Yojiro Ogawa, director of the newly released Sonic and the Secret Rings for Nintendo Wii, commented in a recent issue of UK’s Nintendo Official Magazine about Sonic as a possible playable character in the forthcoming Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

"In my personal opinion, it would be great to have Sonic in it," said Ogawa. "But that would really involve Sonic and Nintendo’s management, it’s nothing to do with me!"

Solid Snake, a confirmed fighter in Brawl, is the first third-party, playable character in Smash Bros. history. According to 1-UP.com, Brawl director Masashiro Sakurai stated he wants a roster 40 deep, with 1-2 more non-Nintendo characters.

The idea of involving Sonic in SSBB has been floating about the air for quite sometime now, but no one has been able to confirm whether or not he will be making an appearance . I personally think that Sonic will be a playable character since Snake from Metal Gear Solid is the first 3-party character that has actually been confirm. (as he is in the trailer).
It would be a nice addition to the collection of characters and would give Sonic a great boost in popularity.

Nintendo has actually contacted Sega about putting Sonic in, and are awaiting an answer.
According to the Dojo (I think, not sure), Sonic was the most requested third party character, which has to count for something.

i think the nintendo sega rivalry from the 90's is the biggest reason why sonic is taking soo long to make an appearance in brawl. if he even gets the ok, but if he does..... that will be a celebration day, and that will be just the annoucement!

How is Sonic the most requested thrid-party character when his popularity in Japan is so poor?

like it's surpirsing?, cmon jigs and pichu are very popular in japan, but they didn't just put it in for a japan version. theres no reason to have them in the game at all. but they are there at least sonic will have a huge following for brawl. i guess what im tring to say is maybe it's just the other way around this time for sonic for the U.S.? i dunno....

Like Jesterbox said, the idea of Sonic being in Smash has never been far-fetched. Since before Melee came out, backers for sonic's appearance in the game have been around. Hell, if snake got in(who was also was 'posed to be in melee) got in, then sonic is a shoe in.

Sonic is awesome, and Id love to see him in the game

but with Nintendo only using at most a possible 1-2 other 3rd party characters, sonic seems like a bit of a waste; there are so many other more deserving characters.....but that's just my opinion.

despite the unlikeliness of it, I would prefer Banjo and Kazooie.

I cant think of any more at the moment unfortunately...

Visiting from above.
This is not new. The director of Secret Rings came out and said

"Hey, I don't know anything about what you're talking about, but it would be super-cool!"

like a month ago.
