tribe.

Gero-sanna growled softly and then walked away.

Kerrim: oh no…Nagan…

Kerrim walked over to his friend and bent down to comfort him. Nagan had his eyes screwed shut and his fangs bared. He was sobbing and there were tiny tears in the corners of his eyes.

Nagan: is…is he gone?

Kerrim: yes, do you need help getting up? Those wounds are deep, but nothing too serious. We need to get you home and do something before they become infected. Come on, I’ll help you walk.

Nagan let out a strangled whimper. It wasn’t the pain that prevented him from standing, though. Nagan had suffered worse wounds before, but it was fear that kept him shivering on the ground. Never in his life had Nagan been so severely dominated. The Chief had total control over him for those few short minutes. It wasn’t a simple violent act of frustration that had been directed at him, oh no. Gero-sanna had held him firmly in place, feeling his heartbeat, toying with his fear and drinking in his terror. He felt violated; the Chief had used him like a child’s toy, as if he existed for no reason other than to suffer at his leader’s bequest.

Kerrim: come on, let’s get you back home.

Kerrim supported Nagan all the way back to his hut. By then Nagan had gotten over his shock and was starting to complain about the wounds themselves rather than the psychological dent he’d acquired.

Nagan: these will be sore for quite some time…how am I supposed to go out hunting like this?

Kerrim pushed open the door of Nagan’s hut. Nagan’s mate, Meyl, was sitting next to the bed, cradling a cub in her arms. She looked terrible, her light grey fur was matted and scruffy and her eyes had a fatigued glaze to them. The fur around her cheeks was wet, and she’d been crying. Upon hearing the door open, Meyl turned to see Nagan’s wounds and stiffened. She placed the cub onto the bed and stood up shakily.

Meyl: Nagan…what happened to you?

Nagan: ah…we encountered a stranger at the border who refused to turn back. He was good with a knife, but in the end Kerrim made him see reason, right?

Kerrim: hmph. Yes, I guess so. Meyl, you may like to do something about these wounds.

Meyl shuddered and made to turn around.

Meyl: o-of course…Just let me tend to the cubs, then I’ll treat them for you…

The she-wolf turned her back to them, and that’s when Kerrim saw it. Even under her dress it was unmistakable: blood, and lots of it, all around her left shoulder and across the side of her neck. No wonder Meyl wasn’t feeling well, she had a wound of her own to contend with. Nagan saw this too and cried out in alarm.

Nagan: Meyl! Your shoulder…what…

Meyl stopped walking and sat down on the bed, tears running down her face.

Meyl: It was Chief Gero-sanna! While you were out on border patrol, I was taking a walk in the village, and then suddenly he was behind me, and h-he held me in his arms and started telling me how beautiful I was. And then he told me that if I struggled he’d kill me…

Kerrim: what did he do then?

Meyl: he…he started to lick my fur…and then he…he bit me. He just sunk his fangs into my shoulder and brought me to my knees…I lay there in the snow, even though he’d gone, I was so scared…I thought he’d kill me. Oh, it still hurts; my shoulder feels like it’s on fire. I’m so glad you’re back, Nagan…I don’t want to go out there by myself again. I don’t want Chief Gero-sanna going anywhere near the cubs.

There was a stunned silence in the hut. Meyl picked up her infant son and put him in the cot next to the other one.

Meyl: he wanted me…I could feel it. He wanted me to be HIS mate…his grasp was so…oh, I feared for my life. I don’t know why he bit me like that…because he wanted me probably…I can only imagine how he treats Lady Amell…

Lady Amell was Gero-sanna’s mate. Unlike her partner, she was very kind and submissive, yet somewhat on the uppity side. She’d stopped showing herself around the village recently, and rumors had started as to why. Some of the wolves believed that Amell was pregnant and ready to conceive a litter. The less optimistic believed that Gero-sanna had physically damaged her in such a way that she didn’t want to be seen.

Nagan: Meyl…I lied about the border thing. Gero-sanna did this to me as well. He held me in the same way that you described and…cut me…with his blade.

Meyl looked shocked.

Meyl: he wants you dead…so he can take me!

Kerrim: NO! THAT’S NOT THE CASE AT ALL!! Don’t you see? The Chief behaves the same way towards both the males and females in this tribe! It wasn't desire that caused him to attack you, Meyl. Heck, if he wanted you, he’d take you, and Nagan would just have to live with it. It’s not some sick form of lust that’s causing him to torture us like this, he’s doing it for other reasons. Because he LIKES it. He LIKES hurting living creatures.

