For basically over a decade now (since shortly after I got Pokémon Red and ended up with Bulbasaur as the first starter I beat the game with), I've wanted to get Pokémon Green. At first, I thought they might actually localize it, but obviously that never happened. When they released Leaf Green for Game Boy Advance, I was kind of excited that there was finally a Green Version, but still, it wasn't the same.

I decided I was going to import it at some point in time. Of course, I decided this over a year ago, and still hadn't gotten around to ordering it.

However, this last Monday (the 15th of November, not the 22nd), I was browsing eBay and found a copy of Pokémon Green with a Game Boy Light.

Since I'm sure half of you are now correcting me and saying "DS Lite", (or maybe not) I'll explain the Game Boy Light.

The Game Boy Light (henceforth referred to as the GBL) was released only in Japan. Essentially, it's a Game Boy Pocket for all intents and purposes, save for the fact that it has a backlight, thus the "Light".

Anyways, after I first read about the GBL, I wanted one. Of all the things for Japan to get and not us, it would have to be a version of the Game Boy that has a backlight, one of the most useful functions for a handheld which is, in retrospect in comparison to the assumed backlights today, incredibly difficult to see.

To my surprise, these two items imported from Japan were $65 shipped. It's not cheap, sure, but it's certainly cheaper than I expected. Given the rarity of the GBL, the potential rarity of Pokémon Green (my research on that matter was unsuccessful, but I think it is somewhat rare), and the fact that both are imported fom Japan, I snatched up the deal immediately.

It got here today, much to my surprise (and happiness).

I got the email saying that the item had been shipped on Thursday, given the estimated shipping time of 5-10 business days, so I was hoping, but not expecting, that it would get here today.

That's one win.

The most awesome thing is, however, that when I opened up the package, much to my surprise, the seller had included the Japanese version of the Pokémon TCG for Game Boy. I already have the English version, and it will be hard to play it, granted; but it's cool to add to my collection, and I can play it anyways. Either way, it's awesome that he included a game that wasn't expected. (I know he didn't make a mistake, he left a brief note in the package about it.)

I had already checked up on his feedback and everything to make sure I wouldn't get ripped off, but it's pretty awesome that I got such a good deal on the whole thing.

Ultimately, I'm thrilled that I finally have a Game Boy Light and a copy of Pokémon Green.

For all those who care to see, here is a picture of the three items:

I remember my TCG game. I made my "Volcanic Eruption"deck and owned Lt. Surge. :D

But anyways, congrats on the deal. Save 'em for maybe another ten years, and you could have a lot of money on your hands.

Wait, if they could put in back lights while they were still selling gameboy pockets then why didn't they add it onto the GBA????
I think it's cause lights suck the life out of batteries way too quickly, and maybe it wasn't too popular of an idea or something. Not sure I guess. They could easily just make a light option but why waste the time if nobody would want to use it? (well technically speaking at least.. I'm not using a light on my GBA, I'd rather use a cell phone light or something like that. That's too much battery life.)

That is awesome!

Had no idea there was a such a thing as the GBL.
On long car trips at night, I would open the car glove box so the light would allow me to play haha.

Backlights actually don't drain that much power as long as you're not stupid and decide to implement them poorly.

*Glares at the Game Gear and Nomad*

The GBL actually has 12 hours of gameplay with the backlight as opposed to 20 without. It's a fairly large difference, but 12 hours is still a significant enough amount of time to make it worth it.

It's more battery-efficient than the original Game Boy and Pocket, anyways.

The Pocket takes 2 AAA batteries and only runs for 10 hours.

The original Game Boy lasts somewhere from 10 to 30 hours, but it takes 4 AA batteries.

The Color lasts about 15 hours with 2 AA batteries.

As long as you don't use a fluorescent tube for your backlighting, like Sega did with both of its handhelds, it won't suck up too much battery life.

(I still love the Game Gear and Nomad, though. Even if they do suck up 6 AA's like crazy.)

Yeah, I originally read about it in some video game history book.

Haha, I remember all of the strategies I used to light my Game Boy. Nowadays I've been using my GBASP, but I may use my DS for GBA and GBL for Game Boy/Game Boy Color. I can't stand that stupid screen-stretch feature that I constantly hit accidentally.

It's just the Pokémon Trading Card Game, based on the actual TCG. It was released everywhere, although it did get a Japan-only sequel.

The best thing about Pokémon Green is the sprites.

They're pretty hilarious and kinda cute at the same time.

Yah, it's very obvious on the DS too. 3 hours on low brightness as opposed to 21 on high?

Well I guess a brightness setting would be different, but still.

12 hours is pretty decent though. I think I'd still do 20 hours now a days anyways. If I were a kid I would probably use it simply because I would take it with me to trips everywhere and when it turned dark.. no more gameboy and I pretty much had to bear the rest of the trip in the car.. very boring stuff.

this was especially true with the gba which was when i used it the most. when it turned dark on hour 14 hour trip up to New York.. I became bored... FAST.

i think i had that portable light made by madcatz next trip though so it was better
