He was a powerful monster in skill, build, and magic....but his heart was always soft and fragile towards his family, his people and, for the most part, even humans. He was initially a great leader who became weak. Even without holding a royal and invaluable leader position anymore, I don't think he'd take a revelation like this well at all.....