Kerrim scowled and gripped his staff. Nagan and Meyl sat silently next to each other, staring at him. He snorted and looked away.

Kerrim: I think he’s insane, and I’m not going to stand around and end up like you, Nagan. Tomorrow, I’m leaving this tribe.

Nagan: but Kerrim, you’re not allowed to leave the tribe!

Kerrim: I’ll sneak out. There’s no way Gero-sanna will bother looking for me. He’d be too busy making sure no outsiders get to see what he’s doing to you lot. I doubt he’d notice if one of us goes missing.

Meyl: where will you go?

Kerrim: I guess I’ll just become a wonderer then…what’s the term? A lone wolf. Ironic, isn’t it?

Nagan: good luck then. But I’m staying here with Meyl and the cubs. There’s no way we could survive out there by ourselves. Not with a family like this.

Kerrim: In that case, farewell. Perhaps I’ll return in a few years, when someone else is Chief.

The three wolves stared solemnly at each other. It was a difficult time for the Rez-yan.

@#(%$*%%%%%%%%%%%%%)()))))))))))))))

Chief Gero-sanna Rez-yan lay sprawled on his bed, thoroughly exhausted. The big wolf smiled contentedly to himself and gazed at the foot of the bed, where a dark, shapeless figure sat, it’s evil energy radiating around the room.

Dark Missionary 3: surely you’re not finished yet?

Gero-sanna: that’s enough for today. Huff…takes a lot out of me, and I wouldn’t want them to start a mutiny now, would I?

Dark Missionary 3: that’s not an issue. With me by your side, you cannot be harmed.

Gero-sanna: hmph. Nevertheless, I’m done for today, and maybe tomorrow. I am their leader after all, I’m not trying to kill them. And plus, I’m tired. I need some time to let my heart settle.

The Dark Missionary’s eyes glowed with malevolent energy.

Gero-sanna: what’s in it for you, anyway?

Dark Missionary 3: all I ask is that you grant me sanctuary within this village and continue to feed me with pain from your tribe. In exchange…you receive the physical pleasure and power you desire whenever you inflict pain on another living creature.

Gero-sanna: and what about her?

Gero-sanna sat up and nodded towards Amell’s motionless figure. The she-wolf was hanging in a corner of the room, suspended from the roof with strings of dark energy like some ornate puppet.

Dark Missionary 3: I am using her body as a shelter. No harm will come to her as long as you continue to feed me, and as long as you have me here, you won’t miss her.

Gero-sanna: I’m not too sure about that. There are things my mate can give me that you can’t. I can’t hold you in my arms and feel your love and admiration. I can’t sit with you on starry nights, whispering sweet nothings into your ear…

Dark Missionary 3: she can give you those things…but can she do this?

A wave of pure adrenalin coursed through Gero-sanna’s body. He reeled with ecstasy at the sensation, the fur prickling all down his back.

Gero-sanna: ALRIGHT, alright. Stop…you’ve made your point…I never said I’d relinquish our deal, I was only asking…

Dark Missionary 3: of course. You enjoy causing pain to others, you enjoy the feeling you get from causing pain to others…you enjoy the feeling I give to you for causing pain to others…and what’s more, if you stay by your word, I will grant you power you’ve only ever dreamed of. I can make you king of Ice Mountain...

Gero-sanna: I may not be the most saintly of wolves, but even I can see that you’re a thing of pure evil…

Dark Missionary 3: and just how does that change things?

Gero-sanna: it doesn’t. As long as no outsiders see what’s going on in this village, it doesn’t matter at all.

Dark Missionary 3: that’s right…

Gero-sanna: now go away; I’m dead tired from all those energy rushes…

Dark Missionary 3: sleep well, I’ll look forward to the next time you decide to go stalking.

Gero-sanna: go away you filthy parasite. I don’t want to see you…for a while, anyway.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The third Dark Missionary has been revealed, and Ness and his friends have no idea they’ve just passed it by! What’s going to happen next? Will we find out how Ness plans to travel the globe? Or will I slyly switch back to the Pokemon war, leaving you in a state of suspense? ONLY TIME WILL TELL!!!

whoa! an insider look at the goings on of the Rez-Yan tribe, and we find out that *gasp* it IS the dark missionary there! power hungry Gero-sanna has struck a deal with the Dark Missionary, and is now just using his own tribe for power rushes and feelings of domination. All he knows is that he's getting what he wants and that if he keeps his deal he'll aquire unimaginable power... plus he doesn't care that the thing is pure evil. Kerrim has decided to become a "lone wolf", ironically, but maybe he'll run into Ness and co., inform them of his tribes plight, you know... ? anyway, what ever you update next, Ness's quest or the pokemon wars, I look forward to it. See ya later!

