I love FE Awakening, it's one of my favorite games.
But I have a feeling that if I were to play one of the more acclaimed ones, I would get this sensation of "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE" just from what I'm hearing about them.

Download Blazing Sword off of eShop Wii U. That game and Sacred Stones are great gateways into the traditional series without taking away too much from the familiar gameplay style in Awakeing. I prefer to use Sacred Stones as a transition but Blazing Sword works fine.

Well, since the games I play are not really "Anime stuff" (seriously, my favorite game is DuckTales), I don't have a real opinion on FE and it's "fanservice".
I only played one FE. It was the remake of the one with on the DS and I sucked at it. Seriously, I suck at strategy games. And since dying is real in this game, you pretty much know how much Marth and his friends will die with me.

Oh, and fanservice in general ? I hate it. But apparently, it sales a lot, so it's normal to see it.

On the topic of fan(dis)service: I think most who know me would be surprised when I say that the objectification of sexuality is a huge societal problem. Mostly because I'm viewed as a strictly non-interventionist libertarian. And I am.

But following the virtues ought to be a goal of any person with a basic moral sense. Obviously, our first obligation is to ourselves and our own goodness. Now, fanservice (the sexual kind) explicitly creates someone or something as an object whose primary feature is their sexuality, who, being stripped of other features or watered down in those regards, influence men and women to see more and more only that in all other things and people. It separates the humanity from the sex, to merely an object to be used for our own selfish gratification. It generates men and women treating each-other like trash, since they are so dehumanized and the parties involved are so sexually focused. It sickens me, and I hate myself for my own objectification, in my thoughts and in my words, for it was overlong 'til I noticed its influence on me. Yet notice I did, and know now do I the sad state of the culture of Japan, with marriage and interest in marriage (particularly among women) on the steady decline, suicide and mental illness of all sorts skyrocketing, and an insane obsession with pornography among young Japanese males. Heck, their empire used to be rhetorically focused almost exclusively on how great and good the family unit is and should be. Now it's focused on going through the motions and obeying our wise overlords. Meanwhile, the family is in shambles.
