I lost most of my interest in Smash Run.

This is not even the first time Nintendo creates a game (or a mode) only to not allow people to play it online. Ffs.

Actually, with Smash Run not supporting online, there goes most of my interest on the 3DS version as a whole :/ Meh...

Personally, I think they've been deliberately misleading. In the US Smash Direct that Smash Run was revealed in, they say "ultimately, it's way different from a simple online match." It's a bit open for interpretation, but still.
They purposefully left out the fact that it's not online until Famitsu assumed it was and they had to correct them.

I'm seriously disappointed in this development. Why would you lock out that many people from playing your 3DS-exclusive gamemode with other people?

This is a really weird choice to make. Smash Run is basically the only thing the 3DS version has going for it in comparison to the Wii U version outside of being handheld and having different stages, unless stuff like Target Blast and the new Classic mode is also 3DS exclusive which just sounds absurd.

If Wii U version has way more content it's pretty easy to see why they're releasing the 3DS version first now...

WHAT! NO! This makes no sense!!! And the game's already out, I'm assuming there's absolutely no way to patch/fix this by now is there??

Well this is a little bit of a bummer, as now I can't play Smash Run with my friends in Cali. Also I now gotta take a 45 minute drive to play it with my little brothers... Guess I can't avoid Mom forever... XD
Why did they decide to do it this way? Would that many enemies, characters, powerups, etc. just not hold up on their servers?

I clearly missed the faulty memo everyone else got. I thought this was local only from day 1. My interest has not changed. I played City Trial by myself for hours too.
I guess you and me are the only ones that are ok with this anyways. Sucks, but I'm not surprised. Would probably make the game the mode a lot laggy with all those things going on. Besides, there's always online play by normal means.

I suppose the saying I should go with is "I'm not entirely surprised but I am pretty disappointed."

When we've seen online mentioned before, Nintendo was pretty careful not to mention smash run, though one could say that US version of the direct with the mention of Smash Run "Not being a simple online match" would indicate it was meant to be online.

It's a shame that the 3DS version is going to lose a lot of interest. Some people will still buy it to unlock things, I know I'll still buy it because I still don't want a Wii U, but the one thing that was stated to be specifically unique about the 3DS version can't be used online even with friends. Ouch.

In my opinion? This is the choice that will kill the 3DS version in a year or so outside of Japan.

I don't think it will "kill" the 3DS version. People will keep travelling, and it is going to be good on the go. But at home... yeah.

Maybe they could patch it in or something. The game's replayability would triple, and hell, they implemented the pointless Homerun Contest and Multi-man Brawl in SSBB's online like it was no big deal.

....or maybe I 'm just reaching the bargaining phase of the stages of grief.

Well yes, I may have come off a bit harsh. I mostly meant the value of the game for a lot of people will go down tremendously when a major feature is only local and not online.

I mean, I think everyone has seen how much Smash run has been focused on overall. It seems weird to put that much focus on a mode that nobody will play after the first three or four months since there isn't online to keep it interesting.

Unless you have friends that all live really nearby and enjoy getting together for stuff like that. Then I say you are very lucky.

Guys! There may be some hope left after all! In this video, one from Nintendo of America says Smash Run IS online!
go to 17:29.

This is really starting to confuse me lol. I sure hope this is true. Maybe Exclusive for regions outside of Japan? Idk.

If Smash Run isn't online, I indeed have a lot less use for it. I will still pour many hours into it, as it is the best grinding mode in the game, and it's a very nifty grinding mode. But I was hoping it would be a lot more than that for me.

And the annoying part is that your rewards are BETTER if you play with human players. So that's really stupid if it isn't online.

However, even if it is not online on release, it could be patched in. In Tekken 6, there was a special single-player mode called "Scenario Campaign", basically the Subspace Emissary of that game. However, later on, Bandai Namco patched in an online 2 player co-op version of the mode, with 10 redesigned and very lengthy stages, and it was really good for getting fight money and customisation pieces in that game.

As it is, everyone has their own version of the map in Smash Run. So I really don't see syncing as an issue. All that needs to be synced are the alerts, map icons, and stats in the Smash Run map. This is exactly how local play works, so I don't see how it can't work online. The actual syncing of what fighters are doing only needs to be done in the final battle.

Well according to what I posted directly above you, it is possible that may be what happens. What if it was added through the update?

Well I've heard no reports about it from people with Japanese version. We'll just have to wait and see at this point.
