She might be popular in Japan (although I have my doubts), but Samurai Shodown is a pretty obscure series. Certainly nothing like Persona or DQ.
Idon already beat me to the punch.

As said she could be picked for the same reason as:ulthero:was to appease the East especially given her popularity on par of Mai, Terry, Kyo and Haohmaru.

You're talking about Dragon Quest though, a top 3 series in Japan alongside Super Mario and Pokemon. I just don't see Sakurai and Nintendo thinking "oh, we need an SNK rep... uh, let's go with her." They're looking for characters and franchises that stand on their own merits. Samurai Shodown has never sold much, in Japan or elsewhere.

Fair enough. I admit I don't know what I was even on to compare SNK to Dragon Quest of all things. ;P

Playing as the Smash Legacy XP characters is making me want them in Ultimate.
Really now? Who's in it?

So I finished DBZ and I should move on to Super... but... I feel like taking a bit of a break so I won't burn myself out of DB.

So, anyone got a suggestion on what to watch next? So far, I watched all of MHA, and the OG DB and DBZ.
Yu Yu Hakusho or Hunter X Hunter.

Speaking as a huge DB fan, Super only gets good when Goku Black shows up. Tournament of Power's a good arc too, tuned in every week for that ****. I like Hit too.

IM GONNA REACH FOR THE STARS
LIKE A MILLION FACES....I RECOGNIZE THEM ALL!

What other franchises are there on the level or at least close to Dragon Quest, Mario and Pokemon that could be among the final 2 DLC?

In terms of West I easily see Crash or Doom Slayer (Due to the impact it left on FPS). I recall Tales of Symphonia is rather big so I could see that too. I would still be betting on Lloyd.

In other news, Gamexplain Jon is supposedly posting Otters.

You know what that means.
He then posted on Resetera that "Otters aren't a hint"--but they always were, so not sure why he's clarifying that. Also, I can't find where he originally posted otters.

EDIT: Just found the post, as well as what I believe he was responding to. It seems like Jon just posted a funny otter pic, and then people took that as a hint, which he then clarified it was not. I think we should get otter hyped when multiple insiders post otters, and don't clarify it.

The bird hint clearly relates to Mega Man .EXE. He's just gonna use his Falzar form for his Final Smash or something.

More of a Gregar fan though.

I'd also keep Resident Evil in mind.

Also, neither Banjo-Kazooie nor Persona is on the list, so there's also that.
Yeah, I was just naming the top sellers in Japan. For all we know the rest of the Fighters Pass will be characters with games that are sub-1M in Japan.

whats the best tinfoil hat theory you can make up that 1 person on the planet probably believes:

sans or megalovania won't get in because it originates from an EarthBound ROM hack and Nintendo hates ROM hacks. :secretkpop:

Popularity-wise? High request-wise? Any other candidates?
1563177140987.png

Am I wrong? Am I wrong? Just because he won't get in for being non-vidya doesn't mean he can't fill out popularity, requests, and sales. Have you seen FighterZ? ****s on the street and everyone loves it. this is totally just an excuse for me to post a pic of goku and see how michael reacts on the sight of him alone

I got to bed at a decent hour for once. Slept for 5 solid hours but then woke up randomly at 3:30 and I've been wide awake for nearly 30 minutes.

RIP me

Did some more drawing this week, nothing too crazy, but I needed to get back to pencil and paper, so I was happy about that.

With Monster Hunter, I think it's important to remember that characters aren't the only way franchises are celebrated and honored. To Sakurai, stages, assist trophies, and bosses are more on equal footing to playable characters than how fans primarily see it. For Monster Hunter, the most iconic aspect of the games is the monsters, so including a Rathalos boss as its representation makes sense. Just as Minecraft's most iconic element would be becoming a stage (though, that looks like that may not be the case). I think Sakurai looks at the highest selling franchises, fans desires, and upcoming promotional games, and tries to find the best way to include as many as possible, while maintaining their most iconic elements, playable characters being one of many ways of accomplishing that.

2000 points on SMM2 with only 3 levels out baby.

Granted, most of those points came from my first level, but hey, that just mean it's a dang good first level! That, and my Metroid level seem to have got a decent level of likes on it, so i'm happy.

Same could be said for Animal Crossing and despite that, past Brawl it got its charactar.

Beyond that Monster Hunter also focused heavily on the HUNTER part of MONSTER HUNTER. Literally the entire loop of that game is you the Hunter improving both your skills and your equipment to take down these monsters. That's why the covers are always a person in armor AND a monster.

Tbh another iconic part of Minecraft is the crafting, building and, what Sakurai mentions, the resource-gathering + how even a stone can be put to use later, things Steve could represent.