Hey, pretty cool! Mwahahaa... The Dinner Mage. Pure genious! lol.

I've kinda always wanted to put various art pieces of mine on the net, but in the past there were always a few things in the way:
No scanner, No Photoshop, Lack of time to dedicate to it, etc....

The only thing that's really stopping me now is the lack of Photoshop, now that summer has started. I do have 3 or four Link sketches on notebook paper from a few years ago, though... maybe I'll start a Deviant thingy and just put those up. They're not great, but meh...

Congrats, NessBounder! I can't wait to see what zany artwork you'll be putting up soon. Anyway, I guess I'll cya later.

Firstly, I would like to say how SORRY I AM for neglecting my stories. I'VE JUST BEEN SO HOOKED UP IN MY ART, but that's no excuse, is it? I don't have anything yet, but I just want to let everyone know that I really am still thinking about these fics, and I won't let them die just yet. My updates may be rare, but I have a WarioWare update almost ready.

In the meantime, I can try to offer you guys compensation sort of...

This is what I've been doing this whole time. I hope you all understand.

Hey, remember me? I’m updating out of guilt!

Anyway, here we go.

CHAPTER 9: PART 7

Twilight was drawing near in Pokemon world. The hallways of Deoxes’ lair were silent and empty with the exception of two hooved feet trotting along the concrete floor. Keshi followed silently behind Sylph, hoping that his mistress wasn’t angry with him. The Gardevoir floated in front of him, not speaking and not even bothering to check if he was following. Keshi began to notice scratch marks on the walls. He recognized the chamber as the hallway leading to the red room, the place Deoxes’ troops were sent for punishment.

Sylph: Keshi, you know where we are going, do you not?

Keshi: y-yes m’lady. But surely I…what have I done to deserve…

Sylph: shut up, fool. I’m not sentencing you to punishment; I need you to do me a favor to quench my curiosity.

Keshi: a favor?

The door to the red room control room opened with a sinister hiss. Sylph glided inside and began fiddling with the control panel. She turned and glared at Keshi who was already starting to worry.

Sylph: in this room, a prisoner from the enemy army is serving time while our master decides what to do with him. I want you to scan this individual’s mind and tell me why the red room is continuously increasing with power.

Keshi: increasing in…it’s not supposed to do that, though, is it?

Sylph: no. Even though the red room has no variables in power, I can feel the malignant energy growing stronger. No Pokemon has ever been in the red room on an infinite cycle…I think there’s something we should know about this room, something Deoxes doesn’t want us to find out.

Keshi: M’lady? You’re…defying Deoxes?

Sylph: Keshi, after Deoxes murdered half his legions, I think it would be wise to stop and think for ourselves once in a while. If we continue to follow Deoxe’s orders, we won’t live very much longer. I used to adore Deoxes, I would do anything for him...but now I’m not so sure. I want to investigate into Deoxes and this technology he’s been using. There’s no way Spinner could have created the red room. Something like that must be Deoxes doing. I believe that while Spinner created all our mechanical aids, the red room is something else and I believe it serves another purpose besides punishment. Now scan that creature’s mind and tell me how this thing works…

Keshi didn’t know what to do. By scanning the prisoners mind, he would be exposed to all the horror of the red room, yet Sylph seemed deadly serious about her goal, and he cared for her deeply as his master. The Grumpig sighed and placed his claws at his temples.

The first thing that Keshi felt was a horrible dropping sensation in his stomach before a burst or red and black clouded his vision. Swirling and flickering like liquid fire, the black/red energy seemed to be alive. Keshi thought he could see body parts bobbing in and out of it. It was dripping around him in great clumps which hit the nonexistent floor with sloppy wet thuds. Keshi noticed something in front of him protruding from the ooze. He couldn’t quite tell just what it was, until it moved.

Then the prisoner’s mind fused with his own.

“YOU ARE NOT REAL!! I’M NOT SEEING THIS, THIS ISN’T REAL!! GET AWAY FROM ME, YOU…GET AWAY! YOU CAN’T HURT ME…n-nO DON’T HURT HER!! STOP, Ugh, I can still see it when I close my eyes! No more, stop TALKING TO ME!!”

