For reasons administration refuses to directly address, today, our school wouldn't let us dress up for Halloween. I mean, to be honest, no big deal for me. But a lot of people were kind of upset with the whole thing, especially since "well its not Halloween" was the only answer they'd give us. And they threatened with suspension if you came dressed up, labeling it as insubordination.

Then today, while here, I found that it wasn't a district rule, but just a school rule, and that every other school is allowing dressing up, just not my school. (information obtained through communications at the other schools, not just rumours.)

Now, I'm kind of upset about this. Most of the blame has been put on the new assistant principal, who's made a huge reputation for herself by being the biggest ***** the school's ever seen, dress coding even rolled up sleeves (mind you, this is a public community school.)

But I find it hard to believe one person in the school staff, not even the principal, could make that happen.

It would've been better if they could give us a legitimate reason, but they refused to. Idk. Just irritates me. Schools are becoming a place where they practically put a rule against fun.

Anyone know of Bess? It's such a *****.

Heh, I totally forgot about Halloween. We don't even have Halloween over here.
I thought it was usually not allowed at schools besides elementary schools.
You should be glad you don't have to wear uniforms.

You're complaining because you can't wear a funny costume?

Try going to a mormon school and be atheistic. That **** sucks.

wow really they normally let you dress up?

lol in australia ive never heard of dressing up, for any calendar holiday, being allowed in schools. I find it hard to feel sorry for you if this is a secondary school... i mean just coz the younger kids might wanna dress up shouldnt be a reason for the older kids to be allowed to :/

Right here, not quite now
When authorities (principal, mom) have said something and then realize that it might've been a bad decision, they keep arguing because they don't want to admit they're wrong.

But maybe she just likes to *****.

A little off topic question to DJBrowny: Is it true that there are groups of Australian students that hang out and don't ever talk to each other in between groups?

Cry moar.

At our school we always have to wear uniform. The only exception is the occasional mufti day, which happens around two times a year, and you have to pay to do so. One kid at our school got suspended for being caught with his top button undone three times...

You're proving Teran's complaints about teenagers that all we do is PMS...

A guy showed up today dressed as a storm-trooper. And some weeaboo ****** girl was dressed as some anime character.

I laughed really hard when I saw the storm trooper and almost cried at the weeaboo.

I guess so, a phrase exists 'iPod Lunch' where you see it at school and at public food courts where groups of freinds will all be listening to mp3 players and just not talk. (ok just coz urbandictionary doesnt have it doesnt mean it doesnt exist ive seen it used in printed media before)

I dont think its unique to australia though :/

My school is weird about Halloween. The rules are as follows (paraphrasing):

Costumes are allowed. Nothing that covers or altars the face. Nothing that covers the head. Nothing that makes it difficult to recognize you.

So basically... nothing.

But, my school is fairly large (3,600+ students), and it's extremely easy to get away with this kind of stuff, so no one really follows these kinds of rules anyway.

hey mountain, four words.

Chill. The. Hell. Out.

I wasn't being a whiney teenager about not being able to dress up. I was expressing my thoughts towards an administration who feels the need to tell us "because we said so" without a single perfectly good reason.

Way to stereotype, eh? It's a blog for a reason. I'm not here to be informative. Just to start idle chitchat.

How exactly would they enforce something like that, though...? Obviously if you're dressing up as like, Pacman or something, the costume is obvious...but what if you're dressing up as a person? How can they declare for sure that it is a costume and not just the clothes you decided to wear that day?

I guess that's kind of a lawyer-ish approach to it, and the school would probably do whatever it wants anyways, but...it seems like it would be hard to prove that you're dressing up if you're not wearing any typical costume signs, like a wig, mask, or an odd accessory (like a stethoscope or a gavel). And it's altogether possible that someone wearing something odd that day by chance could get suspended for doing nothing wrong.

Well, I don't really think it's "wrong" to wear costumes anyways, but it wouldn't be disobeying them either.

I have some pretty stupid school stories too.

When I was in third grade, my elementary school decided it was a good idea to let the fifth graders write a school song. Not only is it the most annoying thing ever, but the lyrics are horrible. It kept going on about how it was a "special school" full of "special girls and boys". Not to mention it hyped up the school and acted like it was an awesome place when it was really sub-par at best.

My high school once decided it was a good idea to waste good ol' taxpayer money and get metal letters to put on the building spelling out the school name. They weren't large enough to actually see from very far away, and there were signs elsewhere that would've indicated where you are BEFORE you're right about to walk into the school. A week after they were put up, a bunch of the letters were randomly stolen...not all of them, but random letters throughout so it messed up the name.

While I don't condone the people stealing the letters, it was stupid of the school to waste money on them in the first place. One of my friends thought it was quite ironic, and while bored doodled (quite well) a picture of two people; one representing karma, one representing the school. Karma was slapping the school and holding the letters. He decided to photocopy it and post a bunch up around the school in a protest of the letters and in order to express how stupid it was to buy them in the first place.

He didn't get in trouble for posting them around the school, no one really gave a crap, in fact. But one of the police officers saw that he posted them up and interrogated him about the letters, CONVINCED that his posters meant he had some knowledge of what happened to the letters.

Well you do get to wear your own clothes to school.

I've worn uniform since the age of 4-18, so yeah you've got it easy. Besides, a school can make its own rules if it really wants to, if it isn't unreasonable.

"Don't dress up on Halloween because we said so" sounds like perfectly normal school administrative behaviour to me. Maybe because Halloween isn't seen as all that culturally important here, so maybe that's why I see it this way.

Still, your school telling you what to do because they said so is fair game. Your school owns you, and your first amendment rights or whatever the **** is referenced as human rights do not apply.

School owns you, they make the rules, and there's nothing you can do about it.
Welcome to life.