While a stage could have Steve doing stuff in the background, it’d also be nice to play as him and with Minecraft’s stuffs.

I don’t really think there’s a “best” way to represent a franchise regarding what category of stuff they get in Smash.

I'd love more people with giant oversized weapons...

But they'd be humans with bladed weapons and we all know how well those are received.

With Villager, as with all the exceptions that are usually brought up, they're always Nintendo characters. I highly doubt we'll ever get a generic enemy for a third party character, for instance. I feel the same for nonspecific characters (for lack of a better word, trying to avoid using the word generic), though Dragon Quest Hero does open that door, even if a tiny bit.

The main crux of my point, however, remains--playable characters are not the end all be all, even though that's what fans mostly talk about. While Monster Hunter could be a character, I'm certainly not expecting it.

Watch something that's very different in genre from Dragon Ball, such as the psychological thriller, "Monster." It's about a Japanese doctor who saves a boy's life at the last minute, but that boy ends up being a "monster". It's a show that does an excellent job of deconstructing the meaning of choices we make in our lives, and the critical state of human nature.

Just quote Nightmare when talking to them.

"You conceited, wretched human!"

And here I am, in my bout of insomnia, watching ice hockey videos in the middle of July at 5 in the morning.

I should stop replaying Pokemon games instead of working on my backlog.

A while ago I finished a White replay but just now I finished the postgame content. BW2 was an improvement on the original game, but I still feel like BW1 has value as a soft reboot of sorts; there hasn't been another game like that since gen 1 with only one region's worth of Pokemon. And from my 35 hour playthrough, the last 10 hours were postgame stuff, so I definitely feel like it has plenty to do. After HGSS and Platinum, the gen V games are definitely my favorite in the series. Ah, the halcyon days of the DS era...

Also, you know that one Pokemon you always default on to get you out of a tight spot? Turns out Stone Edge and Acrobatics coming off of Archeops is very, very useful for taking down annoying Pokemon at 40-50% HP. Of course it OHKO'd Alder's Volcarona but freaking Boufflant was the one tearing through my entire team. Don't even remember how I beat it.

Also Emboar rules and was underappreciated in its time. It's by far the best gen 5 starter since it isn't a bland monotype and has a movepool to speak of.

Team was Emboar/Jellicent/Archeops/Excadrill/Vanilluxe/Leavanny. When I started I named them after the Ultimate newcomers... so Emboar is Incineroar.

A phoenix is a mythological bird from Europe.

Do I win?

Edit: but does anyone have the image they used to hint at Banjo? To compare the finer details of the puzzle.

If we ever do get a third Capcom character, i’ll Be really interested in what they pick. Resident Evil is Capcom’s third pillar franchise, but doesn’t really overlap with Nintendo and Smash’s fan base all that much. Ace Attorney was huge on the GBA and NDS, but has never really been a top seller. Monster Hunter is a huge seller AND big on Nintendo platforms specifically, but Sakurai has never done a 100% customizable avatar character. From what I understand, Robin and The Hero have defaulted appearances and abilities (which Smash is mostly based on). Monster Hunter doesn’t have anything like that to my knowledge. (Of course, you could be like Arlo who thinks you’ll be able to customize everything about said hypothetical Monster Hunter just like the games, but I doubt Sakurai would put forth the resources for something like that. All the different weapons would need to balance with each other and each version would have a completely different place in the meta and you could probably make one that’s super OP and it would technically be like, 12 characters in one..... I just don’t see it happening like that.

Persona also has a separate fanbase from Nintendo/Smash, but Joker was still well-received. Same with Ace Attorney and sales.

As for Monster Hunter, isn't Villager fully customizable? And I don't see a point in arguing balance when there's no moveset around, it's literally the "Ridley is too big!" argument.

I understand this. It still doesn’t make it easier, or even possible, to decide which one he’d pick. In fact, each DLC character so far would point to a completely different one.

I forgot about Villager. But even then, they have a standard ability set. You only customize their appearance. I’m not saying a MH won’t happen. I’m just saying if it does, it won’t be a customizable fighter like Arlo (popular puppet Nintendo-tuber) says it will be. He’s generally very practical when it comes to game design and business decisions, but I don’t think he realizes how ridiculous the idea is.

I was searching through the files of Ultimate and found something interesting. Nothing groundbreaking, but interesting nonetheless. Just like in the Smash Bros. Ultimate sound test, the Phantom Thieves' voice lines are all in the same place as Joker's voice lines. What is interesting though is that the file names do not refer to the Thieves, and they instead refer to Joker. For example, Futaba's line: "Heheheh! They're done for!" is named "vc_jack_006_win01"
