Personally, my issue with fanservice is less the idea in general, but more how it's used. Because apparently as long as you show a little boob or midriff it saves you from having to make a decent product, essentially a crutch. And it's been getting worse these days.
I agree.
I also strongly dislike when developers basically do whatever their fanbase wants them to do.
It shows a lack of artistic integrity that I find deeply upsetting.
An obvious example being Fire Emblem Awakening's fanservice "Scramble" DLC.

There people out there that take the whole Waifus and husbandos thing seriously? I see it as a joke for someone that like a character a lot.

Ness only speaks the language of F-airs. :p
Ness is so easy to play. Seriously, when your Bthrow is a kill move and you have a PK Fire that traps people in it, this is what I call an easy character. The only hard with him is the PK Thunder, and even that with training can be easy.

:4ness: with :4yoshi: have been so buffed that they now feel disgusting to play. Seriously, I tried both of them and feel dirty to even have played them. Even Diddy isn't that disgusting, even though he was already disgusting to play since Brawl.

I like anime/manga where there are characters beating the crap out of each other. If there are occult or tons of mythological themes, I'll like it better.

I agree some anime/manga have too much fanservice, though.

Some of the best anime/manga I've watched/read: Durarara!!, Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist (manga/Brotherhood anime) and Death Note.

Personally, my issue with fanservice is less the idea in general, but more how it's used. Because apparently as long as you show a little boob or midriff it saves you from having to make a decent product, essentially a crutch. And it's been getting worse these days.
Sex sells.

That's the most reasonable explanation and since most mangaka and anime studios want money, they go the easy route.

Considering all the things people do over the internet, that's the thing that you can't fathom?
Yes, it's absolutely a thing. I can provide links if you want proof.

To answer your question, yes indeed. There are a lot of people way too obsessed with fictional characters for their own good.

But of course, the terms are used as jokes as well.

Really, have none of you been caught in Ness's Fair->Fair->Fair combo? It's frustrating. :urg:
It's more frustrating to die to a little boy with psychic powers that throws you behind him. Seriously, people are yelling on the "Hoo Hah" while I'm screaming about Ness Bthrow that is too damn strong to begin with.

So there's an exploit to boot Game Boy Color ROMs (not original though) on your 3DS using a download, SD card, Internet Browser, and a downloaded GBC Virtual Console title:

Well, at least, it's DLC and you don't have to buy it.

Still, I won't deny that sort of content really divided the FE fanbase. And for a good reason. Fire Emblem used to be one of the few anime-like SRPG series without having too many anime tropes, but FEA destroyed that reputation. Even I was a bit surprised that they went that far, but like I said, it's DLC, meaning it's entirely optional.

Personally, I don't mind the "anime-ification" that much, but I can see why people are upset with the change. However, it can't be denied that it helped the franchise a lot, given how the game essentially saved the series from discontinuation, with all the good and bad things that come with that.

How can he catch me when I'm shield-rolling away? :troll:
96e.gif

Rolling and spot dodging master race.

How rare your kind are.
It's one thing to really like a character, it's another to want to make children with them...
I just don't get it.
Well I'm not that rare. There's plenty of people that are not in *word that causes hate and laughs*.
But in this world, we talk more about the negative than the positive.

I love Awakening, but I don't like the amount of fanservice there is in the game.
I'm not talking Lucina disguising as Marth, or anything like that. I'm talking about the fanservice fanservice.
As it stands, the Scramble DLC's are the only ones I'll never get.
It deeply saddens me to think that at one point there was going to be official artwork (I don't know if they used it, I know it exists) of Lucina in a bright red bikini. What even.

This is the perfect .gif to describe how I feel when I continually pick :4yoshi:.

What's worse is that I only picked up :4yoshi: in 3DS/Wii U after I noticed his buff. He's still a cool character.

There are two kinds of fanservice: sexual and non-sexual.

Originally, the term was regularly used to refer to the non-sexual kind. The one to shout-out to long date fans. Priam, Lucina disguised as Marth, past titles' characters as DLC are good examples of this.

Nowadays, people associate fanservice as the gratuitous sexual stuff.

And yeah, I think they went a bit too far with the sexual fanservice. Like I said, however, it's entirely optional, so I think it's more fair that way. Still quite out of place for a series like Fire Emblem, considering the previous 12 titles, but I guess things evolve and change over time, for the best and for the worst.

IS had to do something because Fire Emblem was dying and as sex sells, they tried that. With success. It wouldn't surprise me if we see some fanservice of that amount in FE14 too.

I agree with you, except that you implied that sexual fanservice is an "evolution".
If anything, I think it's the opposite; if all we care about or are satisfied with sexual appeal, then we're really just reverting to our primal selves. I would like Fire Emblem to have a bit more class than that, you know?

Evolution in the sense of changing and becoming different over time, not getting necessarily better, as that is entering the realm of subjectivity.

Yep, I know all about FE13 being the game that saved the franchise from a possible indefinite hiatus.

The new FE having fanservice wouldn't be surprising, though I hope they tone down a bit and slowly return to the series' roots.

But I'd guess that if those were removed, the series would lose a sizeable amount of fans: the rabid weebs obsessing over waifus and all that.

Some people did get into the series with Awakening and found out to like SRPGs, to the point of trying older FE games. Those are likely to remain more loyal to the franchise, regardless of the game having fanservice.

Yep, especially the people who really like Tharja because she's Sexual Fanservice: The Character.

Yeah, I'm in the camp that hopes FE If returns the series back to it's roots. Awakening lacked core concepts that made the series a tactical phenomenon such as Fog of War, ballistas, ACTUAL villains, etc.

The new one looks promising.

I hope there are more different requirements to win. 'Win by rout' or 'Defeat the Commander' is getting boring every time. Why no 'Survive for this many turns', 'Keep this unit alive' or anything like that. Pretty sure they did that in previous FEs.

So it was a devolution since it is bad?
Whether the series got better or worse is entirely subjective. You'll see both opinions.

I didn't mean evolution in a sense of getting better.

(Sometimes, I feel like I'm too figurative with words... :ohwell:)

Yep, especially the people who really like Tharja because she's Sexual Fanservice: The Character.
Tharja is the worst character in the game and one of my least liked characters ever. Her personality is just disturbing and it baffles me how people like her.

Same here.

Tone down the fanservice and bring the more complex aspects from previous games like Radiant Dawn. Then again, FEA was designed as a gateway game, so perhaps that's why the difficulty was amped down and the gameplay simplified.

The new game does show some promise, though. I hope the East vs. West conflict is carried similarly to the Laguz Alliance vs. Daein theme in Radiant Dawn, with the player controlling both warring factions and the conflict not being present as merely black and white. Iwata did say there were new elements and the players' decisions would influence the game somehow, which I liked to hear.

I love FE Awakening, it's one of my favorite games.
But I have a feeling that if I were to play one of the more acclaimed ones, I would get this sensation of "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE" just from what I'm hearing about them.
