He got in Smash. He pretty much won the villain race against Kirby villains.

Hard to pity people who bought the pass and are disappointed when Sakurai literally said to buy it at our risk.

There aren't really any "universally popular" fighters that could be added as newcomers at this point. Every character is going to have their detractors, and regardless of who gets in, there's going to be a decent number of people whining about it because it wasn't the incredibly specific character that they wanted.

With in the base game, it's naturally going to be pretty hard to add characters as well-known and beloved as them. Nobody said all DLC characters are going to be A-list characters, so it's not like Nintendo was false advertising.

Dragon Quest is a series that sadly gets too overlooked outside of Japan in general, so I sadly expected the western smash fandom to go hard on it just for being unknown territory in their eyes.

Doh hopefully things seem to be changing for the better in regards to the western DQ fandom, since so far DQXI S could become the FE Awakening of DQ, which alongside the Smash content and push from both Nintendo, Square and DQ fans worldwide could finally make the series come close to Fire Emblem and start getting less scenarios of region-locked products.

The fact the western fandom succeeded at giving the Switch ports of the Erdrick trilogy an english translation seems like the first of many great things to come after all this push.

There would definitely be complaints for Waluigi's inclusion, considering that, he's already an assist trophy (which is an unprecedented change to happen in the middle of the game's life-span, and might be viewed as the fandom getting their way through sheer whining), he doesn't have much material to work with aside from combining elements from a bunch of unrelated games, and he's not an incredibly important character to the Mario series. (he was created solely because Wario needed a doubles partner for tennis, and his main defining characteristic is his unending hatred of Luigi)

He could be an interesting character, but he's definitely not universally popular.

EDIT: The same thing could go for Steve (as we saw during the period where it was uncertain who, if anyone, Microsoft would get in Smash), Tails (people would complain because we didn't get Shadow, Eggman, or Knuckles - try as I might, I couldn't fit "& Knuckles" in there smoothly), Crash (people who are unfamiliar with the games would complain that he'd have a bland moveset), or Sans. (especially since he'd be getting in over characters like Shovel Knight, Shantae, and other indie characters)

Choosing characters just to minimize the vocal hate is a bad business move. Most rabid haters either complain about the content they won't buy or purchase it anyway. It's better appealing to fans rather than adding characters for the sake of shutting up internet randos.

I've said this before but I really hate how whenever a new character is revealed we always go into this cycle of complaining about the haters

People are dumb, there are always going to be complaints about the new character, there is nothing interesting to be gained from talking about haters

It'd be ok if it was just once or twice we talked about it, but no these discussions always go on for like a week after the reveal

It's even worse since so many people get on their high horse to explain why the character is great even though half the time they're preaching to the choir, these haters are a minority

It's almost as bad as all the "Imagine showing this to someone 10 years ago!" posts

My friend, I envy you for not living what I have lived for years.

Because I’ve found myself with way, waaay too many people who would despise to see Crash Bandicoot getting in Smash instead of Doomguy, Rayman or many other popular picks. Even though most are probably as equally likely as Crash Bandicoot is.


Again, a huge part of the Smash fandom tends to do many kinds of dumb stretches to “deconfirm” the stuff they don’t like or isn’t what they ask for. I lived it as a Metroid, Dragon Quest and Crash fan through the years.

While I don't think this pass has been bad and deserves some of the flak it's been getting recently, I can also understand why people would be disappointed. Setting aside whether or not a character "deserves" to get in, 3/4 of these DLC characters haven't been highly requested. Actually, they've hardly been requested at all. The one who's come closest is Hero, who comes from a series a decent amount of people wanted in Smash. No one could agree on who to add though, so Hero was a bit of a suprise as well.

I guess a lot of people who pre-purchased the pass were expecting characters whose names get thrown around a lot. Now it's all on them for purchasing the pass ahead of time and getting disappointed when there was nothing that suggested what the characters would be like, but if someone was waiting before they bought anything, I couldn't be mad at them if they said they weren't enjoying the reveals so far.