Horrible images flashed before Keshi’s eyes. Disturbing, twisted, sickening images just kept coming relentlessly. Stomach-churning wails and screams pierced the air as well as other noises. Keshi could feel the evil energy cutting through him as the red and black slime dripped around him. The prisoner’s emotions were running wild. Feelings of disbelief, anger, fear, horror, disgust and more were flashing through his mind at impossible speeds, but at all times was a feeling of defiance and strength. This brave Pokemon still continued to resist the red room’s effects.

Keshi had to fight to keep scanning Contrast’s mind. The third level of scan came through and a sharp, biting voice lashed out at him through the darkness.

???: You can’t take much more…you’re going to go insane, ha ha ha…you’re going to die, you’re a weak, pathetic Pokemon, you’re a killer, you have no past, you have no shame, you have fear, you have no fear of your past, but you have fear of me…I am your fear and I’ll show you what fear is…I’ll share MY fear with you, I’ll share my pain with you, I’ll make you cry like I do…I’ll make you scream like I have done so many times before…I’ll take it aaaaaaall out on YOU! HA ha ha ha! And your fear will make me stronger…and stronger…and stronger…until I won’t have to take this anymore…until I’m FREE!

Keshi looked through Contrasts eyes and saw the thing he’d been confronted with earlier. It was clear now, burning into his brain and sending his body into panic mode. The cause of all this torture, the core of the red room…was a living thing.

It crouched before Contrast, surrounded by the dark ooze. It resembled a Ninetales somewhat, having a long muzzle and pointed ears, but its fur was a deathly off-white colour and smeared with red stains. It was adorned with gold jewelry, bandages, bracelets and other accessories that, despite looking luxurious seemed to exude a sinister aura. The creature’s arms were secured with chains so that it could barely move, and it was fixed to the ground in a very uncomfortable looking position. Its soft, medium-length fur was matted with sweat, and red tears flowed constantly from its beautiful blue eyes.

Keshi was given an even clearer picture of the thing as it strained hopelessly against its chains. The first thing that struck him was its appearance. It was an incredibly handsome creature, with soft, delicate features and a perfectly toned body that looked strong, yet not strong enough to be considered powerful by any means.

However, it WAS powerful! Keshi had never felt such dark energy being produced by any entity in his whole life. It grabbed hold of reality and twisted it mercilessly. It distorted truth and replaced it with nightmares. Its physical beauty was blown flat by its overall sickening image: a pathetic, sad, humiliated creature held torturously in one place by cold steel shackles. It taunted Contrast ruthlessly, yet it sounded desperate rather than cruel. As if contrast’s fear was the only thing it lived for.

Keshi watched the creature laugh insecurely to itself. Two more images flashed in front of him before it shivered in agony, gasping for breath through its apparent pain. The horrible red liquid was dripping through its fangs now, and Keshi almost felt like throwing up. He heard it give a strangled grunt of frustration before it looked up again at Contrast and grinned in a way that sent Keshi’s heart into overdrive. He was frozen in place out of fear as he watched the beast ready another set of images.

A sharp pain woke Keshi from his mental bond. He fell back against the concrete of the red control room, hitting his head, but not hard enough to hurt himself. Sylph was standing over him, a look of shock in her purple eyes. She had slapped him.

Sylph: Keshi, that’s enough. You looked like you were about to die. I’ve been reading your mind and using you as a sort of filter, and yes, I…saw that too.

Keshi curled up into a ball and whimpered in reply, refusing to open his eyes.

Sylph: you were very brave and I appreciate your efforts, Keshi. Thanks to you I think I’ve discovered a few things about the red room.

Sylph crouched down and held Keshi against a wall in a comforting manner. Both of them were cold and disturbed, although Sylph was still managing to mask her emotions perfectly.

Sylph: that red room’s purpose is to torture its captive with their own regret, and by exposing them to situations they’d rather not think about. That Kecleon was a hard boiled killer and has nothing in his past to regret. For that reason, the red room failed to disturb him by exposing him to moments from his past. It had to resort to greater measures, twisting reality more and more until finally the content it displays is pure fiction, nightmare images that even the most hardened and callous of souls cannot endure…there’s no way it’s a machine, no machine could possibly do that. We as Pokemon…no…as living things aren’t designed to bask in evil, or even to become completely evil. No living thing alive could endure those…horrible situations for long.

