Sporadic character updates

Lucas will be a starter just like Ness was, you can count on it.

Anyways, there is no true theory we can make on starters, because there is no one theory that explains everything. Obviously not all revealed characters will be starters, as Snake/Sonic are confirmed NOT to be, and Dedede (and perhaps others) would make much more sense as unlocks.

Also, unlocks =/= secret characters. We can know about a character and still have to unlock it, and we can NOT know about a character and still have to unlock it. The latter would fall under the "secret" category. It's no coincidence the only veterans yet to be announced were secret characters in the past games.

Wouldn't it make sense for the characters we new about from the first trailer (Mario, Wario, Samus, Yoshi, Link, Pit, Metaknight, kirby, pikachu, and fox) to be the starting 10. I realize fox came out in a later video, but he was announced before the smash dojo updates i believe. I also don't think that snake will be a started since he is 3rd party and they will most likely be unlockable.

I absolutely love unlocking stuff, so the perfect starter roster for me would be Mario, Link, Pikachu and Kirby.
The only thing that concerns me is that the smaller the starting roster, the less characters there will be in total.

Sakurai never said that he would do exactly what he did with his Melee site. He said that he knew that information spreads so quickly because of the internet so that he would reveal the characters in the end... So while he probably wont have released all characters by release, its absurd to think that all characters shown on the Dojo before the game's out will be starters. And this doesnt include the third parties...

Dedede himself implies this. 3 characters from one series, ALL as default characters?

He says "just like Smash Fist", as in the Melee website where the unlockables were revealed after the game came out.

I see no reason not to have 3 Kirby characters as starters. We've got Mario, Peach and Bowser all as starters.
In fact, taking King Dedede into account, I have a feeling we might see Ganondorf as a starter, as well. Having the Triforce Trio as starters would be quit fitting, as well as leaving the unlockable slots for Zelda newcomers.

ummm..... i think if were going to use logic it would be logical to suggest that any character on the dojo that has WARNING! CHALLENGER IS APPROACHING is going to be an unlockable just like every smash brother game.

correct that is for the english writing. but in the japanese i.e the more correct one, it read something along the lines of Ike joins the clash or such.

Yes, we had three Mario starters, but we also had two Mario unlockables. I think Sakurai would want to make at least one of his creations unlockables.

It's any character that wasn't in Melee that gets the banner. I don't think anyone was saying that anyway.

We've now waited longer than ever for a new character update. Back in Summer, we were getting a new character almost every week. If we don't get a new character by the end of the week, it will have been 3 whole weeks since King Dedede.

This seperation is a clear sign that there is a limit to how many characters will be revealed before Brawl is released. A character every 3 weeks until release (in Japan) would mean 3 or 4 more.

Also, if Brawl hadn't been delayed, and we'd have seen a new character every 1-2 weeks, that also would have been 3 or 4 more characters, so the limit remains.

This is evidence (although, not really proof) that the characters we're seeing are the starting roster (except maybe the 3rd party characters). This is all still speculation, even if it is founded in logic.

I don't get the hang up with unlockable characters. How much does it matter if they are unlockable or not?! I unlocked all of Melee's characters in a day or two. Thats around 40 hours of locked characters compared to 7 years of playing with all of them! I really don't get worrying or speculating if someone is unlockable or not. If your fav one is locked you know you'll get that one first and the rest in a day or two, and yeah, you'll have fun doing it for the short time it will take. Big Deal! To me only the Total Roster matters.

The idea is, you can work out a rough total roster ballpark figure from the starting roster.
The higher the starting roster is, the higher the total roster will be.

In '64, the unlockables comprised 33%, and in Melee, 44%, so you can safely say that about, say, 40% of the total roster will be unlockable. So, if the starting roster was 25, and if that was 60%, another 40% would make the total roster 42 (rounded off). Get it?

That's why I'm interested in knowing how many characters there are available from the start, at least, I don't know about anybody else.

Personally, I think that ALL the characters we've seen updates for are starters, because otherwise Sakurai wouldn't be spreading the character updates out like he is.

The only flaw in this reasoning is the assumption that the starter/unlockable ratio will be roughly 3-2. There could easily be more unlockables that starters.

Tame as it is, this is technically flaming, and you've missed my point entirley. I'm merely attempting to draw logical conclusions.

Also, I'm no "kid". I have a full-time job and pay my own bills. I don't even live with my parents! Someday, my child, you too will be worthy of such a carefree lifestyle.

Third party characters are going to be unlockables, Sakurai said so in his Journal..

Im starting to think that they might be starters from a business viewpoint. I mean if nintendo is looking for new players then n00b will buy the game and can start off as thier favorite character from other companies.

Actually, we need move updates for veterans. A lot of them still don't any or all of their special moves covered and a good portion still don't have final smashes. But special moves should get higher priority. So far, Link is the most "complete." Because Sakurai revealed all of his special moves, taunts, and FS.

"Sakurai says that having Snake as a hidden character rather than be part of the starting line-up is more fitting for a guest character."

This is from way back in late 2006/early 2007. This is by no means hard evidence that all 3rd party characters will be unlockable.

It seems to me that Sakurai annoucnes a character right before he plans to use them in other updates, trailers, or the demo. Sonic was announced because he was going to be used in the demo. September trailer brought in many characters just announced before it.

Actually, XACE-K was correct. Notice how Meta Knight, Wario, and every other newcomer who appeared in the E3 2006 video lack the banner, but every other newcomer announced on the Dojo has it.
