I've been playing Melee, but I'm not as tech-savy as you may think I am. I know most, if not all of the basic moves, and very few (and I mean FEW) advanced moves.

I've been training with level 8 CPUs, playing against my brother (who mains Sheik), and even having a couple of FFAs with my little cousins (I am really deprived of serious Melee competitions as you can tell).

I've been to some tournies before if that counts for anything (MKDD and Yugioh Regionals back when I was young), I so I have a firm grasp of what the tournament could be like.

Also, I'm maining Fox.

With that said, do you have any advice that I can take going into this tourney?

Prepare to lose, thats the best advice.

Unless its a gamestop thing or somthing along those lines, then prepare to be frustrated.

Brace yourself for ****.

Really, just don't give up. Make sure you get in as many friendlies with the good people as you can.

Don't practice w/ level 8 computers. If you must use computers, use level 1's so that you can practice your combo, and improve your tech-savy-ness.

Also, avoid free for all's might help a bit. I find that playing free for alls with noobs, make me worst lol, but that could just be me.

Since your using Fox, definitely practice those wavedashes, and the shine's million uses.

To be honest, you can't really improve too much (aside from tech skill) on your own. The only way to be a better player (aka winning more) is to play good competition, which is what your lacking.

Tournament's being held at my local Gamestop...they're doing a Melee tournament a week before the Brawl release to have fun I guess.

I am very determined to win.

Well, if the tournament is being held at that Gamestop, then that probably means they have some regulars who play Melee or something I'd assume. My thoughts? Branch out and try and find these people. Hang out at the store and see if anyone signs up while you're there. If they do, ask to play a couple rounds.

I know, this seems insane, but its how I got started. My local game store held a tournament, and while I was there someone else signed up for it. Since the only competition I'd ever had was my brother, I figured "Why not try?" so I asked to play a few rounds. He lived within walking distance of the store, luckily, so we went over and played. Through him, I met some of the other competitors, and by the time of the tournament, I knew at least six or seven of the players going in, and had played for hours with them beforehand!

Of course, I had started a month before the tournament, rather than a week, so I had a bit more time to work with...

Other than that, I'd suggest playing your bro or any other human you can, just to un-familiarize yourself with CPUs. As mentioned before, only play Lv.1 CPUs to work on your technical play, such as Wavedashing and L-canceling.

The main thing to do is go in willing to learn, even if you think you are the best player there. A good player is constantly learning from tournament experience, win or lose.

If it so happens that there is someone way better than you there, don't be afraid to ask them for some help on your gamplay. The majority of smashers are cool with helping others, so unless this person is a total ****, you could learn even more.

It's in Texas at my local Gamestop...

If you think this is like a regular Melee tournament that dishes out cash prizes, it's not. I asked the manager what the prize would be and he said that it would be a Mario 5-inch action figure. Lol.

Anyways, tournament is TOMORROW. Any tips?

Well, I thought the tournament would go 1v1, so I prepared with 1v1 fights.
As aspected, it was a FFA, 2-minute Items on high match.

I lost my first to a Luigi player; the stage (I forgot what it was called) had bricks in the middle so I couldn't do very much (comboing and such).

So the tournament ended after TEN minutes, and the guy running it was...whoa, that went fast. Is that suppose to go that fast?

So we ended up doing another tournament (5 stock instead of 2 minutes), and I got the stage I wanted, Final Destination. I ended up being one of the two last characters in my bracket, but when I tried to recover, the Samus player threw a Bomb-omb that appeared.

It was ok at best, but it wasn't the type of tournament I expected. You could go on and say that any good player can win in any situation, but the fact that items were put on diminishes the skill of the good player and puts everyone on the same level. It's like giving every football player steroids when you were working your butt off without it.

Anyways, I'm done ranting. This melee tournament sucked.