Keshi shivered and nodded silently. Sylph restrained herself from tampering with his emotions this time. She continued her speech.

Sylph: The red room is going to continue to intensify until that Kecleon cracks like an egg. What frightens me is that the things in there were indeed real…it is capable of bringing those prisoners into a secret realm where those nightmares become real! That creature we saw, the…thing that…is the actual force behind the red room was very much a living, breathing creature and not just an illusion! What frightens me is that the red room is actually inhabited by that monster, that thing that is capable of dragging us down into the underworld! Don’t you see, Keshi? Deoxes is trying to hide this evil from us! He is using demons and death magic for his own purposes and pretending its Psychic power! He spoke of quintessence earlier, and I know what quintessence is. Deoxes wants to kill us all, and it’s not for power! The fact that he’s using creatures from the underworld as torture devices, and harvesting the life force of his own servants goes to show that Deoxes’ plans are much, much darker than just ridding the world of humans…

Sylph grabbed Keshi in her fin-like arms and stared into his eyes. She looked desperate, the air of obedience and coldness that had always surrounded her was gone.

Sylph: Keshi, we have to continue serving Deoxes like nothing has happened. Forget about what you’ve saw. I’m going to delve deeper into this, I’m going to try to sabotage Deoxes plans without him knowing. Even if it means I have to die trying, if he finds what I’m doing. I want you to desert, Keshi. I want you to escape from this h*llhole and go as far as you can from Mt. Pyre. You’re a good Pokemon, you don’t deserve a fate like this.

Keshi: m’lady, I will serve you until death. I must stay by your side, and if the time comes, I will shield you with my own life.

Sylph:…I...Keshi…I’ve never…why do you still wish to serve me? I’ve never shown you any form of respect, I’ve never treated you kindly, why would you possibly want to protect me, even now?

Keshi: lady Sylph, you aren’t as cruel or cold as you act. You’ve calmed me many times with your vibes, and even though you were harsh to me, I know you have a good heart. I…like and admire you a lot, m’lady. As my master and as my…friend.

For the first time in her life, Sylph cried openly. She threw aside her sophistication and embraced her servant, tears streaming from her eyes.

Sylph: I…don’t w-want…you to be hurt, Keshi…I’ll protect you too. I won’t let Deoxes kill you…like he did the others. In my own way, I’m going to avenge them all…for Byter, for Spinner for the rebels, for everyone who’s lives have been ruined because of Deoxes, even Spiteshade and Klyncher! I’m going to do my part and avenge them all! I may not be powerful enough to hurt him directly, but I can stop him getting any stronger until someone comes along and defeats him! Those rebels may be our salvation, Keshi. Our enemies may become our saviors, but we have to do this smartly. I can’t…stuff this up.

Keshi: lady…it doesn’t suit you to cry.

Sylph: I should have learned to cry many years ago…If only I had cried more then, I would not be so harsh today.

A horrid thumping sound awoke them from their confessions. Sylph turned and looked up to see Contrast pressed up against the window of the red room. His eyes looked wild and his fangs were gritted. He was banging and scraping against the fortified glass.

Sylph: I want to let him out…

Keshi: you musn’t. Deoxes will suspect you if you do that!

Sylph: the red room…it’s getting stronger by the second…if there’s a limit, that Kecleon will surely die before it’s reached. He was one of the rebels…who betrayed to turn to Deoxes.

Keshi: to go from such company into the jaws of death…the fool.

Sylph: power corrupts many souls…Deoxes has used power as bait, and we’ve all fallen for it. I considered betraying Deoxes and turning to the rebels. Is treachery truly wrong if one betrays an evil power? I would not be betraying my fellow Pokemon because they have all been killed and replaced with morphs. I would desert with my favored commanders so as they would be spared. However, I feel I can do more to hurt Deoxes if I am still close to him, and he still trusts me. But we must be careful. Deoxes may be planning to kill me sooner than I think. A morph in my image would serve his causes better than I, yet I believe he needs my soul intact at this moment for some reason. Still, we must be cautious. I’m prepared to do this. I became Deoxes’ servant when I was merely a level 5 Ralts, and now I am a level 100 Gardevoir who hoped that serving Deoxes would allow me to aid my fellow Pokemon, yet now I find myself a villain, and I know I must atone by doing whatever I can to stop him.

