After testing the waters with re-creating Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I've decided to go ahead and re-create a game with all sorts of missed potential. I'm of course referring to the mobile game Mario Kart Tour, the game that famously didn't have Luigi at launch and charged $40 for Diddy Kong. So, I wanted to do it justice as a Mario Kart mobile game and make it into a celebration of Mario's history.

  • Coins are used to by Warp Pipes, which contain racers, karts and gliders
    • Green Pipes (1,000 Coins) pretty much always draw from the Common rarity
    • Gold Pipes (5,000 Coins) are more likely to draw from the Super rarity
    • Rainbow Pipes (10,000 Coins) are more likely to draw from the High-End Rarity
  • You can earn coins through gameplay through the following methods:
    • Picking them up through races (either via an Item Box or picking up loose coins on the course)
    • Performing tricks
    • Hitting other racers with item
    • Mini-turbos
    • Dash Panels
    • Having certain kart combinations that automatically increase your Coin count

How it works
  • Naturally, you start of with the nitro course course the Tour is themed after. In this case, the Tour is themed around this game's Mario Circuit.
  • Every subsequent retro course is chosen based on the nitro course of the Tour. Since this is out first Tour, feel free to pick any retro course within the following criteria:
    • An SNES course
    • An N64 course
    • A GBA course
    • A GCN course
    • A DS course
    • A Wii course
    • A 3DS course
    • A Wii U course
    • 2 misc. retro courses (but you can't pick 2 from the same game for this slot)
  • Tours are also elimination-based, with 8 players racing against each other
    • To move onto Race 2, you need to place in 6th or better
    • To move onto Race 3, you need to place in 4th or better
    • To move onto Race 4, you need to place in 2nd or better
    • Race 4 itself is a 1v1 race
  • The courses that follow Race 1 are also split among multiple paths. Whichever path you travel depends on a coin flip after each race.
    • If you get heads, you move along the upper path. The coin flip after Race 2A onwards can take you to either 3A (heads) or 3B (tails).
    • If you get tails, you move along the lower path. The coin flip after Race 2B onwards can take you to either 3C (heads) or 3D (tails).

For starting roster... maybe 12 racers, I guess?
(You would unlock more as the game goes on)

Also... how should we deal with clone characters?
(You know... ones of Mario, Peach, Luigi, and others wearing outfits which would be perfect as alternate skins like what Yoshi has with his colours in Mario Kart 8)
Most of the clone characters would be alternate costumes (with the exception of Metal Mario and Dry Bowser).

When I said “initial roster size,” I was primarily referring to how many characters the game itself would have at launch, not necessarily factoring in how unlocking characters would work.

Anyway, 12 might be too small for a modern Mario Kart roster, mobile game or not. So I was thinking around 30, the same number that Mario Kart 8 launched with on the Wii U.

I'm going to be fairly tempered and say 24, with the caveat that there'll be a lot more going forward, and that certain iconic groups (such as the Koopalings, who took up a lot of spots in MK8's roster, for example) could come later in large-scale updates. It still gives plenty of space for the game to have some cool picks here and there, but leaves plenty of space open for future inclusions.

Job 1:

20 characters

Not too many, not too little. Let’s get a start here with core faces, and the first tour. Tour also started with around this many, and it would be best to make specific jobs for Common, Super, and High-End characters so we don’t just get a flood of unique characters straight away.

Job #2: Submit a roster of 30 characters

Two nickels.jpg You know, if I had a nickel for every Mario Kart creation thread where a 30-character roster was one of the first jobs, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice, right?

Anyway, this is pretty self-explanatory. This starting roster of 30 characters is going to be updated over time, but for now let's focus on adding Mario Kart mainstays. Here's my roster:

Luigi
Peach
Daisy
Rosalina

Let us not forget this is Mario Kart Tour, and we need to construct this roster in mind with the gacha, different character alts and updating the roster. We’ll be able to include deep-cuts eventually, but this is where clones can shine as there will be hundreds of slots available.

Job #3: How should the gacha work?