**************************************************
Deoxes sat in the throne room, the Devil’s machine glistening in his eye socket. His body was lifeless; only the Devel’s machine glowed and hummed. A morph sat beside him, staring ahead as if deactivated for the time being.

Devil’s machine: Idle time…I can feel that Kecleon in the red room growing weaker. He may be of use to me alive, if only just. I’ll let Sigahnu feed for just a while longer, until he’s powerful enough, and then both of them will be ready for phase two of my master plan. Giygas, your heir is almost ready to be resurrected again. Just a little bit more quintessence and your servant, my creator, the leader of Giygas’s followers will be alive once more and ready. In the mean time, I will send Sighanu off to confront your enemy Ness once he is at full power. The last Dark missionary has little to fear. Ness will not locate it before Sighanu is fully powered. I have continued to treat Sighanu in the manner you enforced, and in doing so, finished the job you started. He is incredibly powerful, easily our greatest weapon so far. He has already forgotten what it means to be free, and has relinquished himself totally to us. The chances of him betraying our cause are very much non-existent.

Although there was no reply, the Devil’s machine seemed to glow with pride, as if it had been praised by its dead master.

Devil’s machine: Ness…if only you knew…you think I’ve been defeated, but if only you know what you are about to face soon. The Dark missionaries may seem like our final project to you, but we have another card to play...something you’ll never be able to fathom until it’s too late.

Sorry I had to do a freaky one like that. I'll try to make my next update funny. And yes! I'm still going with this fanfic! It's not dead just yet!

A house.
Yahoo! Update! Finally..a great one at that. :)

So a demon is controlling the red room? Huh...I didn't expect the red room to have hid that much importance in the story. X_X

Oh, and by the way..expect the rewrite (and continuation) of EC very soon.

Great update. I'm surprised that Deoxys died. What does Sigahnu look like?

Well he's pretty much dead seeing as the Devil's machine controls his body.

As for Sighanu, think about why the Red room is so important to the Devil's machine. He's obviously created it for a reason. To build up a certain demon's power perhaps?

Not too high, not too low, but juuuust right.
Hey NESSBOUNDER! It's been a while, hasn't it? It was a rather short update, but a good one with many revelations. I thought that there was something in the red room, but I had no idea it was something so important to the plot as that. It was called Sigahnu, wasn't it? From what the Devil's machine said, Sigahnu looks like it's going to be a huge threat to Ness and co. And if Ness is as near to the last dark missionary as I think he is, then that means that they'll have to send Sigahnu very soon. I'm guessing that Contrast will be the last bit of energy that he'll need if he's being sent out so quickly. I sure hope Ness and the rest will be ready for him.

And just who is it that the Devil'l Machine is reviving? It said it was reviving Giygas's heir once again, but who? I know it's not pokey, because although he is the most likely one to be Giygas's heir, happens to be NOT dead. It must be someone who died before, and was powerful, and... Wait, answer me this: Is the heir a character from EarthBound, another game, or someone new. Since this could potentially spoil some stuff for the other readers, could you PM me with it? Thanx. Because depending on that question, I might know who the heir is. heh heh heh....

Anyway, good to see you back, NESSBOUNDER. I'll see you soon, hopefully.

Whoa..this fan-fic is soooo epic! I love it on how its novel like. So much adventures and stuff. and I thought I was the only one to pair up Fox and Ness as best friends (and rivals). This is very good and I'm really enjoying this fic (with all the SMBB hype). Please NESSBOUNDER/Ryanide, keep this fic going. It's very enjoyable and it makes me laugh my butt off XDD.

Good grief, you cast necromancy on this steaming pile of fail? I thought I'd never have to face this awful fan fic again!

Lol. I'll never continue this, sorry, but a hearty thanks to everyone who read it so far. In the future I might write another SSBB humor fanfic if I can get time.

Wait, what just happened here?

Also, NESSBOUNDER, remember me? I think I found your deviantArt account once.

I remember reading this fic about 2 months before I registered and loved it... The only thing I didn't like was that Mr. G&W would go entire chapters without saying a line... :(

That random moron who bumped this made me think about "Nintendo TV Shows" and how the fanfic section of SWF yore was ruled by Smash Bros. humor stories like yours and "Smash Survivor" and stuff...

... honestly, Nintendo TV Shows was the most epic thing ever when I was 14. I'm tempted to write a second part of "The Jaycee Pawman Show" just to bump it.

So yeah, just wanted to drop in to pay my respects. This fic made me waste an entire trip to California to visit my uncle. Thanks for the memories! :)