Since we're recreating a mobile game, this was pretty much the elephant in the room, but I wanted to get the initial roster of characters out of the way first. In your opinion, how can we make the gacha more relatively fair? My idea was this:
  • Coins are used to by Warp Pipes, which contain racers, karts and gliders
    • Green Pipes pretty much always draw from the Common rarity
    • Gold Pipes are more likely to draw from the Super rarity
    • Rainbow Pipes are more likely to draw from the High-End Rarity
  • You can earn coins through gameplay through the following methods:
    • Picking them up through races (either via an Item Box or picking up loose coins on the course)
    • Performing tricks
    • Hitting other racers with item
    • Mini-turbos
    • Dash Panels
    • Having certain kart combinations that automatically increase your Coin count
  • Essentially, Coins are the replacement for the points you earn in canon Tour. Earning a certain number of coins earns you a Grand Star, which nets you gifts
  • You can also buy coins with real-life money, but that's the only thing buyable with real-life money
    • $1.99 for 500
    • $5.99 for 2000
    • $12.99 for 5000
    • $19.99 for 10,000
    • $26.99 for 50,000
    • $39.99 for 75,000
    • $49.99 for 100,000
  • If you pull the same racer, kart and/or glider multiple times, it instead increase their base Coin count.

Okay, so it looks like mine was the only gacha submission (go figure)...

Job #4: How should we handle new courses?

The main draw of Mario Kart Tour's new courses is that you take a "tour" around real-life cities. Do you want to keep that direction, or would you like to try something else? Personally, I'd like to take the "tour cities around the globe" concept and apply it to tracks based on the kingdoms of Super Mario Odyssey, since that's already a game where you take a "tour" through different kingdoms around the world.

Job 4:
I’ve talked about this before, but I think Mario Kart Tour would have been perfect for Nintendo crossovers. The gacha would have been quite lucrative in that regard. We dabbled with the idea in Mario Kart 8, and we could experiment a little more here.

While new courses would mainly be based on general Nintendo series, we would also see a large variety of retro tracks and alternate costumes for familiar characters too.

After much deliberation, I've decided that the initial batch of courses will use Super Mario Odyssey as a basis, with the occasional Nintendo mobile game collaboration later down the line.

Job #5: Submit 16 nitro courses

The only rules here is that you can't do any tracks based on non-Mario-adjacent franchises just yet. For me:
Mushroom CupFlower CupStar CupSpecial Cup
Mario Circuit (based on the RC car courses from New Donk City)
Wooded Way (based on the Wooded Kingdom)
Lost Jungle (based on the Lost Kingdom)
Big Band Boulevard (based on the New Donk City Festival)
Top Hat Town (based on the Cap Kingdom)
Lakeside Lagoon (based on the Lake Kingdom)
Nimbus Air Show (based on the Cloud Kingdom)
Honeylune Scenic Route (a 3-section race based on the Moon Kingdom, Underground Caverns and Bowser's Wedding)
Fossil Falls (based on the Cascade Kingdom)
Snowline Circuit (based on the Snow Kingdom)
Ruined Road (based on the Ruined Kingdom)
Bowser's Castle (based on Bowser's Kingdom from Odyssey)
Jaxi Junction (based on the Sand Kingdom)
Sparkling Seaside (based on the Seaside Kingdom, along with Sparkling Waters from NSMBU)
Volbono Avanti (based on the Luncheon Kingdom)
Rainbow Road (based on Rainbow Ride from Super Mario 64)

I know I'm using Mario Odyssey as a basis, like how Super Mario Kart used Super Mario World as its basis, but you don't have to limit your submission to Odyssey-themed courses. Like I said, the only rule is that you can't do non-Mario-adjacent franchises for our content yet.

Job #6: Launch Tour

It's finally time to do our first Tour in this thread! But before we pick the tracks, I'd like to lay down a few ground rules on how Tours work in this thread.

See this table here?
Race 1Race 2Race 3Race 4
Retro course A
Retro course A
Retro course A
Retro course B
Retro course B
Tour nitro course
Retro course B
Retro course C
Retro course C
Retro course D
Retro course D
Here's how it works:
So, now that I've gotten all the preamble out of the way, let's finally get this show on the road. Pick any 10 courses for the Launch Tour using the criteria above. For me:

Looks like mine ended up being the only submission again, go figure. Anyway, I've got another job waiting with a potentially more exciting hook:

Job #7: Journey's Beginning Tour + 3 unique Common racers

This Tour's theme is...the first course in each Mario Kart game! Since Bonneton is the first place Mario visits in Odyssey, I figured it would be appropriate to primarily theme the Tour around each game's first track. But I'm gonna do something different with this job's prompt from here on out. Each Tour, you have to submit a certain number of racers with each Tour. In this case, we're going to submit 3 unique Common racers alongside this Tour. I've already added the tracks themed after this Tour, so this job is gonna focus on Common racers. For me:
  1. Goomba
  2. Hammer Bro
  3. Monty Mole
